I was recently told, on more than one occasion, by a girl who interests me in the extreme, that I could collar her if I were willing to pay a substantial "dowry". I think she is kidding, but I am sometimes very easily fooled...a bit too credulous for my own good. Believe it or not, it's something I actually like about myself. Anyway, if she is not kidding, then I find myself wondering about some things: 1)WTF?  2) has anyone else ever been confronted by such a demand?

At this point, I have absolutely no intention at all of paying. Still, I'd be interested in hearing others' thoughts on this topic.

Bob

Pay the dowry to whom? Traditionally, it NEVER goes to the bride. lol

Uhhh, that person has misunderstood the concept of a dowry.  A dowry is what SHE pays YOU.  If you have to pay, it's called a BRIDE-PRICE.

(Either that or it's a Nigerian scammer who wants to part Rat from his money.)

Dowry is property or money brought by the BRIDE to her husband. Collars have nothing to do with it.

edited to add:: So how much are you going to charge her, Doc?

No matter how it goes, the bottom line is that nothing is for free. My response to this demand would be "Those collarared to me must pay a tithe/tribute" Tell that to her and the tribute the same amount as her demand of a dowry.

Hmmm...an interesting question to me...

As ya'll know, I was seeing two great doms, and, finally, had to make a committment to one.  He also told me I am free to communicate in any way I wish with the other dom with no interference or questions from Him.

The other dom, (whom I met and began seeing first) jokingly (I think) demanded a dowry of a few certain things...some that my Dom is able to do easily because of His profession...and one...that we will not be able to fulfill. (as far as I know)

My sweet dom is planning on fulfilling the other dom's request, not because He feels obligated, but, because, He knows what a nice person the other dom is, and how good He was to me. (and that He is a friend.)

I do think you are going to have to consider what it is that you want from this person.  If it is only her time, attention, and 'affections' it may be a good deal for you.  If you are looking for something a bit deeper, my suggestion is to move on.

Good luck, whatever you decide!

Hmmm ... I always find it funny how upset people get at the mention of parting with their money.

I mean, ok the whole dowry thing is a little strange. And yes, traditionally the dowry is what the bride offers her husband ... (The idea though is that hubby isn't exactly a schmuck either.)

But why make a big deal out of it?

You have no intention of paying her so ... Don't pay her?

On second thought ... Maybe she's trying to say that if you really want to collar her (and own her, as a piece of property) you'd have to *buy* her ... Like a piece of property. Maybe she's just using the wrong terminology?

Yeah....according to dictionary.com
dow·ry
n. Money or property brought by a bride to her husband at marriage. Also called dower.

bride price n : money or property given (in some societies) by the bridegroom to the family of his bride

I think she mixed up her terms, unless she really wants to give you a lot of money/land/goods.

dang, Bob, does this mean the goat and pair of shoes to wear are off? i heard the cost of goats has come down recently. i hear she's got the check for $13,000 and six chickens ready for your family. sounds good to me.

if i hear you're registering for flatware and china, i'm gonna barf. i'm going to bring an electric can opener; i've heard you need several of those.

Well, after more thorough discussion, the shoes, a ring, and maybe some kind of symbolic equivalent of a goat are in order. We won't be registering for housewares and I'm too much of a greenietreehugger to accept an electric can opener...unless it's solar powered.

Even thought its illegal, in India many families still go by the old practice of giving the groom's family a dowry. If memory serves me correctly, to get your daughter married to a doctor was one of the most expensive dowries to be paid, no wonder the man I was talking to had high blood pressure, he had 4 daughters!! Even on the lower end of the scale they still do it, beggars will give up their *begging position* to the family who will take their daughter off their hands in marriage.

If she is comming to you from another, you pay him for her (purchasing a slave is good busiess). If he wants rid of her fast you may be able to get her cheap.... Hell he may even pay you to take her off his hands.... Purchase price should be set at between one to five goats. If  however he is paying you it should be set between one to five camels.... Pre-collering (prenups) should be completed before the comllaring and should have added that if she takes off with you goats or camels her father or most senior male family member will reimburse you financially and replace missing camels or goats....

LOL who/what is the dowry going to?  Is she confusing it with going to her family to help make up for their loss of income/support that you will take and prove to them that you will be a good provider for her?  Is it going into a trust fund?

The dowry is what they give to you.

I agree with what others say Bob, she should be paying you (actually her family should be paying you in cash or livestock or property).  But I'm not sure what this has to do with a "collar", I think a dowry payment traditioanlly goes with marriage.
