As I understand it, agnostic usually describes a person neither believes nor disbelieves in deities. Agnostics therefore, do not discount the possibility of the existence of a deity (or deities) entirely. Rather, agnostics would say that the cases for believing in, and for disbelieving in a deity (or deities) are both currently unproven. They may arrive at this position for any number of reasons. Nor do agnostics necessarily share any other beliefs.

If this outline is valid, it would be correct to say that an agnostic does not believe in the existence of a deity, (the 'softer/passive' definition of atheism proposed above). Agnostics would be unable to agree with the 'active/harder' definition ie the belief that a deity/ties do not exist.

I'd go with that. I am an Atheist as a matter of faith. I'm no different from the God-botherers, really. Agnosticism always strikes me as a bit wussy. We all need something not to believe in.

Up to you of course. It could be observed that the atheist/theist relationship is like that of a fish to water ie unable to breathe anywhere else.

Agnostic has come to mean 'I (personally) don't know if there is a god but just in case I'm not going piss him off by saying there isn't"...hell, you might as well take Pascal's wager and not worry about your little soul burning in the hell which was essentially created in Medieval Europe to fill pews and to make people feel okay about the fact that they survived the Plague. Agnostic means that certain things, especially concerning a diety is unknowable. Closer related to gnosticism which holds that there are secrets that only a few will ever unveil than Charlie Brown being wishy-washy about whether to kick the football or not.

Atheists, well the ones that are self-proclaimed and hold to that title that I have known are more reactionary to the Christian concepts force fed them and which don't make sense because they are told not to question and that just seemed absurd to them. They definitely can be just as blindly fanatical to holding to a Newtonian clockwork concept of reality as others can be regarding the literal "truth" of the bible.

It is fun playing devil's advocate and baiting them into arguments that the big bang is no different than the biblical concept of god speaking and there being creation, "Let there be light"...but I rarely bother baiting any more but it is interesting that both are just accounts of creation through vibrations.

Not to anyone with more than 10 functioning brain cells, it hasn't.

Granted but I think my point is Agnostic means more than just a shrugging of the shoulders and "I don't know"...then again that is the fun thing about semantics, with everyone's perception bringing their own baggage to the conversation, it is difficult to know if one word means the same or even similar thing to different people.

Then again, in life I have met quite a few people who wouldn't measure up to your 10 active bain cell criteria. Something about Kool-Aid or red pills and blue pills?

I wasn't having a pop, I was being funny.

At least I thought I was. Self delusion is a terrible affliction

I tried to be funny before and it didn't work out, so I'm leaving that comment well alone *

* I was so tempted by a French response**, but I'd best leave well alone.
**Bain. Get it? <silence> Jesus*** ... tough room ...

Self delusion at least has a good audience, I should know...too much time rattling around myh own mental corridors.
Sorry, in my own sarcastic ramblings sometimes I don't recognize the humor in other's words as well...touche?

No worries

Being fair, it wasn't that funny.

It was humorous enough. Some of us don't need a knee-slapper at every turn.

In the meantime, I think it's clear from these discussions that we need more tags or labels for those (including believers, non-believers, and other-believers) who have no concern for what others are greatly concerned about. Let's follow the phobia regime and have a large and ever increasing list of what people don't believe in or what they never bother to think about more than once. The greatly concerned and the obsessive and those who enjoy telling others what they really think obviously feel limited with the current selection.

The fact that you let the Brits off so easy for totally butchering a language beyond all recognizability speaks well to your wonderful spirit, though I hope that you take it out on them in sessions.

whispers in your ear: recognition ... the word is recognition not that awful mangled contrivance you invented.

But I really enjoyed your quip about cheating :)

My creativity is usually reserved for better purpose and, alas, I did not actually invent that myself. That level of mangle-ised contrivanation unfortunately exists in some dictionaries that have lower invitation standards, but 'recognition' is indeed the word I would have normally used.

There are those who are naturally funny, but some of us require a good spell of sleep deprivation to provide much humor.

Thank you for your forgivingful understandingness.

I'm not reading that as I wish, I'm reading what he actually said.

You do alot of assuming, dont you. Pity.

Speaking as an atheist myself, I believe we're all bloody fantastic.

Drink with one of us, and (considering if we're an easy tipper) you'll surely understand why God needs to get laid.

There's a weird quirk to collarchat where changing users gets ignored if one logged in through collarme or some such thing. But by all means try to distract from your hypocrisy of making assumptions in order to ridicule another poster for making assumptions.

lmao

your a trip GS. I could care less what name you post under. You are an asshole regardless of the nic. You are prejudicial towards anyone who doesnt agree with your way of nonreligious beliefs... and you rarely post on any thread that doesnt have to do with religion.

As far as my assumptions, i posted what i posted based upon what i read. Dont like what i posted? By all means do block me. I believe your life would be so much more stress free since i seem to be the poster you like to goad and attack the most.

But, by all means, have a blessed day and walk sweetly with God, GS.

I seem to remember Pascal's Wager being discussed here....who was it with again??? :)

Anyway it's a good place to start when discussing Atheism or the irreligious.

It was meant as a public address. Residual habit from the days where you had to reply to ANY poster in order to post to a thread, and quote him if you wanted to address him in particular. (Edit) Which is still the case on sites using older forum software.
