That sounds like a really positive mentoring experience! I'm not trying to denigrate mentoring, but I do think there's a combination - At times we need to explore things and make our own mistakes, and at others we need the wisdom (which I freely admit that I lacked when I was 19 - and that the OP appears to have - kudos to him) to listen and learn from others. I definitely think that mentoring is important for "technique" - a good lesson on cropping, caning, etc can save a lot of heart ache - and can make something that may be potentially dangerous a lot safer too. Ideally mentoring ought (as it seems to have been in your case) about more than just technique of course. So I think there's a blend. Sometimes you have to watch the glass and water demonstration, sometimes you have to try to cup the water in your hands...
