I'd go with that. I am an Atheist as a matter of faith. I'm no different from the God-botherers, really. Agnosticism always strikes me as a bit wussy. We all need something not to believe in.

Hertz, isn't there a definition for the word god  (and not even a particularly loose one) under which the statement you believe you are god would be accurate?

It's a popular notion in the more narcissistic occult systems.

Can we believe the goodness/badness of people?  The random of the world?  The wonders  of the universe?  Why is it necessary to believe in a God?  And why is someone who is undecided (Agnostic) a wuss?

Not disagreeing with what you wrote, but as a point of order, "agnostic" is not necessarily the same as "undecided".

I'm an agnostic. I've concluded, on balance, and after careful consideration of the evidence, that there is no god. If new information springs to light at any point I'll happily revisit that conclusion.

What do you think of Aetheists?

How I felt about an atheist would depend on the atheist, not on the label itself.

That's my business, and a personal matter.

Translation: if I were actually to explain, I'd then suffer an entire evening of god-botherers tearing the minutiae of my argument apart, doing the "number of angels dancing on pin heads" thing, while not actually grasping the central tenet, and frankly I don't need the attention, nor do I need the hassle.

Much like my feelings about the military. The central plank of which is an intangible feeling I don't try to convey to those who haven't seen what I have, nor feel what I did about Him.

quote:

I did have a smashing lunch with an old friend yesterday though. She's as god-luvvy as they come, and yet we were able to enjoy each other's friendship without any recourse to anything in the harvest festival department.

I can't say likewise about any atheists I've met as theirs seems a reactionary stance, that is to say that although it is one that, as something of a rather anti-establishmentarianist myself, I understand, is usually quite filled with emotion, usually bitterness at the concept of a religion in general, or A religion in particular, being forced down their throats as kids. Though it would indeed be nice to discuss it with a degree of dispassion.

quote:

I look at some of the comments by "followers of a merciful god" I see here and don't feel the same processes are going on. It's like sheep talking about grass sometimes.

Well, let's just say not all of His flock have white wool, or wool at all.

Nothing whatsoever like it, actually, but no worries.

Oh intangible feelings are great aren't they? I love them. So ... intangible!

That's probably for the best, to be honest.

Hmmm...you're not your usual self...something up RF mate???? I have to say, there does come a time when one must simply accept that he has done everything within reach to make his fellow man see sense, failed, and walk. In my case, an atheist died AFTER I tried to talk sense into him, and for a while I felt guilty. I still get the very, very occasional wince when I think of where he is now.

That one must simply accept being unable to bring the rest of mankind around to logic, and shrug, however heartbreaking the topic.

If you're in this lifestyle and believe in god and the bible - and that it condones what you are doing you can probably convince yourself of anything.

common sense? A belief in science and rational reasoning? The fact that there are so many gods and so many different believers all believing their way is the only way? I don't mean to answer for RapierFugue, but hey, it is a message board.

We're not at the "mate" stage, remember?

But yes, I'm not at my most patient this evening, old sport. Apologies if I'm coming over as unusually acerbic. Nothing to do with you I assure you. Nor anyone else here. Just in a great deal of pain, for various reasons.

Maybe god hates me

Do you actually believe that? That people burn in some imaginary "hell" simply because they choose not to believe?

It surprises me you think that way, really it does.

I'll ask you this just the once; what "sense" did you try to impart? Why do you believe? I'm perfectly sanguine with you not wishing to answer, so don't feel obliged to. Or if you'd rather reply personally, in CMail, do that instead.

That's the point; it's not logic where this subject's concerned. It's faith, and unthinking acceptance. I've no problem with you following your star, as it were, but I do resent it when it people try to maintain it's the only option.

Plus there's the point that if someone is made happy someone else doing them acts of "unkindness", then are those acts actually unkind?

Atheists are exactly the same as anyone else, except that none of them suffer from one particular type of psychiatric disorder.

Absolutely, public forum and all that

And yes, as I've said before I’m an empirical data sort of chap.

There is currently no, repeat no, objective evidence for the existence of any higher being. None whatsoever.

Now of course as soon as some pops up I'll be only too delighted to review it and reach my own conclusions. Hence agnostic, not atheist*.

*is the title of this thread misspelled? I only just noticed that.
