The Westboro Baptist Church's website now reads "God Hates Oklahoma" and "The Lord curses them by killing Oklahoma's children and casting them into hell. Thank God for more dead children in Oklahoma."

Good grief. Have you seen Louis Theroux’s documentary on them? (the loony sky-pilots I mean). Absolutely staggering; it was the young kids in that family (the main one that runs it) that so upset me. These poor little sods are pressured to spout slogans that clearly upset them, and yet it’s not seen as child abuse, for some reason.

I'm not surprised they didn't turn up though – while I'm a big fan of free speech (though not when taken to those extremes) I dare say that biker gang might have had a more "robust" attitude towards events.

All together now, sing along at the back! ...

... OOOOOOOOOOOOO-Klahoma, where the wind runs rushing from your tyres”

the tires thing- an interesting response- you could even say- that it is free speech-  in kind.   lol

[:(] I have no words.

rulemylife -> RE: Westboro Baptist Church Cheers Child Deaths (11/20/2010 6:22:07 AM)

It's not a "biker gang".

Patriot Guard Riders

The Patriot Guard Riders is a United States motorcycle club that attends the funerals of members of the Armed Forces at the invitation of the deceased’s family.

The group was initially formed to shelter and protect the funerals from protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church, who claim that the deaths of American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are divine retribution for American tolerance of homosexuality.

The Patriot Guard positions itself to physically shield the mourners from the presence of the Westboro protesters by blocking the protesters from view with their motorcade, or by having members hold American flags. The group also drowns out the protesters' chants by singing patriotic songs or by revving motorcycle engines.

Although initially founded by motorcyclists, the organization is open to anyone, regardless of political affiliation, veteran status, or whether they ride or not. The only prerequisite is "a deep respect for those who serve our country; military, firefighters, or law enforcement".

Ah smashing, thanks for that. So they're merely using their right of free speech (and free revving) to drown out the loons? I think that's a very measured response so fair play to them.

I'll read up about them later, as soon as I've finished watching the Macau GP coverage.

Unfortunately, Westboro is also using their right of free speech.

From their website...

As soon as Oklahomans amped up their rebellious worship of the dead and impotent bloody flag—persecuting the saints of God by lawless thugs and their girlfriend Madame Mayor, slashing the tires of the van that carried the words of truth and hope in McAlester—God started killing your young people. You raise them to be proud sinning whores and fags, and now God is bereaving you. Instead of being ashamed for what you have brought to pass on your communities and young people, and mourning for your sin and repenting, you bowed down to the dead body of the 8-year-old slain by God—in pure rage. You don’t care about the dead child; you’re mad at God! The SAME DAY God sent your bike-riding, criminal-minded Sheriff, the ringmaster at that death-watch, to the hospital with a disabling stroke. Listen up perverts! The rod of His wrath is on you. Obey! Repent! Kiss the Son while it is still today!
GOD HATES OKLAHOMA.

People are always talking about how there is no evidence of God well.... there may not be evidence of God but there sure is of the devil. There has to be a greater power that is controlling these people and their children...if not.. then what does this say about the human mind and its capacity for pure hate and evil.

I think you just answered your own question.

pahunkboy -> RE: Westboro Baptist Church Cheers Child Deaths (11/20/2010 6:57:20 AM)

I dont know but- now that this escalates-  it cant help but something very bad to happen over it.

a grieving family is the last one you normally would play mind games with.... someone is going to snap and snap big.   there will be blood.

(IMO)

That was pretty much my point. Westboro are doing something unpleasant under the banner of free speech (and although I think what they’re doing is wrong, I defend people’s rights to free speech, although I think one could possibly argue it goes beyond “freedom of expression”, but hey ho), so instead of popping round and firebombing the Westboro fuckers these other chaps are merely using their rights of free speech to deal with the Westboro mob peacefully.

I'd say that's pretty good going, so I applaud them (the PGR I mean).

I'm surprised there has not been.

and- the dude would walk- as it would be

1. provoked

2. temp insanity-

I do think this targeting of kids is a ramp up.  and I think they pegged Okies as all wrong.  I tend to think the Okies will support not this "protest".    There is a method to the okie madness.     ...so I think they assess that state incorrectly.

I watched Theroux's documentary, I have to say I'm impressed with the dexterity of their support base, I'd expected severe problems on the part of that head woman (the ex-lawyer) in motivating her younger members, but they seem to be just more "girly" versions of her.

But, this is the price we pay for freedom of speech and expression. And loathesome though it is, it is nonetheless a very small price indeed.

On an aside, I find it mildly comical that Louis himself, as an investigator of all things fringe, is coincidentally a little bit of a weirdo himself.

Unfortunately, there is no "greater power" directing their actions; the human mind is all too capable of imagining horrors, and then making them real – witness the Nazis, Pol Pot’s regime, etc – it’s a very long list.

However, it also has the capacity for great love, compassion and courage too. I tend to take comfort in the latter when faced with the former.

Oh and PS: As I stated before, what's being done to the poor children of the Westboro members (in terms of their indoctrination, which to my observers eye seemed more like brainwashing than anything else) is perhaps the saddest thing of all. Although I do recall one of them leaving the church and family when she became older, so sick of the despite and hatred they poured down upon others.

barelynangel -> RE: Westboro Baptist Church Cheers Child Deaths (11/20/2010 7:08:37 AM)

Just so everyone knows, the Patriot Guard is open to anyone who wishes to join them.  You don't need to own a bike.  Its really a great group and its dedication to allow troops to be buried without the family being upset by these assholes is awesome and very emotional.  It doesn't cost anything to join, just your time when you can.  And they are all over the country.  So look them up if you are interested.

Edited to add after reading Rule post down the way -- it appears he already gave this information.  I will leave it however, because i fully believe it bears repeating.

There were a couple of sequences though when one or more of the children started to baulk at what they were told, especially when questioned by Louis. I'm hopeful they'll one day break free of the cycle of despite and bullshit and make their own way in the world. One can but hope.

I don't think you'd find it a "small" price if it were your family's funeral they decided to "protest" at.

But yes, overall I do think it's a price worth paying; freedom of speech and expression mean that for everyone, not just those that the majority agree with.

I do like the non-violent response of those other biking chaps though - it's non-violent and it makes the point, while helping to shield the mourners, so fair play to them.

To be fair, he is a tad odd. But then I don't see that as a bad thing, personally.

Aneirin -> RE: Westboro Baptist Church Cheers Child Deaths (11/20/2010 7:12:22 AM)

I suppose it is very easy to deal with the mad mullah of the Westboro mob, deny them media coverage then let the battle between good and evil ensue, if good always wins in the end, it will be a triumph over evil.

I am understanding evil to be the minority and good to be the majority because I believe the majority of US citizens to be decent and good people.

In other words, when does freedom of speech become a call for war, stamp out the evil in your midst, then look for any other if it becomes a problem to you.
