I personally think it should because how can we have a government system that is separate from church and state if we allow religion to affect our laws?

I see this as analogous to gay marriage because polyamory, like gay relationships, is perfectly legal.  It's just when marriage gets brought into the equation...

Perhaps, if there are conditions about it.  Insurance coverage for a working spouse and others in the relationship would be weird.  And i have heard that in some towns in Utah, the women just pop kids out and go on welfare - sorta like a government supported commune.

In theory, I'm not opposed, but the devil is in the details.

Yep the devil is always in the details that is why one must read the fine print.

When I look at pictures of the Swedish Bikini Team I'd say YES!

ONE psychobitch in the house every 4 weeks is plenty.

Let's not push our luck.

I was just writing a post on this subject (somewhat) on the poly board.

The deal about the separation of church and state doesn't really apply here, in My opinion.  The fact of the matter is, we invited the state to get involved in the marriage biz in the first place.  We not only ask the state to recognize the unions, we ask the state to be the authority when we can't figure out how to amicably dissolve those unions.  I have to admit that I don't think polyamorous people are going to be any better or worse than our monogamous counterparts have done when it comes to things like divorce court.  We will, however, automatically be more complicated just because of the fact that there will be more parties involved.

If people who are poly really do want the privilege of marriage or civil unions, we have to look at not only how we're going to handle the situation when we succeed, but also what's going to happen when we fail.  Some of us will be sitting in those same government buildings, in front of the same judges, asking the state to come up with how property gets divided, custody and visitation are handled, and every darn thing that monogamous couples have to get resolved for them.  It's not just a question of let multiple partners be legal.  It's everything that goes with it.

Can you just imagine how messy the divorce would become with multiple people involved.

The government is overly involved in marriage as it is.

I'm inclined to say yes, but there may be special concerns and stuff I am un aware of that'd make it impractical for polygamy marriages to be legal.

Because there is no such thing as separation of church and state. There is no freedom FROM religion, only freedom OF religion.

I recognize that for mentally handicapped people like myself it is best to form a Gestalt with people handicapped in other ways, as in the Lame and the Blind helping each other.

But no: polygamy, which is characteristic for populations that mutilate the penis of their males, causes social instability, resulting in rape, and in genetically vicious mean people without a conscience. The Christian monogamous way of reproducing by means of - God sent - romantic love with infrequent adulterous escapades by the married woman in order to acquire progeny from a superior male, is far better, resulting in more beautiful, balanced people with a conscience. (Though in any population there always will be and must be people without a conscience; psychopaths are useful people too.)

He is spouting his belief of the evils of circumcision, which is the basis for 90% of his posts.

If we didnt circumcise, the world would be perfect.

Yes the end of circumcision would make a perfect world.

What does that have to do with polygamy?

While cicumcision may have a role in some belief systems and may even have a profound effect upon how some view polygamy, let's not make this a discussion on circumcision.

Thank you

Oh ok lol. I wonder how in his mind that would affect polygamy and legality issues.

A lot of cults do the same thing. Get the women to have kids over and over and then all the sudden the government is supporting the cult. That's why most cults have huge birth rates.

Let's look at countries in which polygamy is both legal and practiced vs. countries in which it is not. No, I will not post a link; if you want to do research, I am not your librarian. However, think about it: Countries in which polygamy is not legal: Basically Westernized, with medical care (exception: the U.S.), social service programs and support, respect for women as something other than property, etc. Countries in which polygamy is legal and practiced: Honor killings, child brides, girls/women used as commerce, lack of basic goods and services, etc.

So, while I do agree that you should be able to marry the one or ones whom you choose in theory, we all know the practice of said theory when it comes to polygamy is usually only a ploy to keep women uneducated and under the control of men. Should polygamy be legal? No. Should the government promote marriage by offering benefits to those who register as properly vetted candidates for the institution as they define it? No to that one, too.
