I felt it deserved a topic of its own.

Don't forget ya gotta have a plate of piroghi with borscht.

shivermetimbers -> RE: Borscht! (11/13/2010 5:51:11 PM)

Just stick with the pierogi

VideoAdminAlpha -> RE: Borscht! (11/13/2010 7:56:18 PM)

I have had perogi(sp?) but all I know about borscht(maybe) is something with beets?

KatyLied -> RE: Borscht! (11/13/2010 8:27:08 PM)

Pierogi deserves its own thread......yum

SorceressJ -> RE: Borscht! (11/13/2010 8:33:58 PM)

*agrees about the pierogi*
VMA is right about the borscht; it is a soup made from beets and may be served hot or cold:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borscht

windchymes -> RE: Borscht! (11/13/2010 9:32:25 PM)

I had borscht on a cruise ship once. It WAS yummy...tastes much better than it sounds!

girlygurl -> RE: Borscht! (11/13/2010 10:00:18 PM)

I always thought the name borscht was funny. I love pickled beets but not sure if I'd like beet soup.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Borscht! (11/13/2010 10:13:27 PM)

MmmmmmmmBORSCHT!! Hot or cold, love it! Beets are one of my fave vegetables.

Pierogi! With sour cream!

VaguelyCurious -> RE: Borscht! (11/14/2010 12:34:39 AM)

Now I feel left out because I've never had pierogi either-gonna have to hit the Polish convenience store...

Aylee -> RE: Borscht! (11/14/2010 7:09:18 AM)

I ordered soup and salad at a Russian restaurant when I was about 16.  I have not been able to eat or look at a beet since.  Borscht and beet salad.  Not my most favorite dining experience.

sunshinemiss -> RE: Borscht! (11/14/2010 7:46:04 AM)

I love beets.  I love borscht.  I like it so much, it is often a topic of conversation.

Here is one of my favorite phrases:

I don't know you from borscht.

I do change it up when I talk to non-Jews and say "I don't know you from a can of paint."  This is not because borscht in any way resembles a can of paint but because so few of the non-Jews that I know have an inkling of what borscht is and let's face it ... it doesn't sound appetizing upon description.  And then there's the whole explaining of borscht taking away the meaning of the phrase and it just adds to all kind of confusion and mayhem.  I like using words like mayhem.  They are fun.

And borscht is pretty.

good night.

Louve00 -> RE: Borscht! (11/14/2010 8:11:50 AM)

I've had it.  It does nothing for me in the way of "wow" though.  The peirogi's are better.  Galumpki's (stuffed cabbage) are even better than that.  Talking Jewish...I'd rather eat kasha.

LanceHughes -> RE: Borscht! (11/14/2010 8:21:59 AM)

OMG - I was taken here:

http://www.cracoviarestaurant.com/dinner-menu.html

as a "guide."  Being the good, North-side Chicago Polish boy that I am, my host wanted me to explain some of the dishes.  OMGawd!  My mouth is watering at the memory.

LanceHughes -> RE: Borscht! (11/14/2010 8:28:40 AM)

This a damned authentic.  Very easy.  Note the cabbage, sausage and tomatoes.  Maybe the translation of borscht should be "Russian Sausage and Vegetable Soup."

LORDY!  Crank up the soup pot.......

Louve00 -> RE: Borscht! (11/14/2010 8:30:18 AM)

Wow!  Good link, Lance.  I have a polish friend who lives in CO.  Gonna have to entice her to visit the place with this link! [;)]

<-- is on her way to Lance's house for SOOP! [:D]

Me too. I've had borscht and it does nothing for me.  But its name DOES sound cool.

yep, in the ocean and alive [:)]

However, I am willing to make an exception and get one (or two or three, as I have no idea how big they are) for my cats to try....and will let you know if they liked it or not [:)]
