OP.. your book sounds far fetched.. and not really about BDSM but people playing games in a fantasy world.. the only thing missing seems to be an ancient biblical mystery.. is there one you failed to mention?

Honestly, its very hard for me to suspend my disbelief when reading fiction so I'm picky about what I read. I'd suggest you write what you wish.. its fiction.. so it doesn't really matter how accurate it is to what this group of people think bdsm is... no?

and RS -- great job.. and very well put I think

Lockit -> RE: Research (11/11/2010 10:07:59 AM)

I really don't mean to be rude here, but I am going to be, I'm sure.

A good writer, writes what they know or can cover their ass on. All we need is another writer that doesn't know anything much about bdsm or d/s dynamic's putting out more information on dysfunctional people and giving others the impression that is what we who are involved are all about. That is pure fantasy gone wild to make a buck...

Why not do the research before you put together a storyline? Sure, start with an idea, research and then write. But if you honestly want to do us a favor... don't do it without a disclaimer for the wrong things in fantasy you might say about us and the impression you may leave in some people's minds. Some of us are trying to show the world we aren't that different from them and you are making us out to be criminal minds with all sorts of dishonor. Thanks buddy...

poise -> RE: Research (11/11/2010 10:17:57 AM)

How is the wife..who for all intents and purposes seems to be a strongly indepedent
if not downright conniving woman, going to be sold without her knowledge?
The plot will work on it's own without having to bring in a bdsm aspect.
Instead of Master, refer to him as the Capo dei capi. [:)]

SoulcatcherXXX -> RE: Research (11/11/2010 10:21:39 AM)

Ah well...I was up all night and was doing the best I could. I agree with this: "I consider all Masters to be Doms and some Doms to be Masters." Just not doing very well at making myself clear today, so feel free to disagree with me all you like...it won't be the first time that's ever happened, and maybe it will spark up some more conversation. :-)

dewillac -> RE: Research (11/11/2010 10:22:37 AM)

Hubby is a doctor with access to drugs. He drugs her with succhinylcholine (SUX) which paralyzes the body, but keeps the "patient" awake, aware of what's going on, but unable to feel. I plan to have hubby give her the drug before he sells her and she'll appear totally unresisting.

SoulcatcherXXX -> RE: Research (11/11/2010 10:30:41 AM)

I think all books should end with either Forrest Gump getting the girl or a stake through the heart. Are you sure she can't be unresisting because he's a vampire and sucked out all her blood?

dewillac -> RE: Research (11/11/2010 10:32:04 AM)

Seems the eastern European part is getting to you. Blood thirsty!

Lockit -> RE: Research (11/11/2010 10:32:25 AM)

Tell the truth, this is your fantasy and maybe your life right? Your profile says you are looking for a dominant man. For study and research or what?

Look, I am aware that all stories don't have to be based on truth... I could even enjoy some that could no way be truth, but really, your story is very off base and don't expect some of us to be happy you are out there playing with perceptions of a very misunderstood lifestyle.

dewillac -> RE: Research (11/11/2010 10:36:16 AM)

The profile is wrong. I'm not looking for a dominant man or woman, but I had to check something in that category so that's what I did. I appreciate your comments and know you're unhappy with my plot line. And that's okay. It's why I'm chatting here, to get feedback and find out if I'm going in the right direction. For you, I'm not and I understand that. Based on the comments, and they're all helpful, I'll probably change the BDSM aspect to something else. But I had to know if it was right or wrong for the book. So thank you for your honesty. No joke, no sarcasm - I do appreciate you letting me know what you think.

SoulcatcherXXX -> RE: Research (11/11/2010 10:43:43 AM)

I was just trying to help you get a movie deal. Because there's always room for a good vampire flick, but drugging up a woman to the point she is incapable of resisting is just kind of a normal, boring thing that us guys do all the time. Right guys?
Guys?
Ummm....oh god I hope it's not just me...
:-P

DesFIP -> RE: Research (11/11/2010 10:45:37 AM)

OP, have you consulted a lawyer yet? Because your premise doesn't hold. If he steals her money by selling her illegally and having her kept kidnapped against her will, then the court will overturn the agreement and return her money followed by putting him and the man who buys her in jail. He can throw a bag over her head and toss her into the back of the car and hand her over to the other guy. However once she can speak and says she was kidnapped and wants to be released the master would have to contact the police and attest that her husband claimed this was being done at her request and he was horrified to discover he had been lied to.

So it doesn't matter whether you call him a dom, a master or grandpoohbah. If he's got any brains at all, the first thing he would do is make sure she's up with this. Otherwise he knows he'll be the one being raped nightly by Bubba in prison.

This stuff happened on craigslist a couple of years ago. Some guy got upset when his girlfriend broke up with him and retaliated by posting an ad for someone to enact a 'mock' rape. He gave the name and address and her keys in the expectation that she would be harmed. I seem to recall the 'rapist' being smart enough to contact her first and ask if she was still consenting to this. They contacted the police and the bf went to jail.

On the other hand, some people fantasize about and role-play all sorts of weird things like what you wrote.

Inthewoods -> RE: Research (11/11/2010 11:19:58 AM)

It doesn't sound like my kind of book at all.  But putting that aside, I do find the equating of BDSM with people trafficking a very uncomfortable one.  For many of us, the beauty of what we do is the deep connection with feel with the other - it is not just a random body to buy.

Now, if I were to take that plot, I would have it that the she and the "Master" character had secretly wanted each other for years and that the husband pays the Master to take her off his hands (so he could inherit or whatever, ignoring the legal glitch there).  The woman and the Master get to be together AND they have the husband's cash.  Then when the husband tries to claim her money, he loses out there too, cos it isn't legal...

DesFIP -> RE: Research (11/11/2010 12:55:42 PM)

So she has an affair instead of divorcing the slug way before the wedding anniversary? Seems unnecessary to me.

Madame4a -> RE: Research (11/11/2010 1:00:57 PM)

You're a writer... why not do some real live academic research... not asking for answers and comments on a faceless bulletin board where you have no idea who you're talking to?

you know.. a library.. interview people.. read books by authors in the field?

that old fashioned tried and true kind of stuff?

Nah, too traditional. Here's how:

She’s a writer (wow, what a surprise)! She writes romances under one name and mysteries under another. One of her mystery novels involved the mob. She did her research and actually got very close to a mob boss and his “boys”. When she wrote her book, she had them proof it for her and made corrections based on their edits. Now they handle her money for her and they’re always available when she needs them.   When her hubby’s plan is found out, naturally in time for her to attend the all-important meeting, she contacts her mob friends. She explains what happened when she was “sold” and how the Master helped her figure out what was going on.   She arranges to attend the meeting, held at the mob’s location, and surprises hubby. She demands a divorce, which he grants. But then she offers him a choice. He can either spend three weeks (the same amount of time she was with the Master) with the mob boys doing anything they want to him, with two restrictions - he cannot be killed outright by them nor can he die from anything they do him. OR, he can let her sell him to her friend, Callie, who will let him go after three weeks if he manages to satisfy her needs. Of course, he won’t know she’s a Mistress, who has the right to sell him to someone else prior to the three week time period.   Bottom line is that he can either choose to be beaten up 24/7 for three weeks or he can have sex with Callie with three weeks. Be careful what you wish for!!!!!!     This is why I wanted to know if a sub (slave?) can be sold. For a get-back, what do you think? Will this work?

FWIW, I think it's a great plot and I would definitely read that book. In fact, I was a little disappointed to see you'd posted the ending as I wanted to be surprised if I ever ran across it. I'm a voracious reader, if it counts for anything. And a writer. And I believe I know how stories "work." Yours works. At least for me. :) I think a mainstream readership will find it titillating if you don't get too explicit with the bdsm torture scenes, although you could go a little heavier with the hubby as he is the bad guy and people will see it as his just rewards.

dewillac -> RE: Research (11/11/2010 2:58:22 PM)

Thank you so much for your comments and I do hope you will read the book when it's published. But I didn't post the ending yet, so aren't you glad? The part I posted is only a portion of the prolog; the entire remainder of the book is still to follow. Hubby definitely gets what's coming to him and, although part of it will be spelled out in the prolog, he'll appear again in the book. After all, I'll  need a pivotal scene for his ex-wife and her new friend. But I'm not giving anymore away. You'll have to read the book. My first book is due to come out in February. I write under the name of Marie Everett, so I hope to gain you as a fan and have you keep an eye for this new one. Thanks again very much for writing and for your comments.

ejmichaels -> RE: Research (11/11/2010 4:21:42 PM)

I don't want to tackle definitions here - just a related comment. When I started in the scene back in 1985, "Master" was often used as a title to refer to the Dominant, even if it was not a Master/slave arrangement. Now, there is a greater distinction between D/s and M/s, resulting in part, I think, with "Sir" being used to refer to a Dominant, avoiding the confusion with "Master".  I like the all-purpose "Sir" as a respectful form of address, but I'm having trouble getting used to it as a noun. That's a different topic.

dewillac - I sent you a PM about the definitions.
