Status: offline 		A pep rally at a Denver school featured celebs from hip hop and sports. The message: stay in school.  http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_16663883

On one hand, why not?  On the other hand, what sort of motivations should we be using to keep students in school?

Edited to add: And what is the point of keeping students in school if they're so unmotivated that something like this makes them stay?  I want their focus to be on learning, not on being a wannabe celeb.

Status: offline 		Weather I like it or not my children ARE influenced by celebrities,muscians, models,athletes, ect. It is simply a reality.  I think that this tour is a wonderful thing. As a parent I should use any and all resources available to me, EVEN these celebrities and muscians. I think they are recognizing that they do influence how children and young adults behave and are trying to use that influence in a positive way.

I still remember what my high school graduation speaker, a local businessman, said. I repeat it to my students today.

Status: offline 		I agree, far to often its not what we say to our children but how we say it and every child / young adult relates differently. They learn differently. We can't assume they will all get it because as parents or teachers we say it, sometimes we have to think and act outside the box.

This clarified for me what my issue is.

I would LOVE for the students to be motivated by what knowledge can be and can do.  To become aware of the power in being able to DO things.

Having motivated students is wonderful.  I'm not sure that having students who are not motivated makes any sense.  School for them is nothing more than day care.

Status: offline 		If it takes celebs to get kids to stay in school I'm all for it. I'm of the view that if you can at least get them to be in school instead of on the streets it will keep them out of trouble and alive instead of dead and with a motivated and inspiring teacher they just may possibly learn something and keep them there.

I agree that in a perfect world the desire to gain knowledge and to educate themselves would be motive enough. However, the reaity is we don't live in a perfect world. IMO as a society, as parents we have a legal and moral obligation to educate children. Some days they are going to fuss, fight, throw tantrum but we have to stand our ground. We have to use every tool available to us to movtivate them, to reach them. Lets be honest, dropping out of school and selling drugs is alot more appealing to many children especially since they see adults with diplomas and college degrees unemployed. We have a duty to them, heck to our country to do everything in our power to keep them in school.

Great.  Sesame Street, for high school students. 

When are we going to end this insanity of "education is entertainment?"  I thought that we wanted to lower the number of illiterate and innumerate people.

Another way to look at it, is since the link between getting a good education leading to a career and success is broken, you'd better replace it with something. Kids today have figured out they're getting a raw deal, even if they can't defend it with numbers. Since logic isn't going to work to keep kids in school, you have to try something else. The sad fact is that if you're in an inner city and you want to make money- the best way to do it is to become a drug dealer. Your odds are probably better than going to an ivy league school.

This is the same logic that pointed out that if you're without many resources, playing the lottery may in fact, represent your best chance out of the mire. This is what happens when you become a two tiered society.

You know, I was a few times tempted to leave school, working for a big fast food chain with the golden arches for a summer vacation and during weekends sort of convinced me that I really did want to get qualifications, not some guy on TV who's possibly a high school dropout who struck lucky. During university I sort of fell into music and fashion journalism and kept at it after leaving uni (yes, I know, you really need a PhD for that, that's why a few years ago I decided I just might go back to the corporate world before it's too late), the amount of times some chart topping wonder told me "I can't imagine doing anything else than music, really, it's my life!" and I had to bite my tongue to not blurt out "Yes luv, I understand, you wouldn't stand a chance in the job market, you aren't even mentally equipped to ask 'would that be for here or to go, want fries with it?' Keep on grunting into a microphone!" - I gave up counting those occasions...

Status: offline 		In the past the linkage between an education and career success was clear. Your choice was stay in school and you'd get a degree which clearly increased your marketability to the point where you were in demand. Nowadays- that's gone. All the professional degrees are hurting- ranging from doctorates in science to J.D.s to M.Ds- where foreign docs are making inroads, and you can't afford to pay off your loans working as a GP. It's become a crapshoot where it used to be a sure bet. The tradeoff was sticking it through school for enough time and then the career track would be automatic. Given the amount of time and money needed to get a degree- a crapshoot at the end of the road makes it far less appealing which is why we need to import foreign students in the sciences and medicine. (I have no idea about law- we have way too many lawyers anyhow.) At least in music, sports, or entertainment- you know it's a crapshoot up front.

Status: offline 		Depends really, I mean unless you're a super geek and computer genius, most jobs that have a successful career ahead still require a degree, what your degree is in for most employers secondary, what they tend to look at is that you had the determination and commitment to see it through, that you are not a quitter, and where you got it from, if it comes from a place where you can notoriously acquire a degree due to contributions dad made, it might carry less value than if you can show you went to a respected university on a scholarship, and also the work experience you had during your time as a student does count a lot.

Having said that, the fact that Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard doesn't seem to have harmed his career or earning potential, but how many of us have his marketing brains, mathematical genius and luck?
