Master had a mentor for many years. He always speaks very highly of this man, and considers his time learning from him to be very valuable. Myself, I am particularly fond of the excellent cropping techniques Master learned from his mentor!

That sounds like a really positive mentoring experience!

I'm not trying to denigrate mentoring, but I do think there's a combination - At times we need to explore things and make our own mistakes, and at others we need the wisdom (which I freely admit that I lacked when I was 19 - and that the OP appears to have - kudos to him) to listen and learn from others.

I definitely think that mentoring is important for "technique" - a good lesson on cropping, caning, etc can save a lot of heart ache - and can make something that may be potentially dangerous a lot safer too. Ideally mentoring ought (as it seems to have been in your case) about more than just technique of course.

So I think there's a blend. Sometimes you have to watch the glass and water demonstration, sometimes you have to try to cup the water in your hands...

It was definitely a positive experience for my Master. I only regret that I cannot meet his mentor, as the man has since passed away. From what Master has told me, his mentor was very good at allowing him to make his own mistakes, but also being there to help explain why they were mistakes and to suggest a better way. The only exception to this was physical technique. His mentor was very specific on technique for cropping and other more corporeal ways of having fun, so that no one ever got hurt in a bad way. They were very close friends as well as BDSM enthusiasts.
