Does anyone know how long a past drivers license suspension stays on a person's driving record? About two and a half years ago, my drivers license was suspended for 30 days due to too many traffic tickets. I've never had a DUI, just got too many tickets in a certain amount of time. I've only had one ticket since then, a passenger seat belt ticket (I wasn't driving at the time). I know tickets disappear in 3 years, but what about a prior suspension? When I tried looking it up, all I found was info on reasons for suspension and getting reinstated. Will it ever come off or do I have to go to court and have it exponged to make it disappear? I live in Kansas.

Have you tried calling the DMV or checking their website?

Edited to add: http://www.ksrevenue.org/recrequest.htm has some links and info on how to request a copy of your driving record. That is probably the easiest way to find out if it's still showing up or not.

>>It would vary state by state. I am guessing this is a job related question. You might be able to get an answer with the RMV as they were the ones who likely automatically suspended your license. (At least that is how it works here.) Too, an auto insurance company agent that you could actually sit and talk to would be a wealth of information.
The question may depend on the job: how long your license has to be clean for, or a state policy.
You haven't given enough information on one side of the issue to answer the question.
In some situations it might not be a big deal, in others it might matter a lot.

it could be 3 years, or 7 years- and for some purposes never.

Your paperwork should tell you what happens and info about expunging, if not, call the Clerk's office where you went to court for the suspension.  They will know under what terms you can get it expunged or, if there was terms of the suspension that may have allowed the suspension to be automatically expunged from your record after your compliance.  I don't know what you mean by "looking it up" but you should be able to call the Secretary of State for and get a copy of your DL record.

Just an FYI, the stuff never really "disappears" unless it is expunged, it simply shows up based upon how far back someone looks.  Someone can actually go back and look something up regarding your suspension if they really want too.  Its just normal background checks only go back 3-5 years for basic checks.

Wow, my last ticket was Feb of 1982 in Brunswick Maine.
Maybe you need to slow down a bit?

Two of the tickets were for supposedly not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign by a school. Both times, kids were coming out and parents were lined up to get them, so I had cars lined up behind me waiting to go. I stopped. I just didn't stay stopped for 5-10 seconds or however long it takes to register on the cop's radar gun because I didn't want to block traffic. Both tickets were written by the same cop, were 2 weeks apart, and the situations were identical.

My prior suspended license stayed on my DMV report for 5 years, but they started the clock at the time of the original suspension, rather than when I cleared the fines and got it back to legal nearly two years later.

As for passengers, my car doesn't move until they either put the seat belt on, or get their feet back on the street. You are much less likely to get caught driving on a suspended license when you don't hand the cops a stupid reason to pull you over.

So just let me clarify something as I am confused..... you didn't stop at a stop sign for the legal amount of time and were given a ticket.  Two weeks later you did exactly the same thing?

Just so you know wanders, there are places in the USA where you get a ticket and you never know about it.  They send it in the mail and it can get lost or never get to you.  then all of a sudden you find out when you go to renew a driver's license or something.  That happened to me years ago.  I'd gotten a ticket and never actually saw the ticket.  Years later, I was trying to change the registration to a different state and this popped up on the computers.  And I was like?  Huh?  I haven't even *been* to that state in years.  How is it possible I have a ticket there?

Because DBG wrote that the tickets were written by the same cop I had thought that he had actually pulled her over

He did. You can have a certain amount of points on your license, when you exceed that, the license is suspended. She's lucky all she got was failure to come to a complete stop, he could have written it as reckless endangerment since it was in a school zone. You need to stop for four seconds at a stop sign. There is no excuse for driving anything less than very carefully in a school zone. I'm sure the cars behind her would have preferred she stop for four seconds than hit a child, who could well have been one of theirs.

Yes because I was confused about why I got the first ticket. There is no legal amount of time to stop. I was ticketed for not coming to a complete stop when I did come to a complete stop. After getting both tickets, I mentioned it to my ex and learned something new. Apparently, their radar guns are slow and a complete stop doesn't register unless you stay stopped for so long. The only thing I was guilty of on those two tickets was failure to impede traffic (btw impeding traffic is a ticketable offense lol). Six years ago, I got a ticket for turning left on a red light. I was already in the middle of the intersection when the light turned red. The light was green at the time I pulled out in the middle of the intersection which is perfectly legal to do. By the time the oncoming traffic stopped, the light had turned red. Just because a person gets a ticket doesn't mean they're guilty of the offense. I admit the speeding tickets I got were my fault (I do admit and take responsibility when I am at fault for something), but the other tickets weren't. Without the tickets I wasn't guilty of, there wouldn't have been enough tickets to suspend my license. I would've fought the tickets I was innocent of in court if I hadn't been alone. There's no point in fighting it when it's one person's word against a cop.

And you didn't learn after the first time?

I can understanstand one instance, of not comprehending the law, but after getting a ticket and having it explained to you, in less than 2 weeks, you decide it was more important for you to not hang up traffic, than obey the law?

What I am reading is that it wasn't really your fault.
You weren't responsible.

The reason why you didn't learn the first time, is because you didn't accept responsibility for it.
Whether that is because you won't or can't, I don't know, but I'm beginning to believe it is because you just aren't capable.

I've gotten tickets that were my fault and tickets that weren't my fault. I have no problem admitting when something is my fault. Nobody is perfect including you, but you seem to love going around insulting people all the time. If it was just me, I'd think maybe you had the wrong impression but I've seen you do the same thing to plenty of others as well. You must really get off on it.

>>You got a ticket, and you didn't understand why you got the ticket. It was your responsibility to look up the law, or go to the police station and find out why you got the ticket.

The cop wasn't being arbitrary.

A full, complete stop has a specific meaning.

In not doing so (finding out why you got the first ticket), you did not accept responsibility.

To this day, you still think you didn't deserve the ticket.

I'm not getting off on this.
I, personally would get off on you having some kind of eureka moment and see you give up being a professional victim.
