I'll stick with Santa.

He's much more believable.

Sounds like a plan.

God is a file in which to put information that we don't yet understand. And, to hide things that we don't wish to face.
And, we did not come from monkeys. We share a common ancestor with the great apes. We are great apes, but we are the greatest ape of all, because we invented porn!!!

*raises hand*

Since this thread is talking evolution vs the "poof" theory (poof being God raising his hand and "poof", man is made)..I would like to toss this into the fray.    A prisoner of Catholic school until 15, when I started asking the nuns some questions they couldn't answer, so I will ask here, in line with evolution.....if God created man in his image, why are babies conceived as females until they either get the extra gene or they don't.  Bottom line..when conceived, everyone started out as little Brittney Spears.  If man was Gods image, why wouldn't it be the opposite?

We've got some pretty intelligent folks here...I'm curious as to the responses...since the nuns never did answer me!

Lisa

You're assuming that (a) God is male (or any specific gender, for that matter), and (b) that "in His image" means physically.

Edited to add:

Sorry... after reading the rest of the thread, I see you already got your answer.  [;)]

Just keep in mind that nuns and other religious clergy aren't omniscient.  We are all only human, after all.  [:D]

No difference. Nobody made anything, evolution just happened. I saw a scientist on the Discovery Channel who said in 20 years he will be transforming birds into dinosaurs by turning on and off genetic switches or instructions that remain in the body from previous stages of evolution. In my opinion, he could actually do it now if he wanted to, or if he had to, but he is doing it slowly according to established procedures.

He talked about changing a switch that would make humans grow hair all over their body like we used to have when we were apes and he could make us grow tails again. He's actually done things like that with smaller creatures insects/animals but he stops it before it becomes alive. I probably bookmarked it in Internet Explorer or made a note of it in Microsoft Word somewhere in a file but it would take probably hours to find it now.

would that really make much of a difference to the majority of any religion's beliefs? I mean if a deity/God/Goddess made a monkey, then why would it be such a leap that he/she/it made it so that everything has to evolve?

(FYI: Humans, and chimps may have come from a direct ancestor, but neither evolve from monkeys. Just for clarification there.)

Finally, a definition of God that makes sense to me. I'd never thought to check out the miscellaneous file! Thanks lickenforyou!

And all this time, I thought that god was an invention of the power structure of the era to explain the concept of hell, so as to push it off on somebody else.

PS

OK, let's be fair here. As I've said before elsewhere, just used by some for that purpose.

Before we get all giggling about it, there are some small communities of believers that devote themselves completely to bettering the world, knowing all the while what small difference it makes in any statistical sense.

We might best leave off the obnoxious crowd if we wish to say anything about it.

So your premise is that if evolution was God's choice to create humans, that that is just as valid within the context of religion as the Adam and Eve story.

Actually, I knew a thermodynamics professor that used the third law of Thermo to make an associated point - that evolution, being a transition from a less-ordered state (one celled animals) to a highly-evolved state (humans) was impossible unless an outside force acted upon it - namely God.

Edit: this nonsense was already addressed in later posts.

Because monkeys can't drive Cadillacs?

Better than most Californians.
