I have always had a great deal of respect for the Queen, and have a great deal of sympathy for her. Truly, has she had a moment to call her own since she turned 16? The rest of them...objects of pity, really, as far as I'm concerned. Sure, they're rich as Croesus, and at what price? They can't sneeze without someone making note of it. Half the country thinks they're leeches, the rest hold them to a mysterious standard no one could meet. I hope the marriage works out. I hope she gets on with Camilla, too.

It's generally the institution of the monarchy, Lady Hib, not the royals as people, that matter. They can start out OK, and even remain that way. The Queen Mother didn't; Edward VIII certainly didn't. The present queen has always seemed OK as a person. Chas realises that part of his role, as future king, is to look to the long-term future of the country. Governments only last for five years - there's no governmental institution that has any vested interested in the long term future. So, Chas does - and he focuses on long term issues like that of the environment. He tries, at least. People criticise our royals for doing utterly absurd things - but usually it's not the fault of the royals, personally. Chas had to get married. His bride had to be a lot younger, and preferably a virgin. So what we got was Diana, a very young woman with no experience of anything, shoved into a role in which she was more exposed to the public gaze than anyone else in the world. Diplomats here are chosen from the brightest, best educated, and most astute - and then they're carefully trained. Diana was none of those things and had no training, yet she had to take on one of the hardest diplomatic roles in the world. It was asinine. But it couldn't be otherwise, because the institution of royalty itself is asinine. My one, overriding dislike of the institution of our monarchy? As a Briton, I am a 'subject'. That means I am a person who is subject to the will of the monarch. What a ridiculous, outdated, crock of fart-gas. Well, lots of countries have their silly obsessions: the UK with its monarchy; the USA with its guns. But there are worse things than both, I suppose.

As for being a waste of time, what’s the alternative? More politicians’? Politicians’ cost us a lot more, for much less in return. quote: Oh I don't know. Churchill helped massively to save this country from an invasion, while Edward and Wallace Simpson was selling us out to the Nazis. See the other thread and my other post. Really, though, it's meaningless to say the royal family give us so much and politicians so little. All you're saying here is that you like royalty but not politicians. What it really means Peon, is I appreciate the royalty because I understand politics.

I think if the topic came down to losing the queen (uk) and losing guns(us) you might find a HUGE difference in rhetoric and violence I do understand the difference between the two, but still more people would be up in arms about taking away gun rights than losing the monarchy even without the difference in population

I was working very close to where the queen mothers funeral procession was. For days before, on the day and for days after the entire area was full of mourners. There were long ques of people lining up outside coffee shops and bars and getting through that throng of people to get to work was a nightmare. Your nonsensing everything I say but there your words against mine. People can do their own research if they are interested enough, which I doubt they are.

Have to admit, I was more upst about the Queen Mum passing than I was Diana, never trusted that womans eyes, sly, woman if ever I saw one I hope the boys will be happy no matter what they do. Love is good.

Here in Canada, there is a large segment of the population who are avid royal watchers and also many who couldn't care less. Yet it is safe to assume that most of us Canucks do wish the young couple all the best in their upcoming nuptials and wish them a long and happy marriage. We do realize that it is very tough for any in the royal family to have any semblance of normalacy in their private lives when they are followed by milliuons who inspecrt their every move. Now if any one of us got caught cheating or acting out in public, the media don't give a damn. It's only if we are a public figure that the media pays any attention. Sad part is we are the ones who placed the royal family on a pedestal and then turn around and knock them down when they screw up. They aren't perfect yet we expect them to be perfect - go figure.

The other reason the media are so into this here in the UK at the moment is that it's "silly season" - there's not much else for them to latch on to. The coalition government have outlined their plans [8\|] and so it's a case of waiting to see how hard the axe falls, a lot of summer sporting events are over, and it's all gone a bit quiet. How many more examples like this do I need to give you? On the other hand, can you show me lots of examples - or indeed any examples at all - of how any of our royalty changed society for the better? What, exactly, did the Queen Mother actually do for us other than simply remain alive for God knows how long, poncing millions off us all, before dying and taking her ultra-snobbish, pro-Nazi, bigoted, racist views with her? Honestly - as I'll continue to say - I don't care if certain people want to fawn over the royals, so long as they don't try to justify it for all of the UK's people in some rational way. Our monarchy just isn't justifiable in a rational way. Your only sensible point of view here is that you're fond of them. I am not fond of them, as you may have gathered. Please don't demand the same fondness from me as you have, unless you have reasons why I should be so (reasons beyond, that is, that of some whimpered 'Well, it's only nasty lefties who don't like them).

I confess I was really creeped when I saw the pic of Kate wearing that ring! I know that heirlooms are a tradtion everywhere, but shoot, there wasn't another ring they could have dusted off? Oh, if someone tried to take away my right to own a gun? It would not be happy. If somehow the royals took a step back, not quite the same.

I thought the engagement ring was sweet. It's a son who loved his mother and wants to be able to share that love with his fiancee. I plan on giving my daughter my and her father's rings one day in hopes that she'll maybe want to wear them or use them in her wedding.

Has anybody actually ever met a tourist that came to the UK because of the Royals? I see it mentioned several times but I have to report I never met one, a few years ago I lived in London, never met a single tourist, though some tourists fitted Windsor castle into the sight seeing thing, then moved away again but frequently flew back (I think on average 4 to 8 times a month is frequent) and often chatted with people while waiting to board, again, not a single person said they are going to London specifically to see anything related to the Royals. Surely if they are such a huge pull for tourists, somebody would at least admit it?

You also have local tourism in the form of day trippers, thats all spending money that goes back into the economy.

Politesub, they might fit it in, like a trip to the tower or Abbey Road, but I seriously want to meet a few that spend the money on airfare to go to London on account of the Royals, I think it's an urban myth. I understand that people go to Liverpool because the Beatles come from there (though I don't really understand why), and I don't understand why Macca has been knighted and not Keith Richards.

I used to work for BR and we always had tourists calling up wanting to know the best route to see all the sites..not just buck house but doing all the palaces in a day, or tours around the stately homes, Shakespeare stuff, the museums, night life, theatre, but not just for the royals, I remember 77 the silver jubilee had tons of americans lined up to see the queen, hanging off the gates, going to see the changing of the guard. The same for Charles and Di's wedding day. Having said all that, that was more than 30 years ago, so I dunno what the trend is now

Richards refered to a knighthood as complete b*******, which is as good a reason as any for not getting one....lol All I know is whenever I have worked in Victoria there have been flocks of Tourists coming to visit Buck House. Either way its undeniable that they do attract large crowds that have to come from somewhere, and pay for the privilege.
