WEB FOUNDER: FACEBOOK A THREAT
this is in Politics BECAUSE this dude wants net neutrality.    This issue has come up a number of times on this site- with most of us supporting net neutrality.

Lotsa hot shit on Prison Planet, huh?

Aylee -> RE: WEB FOUNDER: FACEBOOK A THREAT (11/22/2010 10:25:34 AM)

1.  I thought that it was Al Gore that founded the web?

2.  This guy sounds like a whiney baby.  Things are not following his personal vision and so now he wants to cry about it.

Aylee, I don't know if you're trying to be humorous, or nasty.  For the last time though Al Gore NEVER EVER SAID : "I invented the internet", what he said (and I have to paraphrase because I don't remember the exact quote), was : "I wrote the enabling legislation that gave us the internet".

Even conservative hero Newt Gingrich agrees with what he said.  The "I invented the internet" meme began with the Republican National Committee, and was picked up by a lazy fucking press looking for a way to ruin Gore.  Even with that evidence in hand the conservatards still like to whine about the so called "liberal media", what a fucking joke.

I think Berners-Lee is right in what he says - there's a lot of closed network stuff going on and it's not good for anyone.

But I am not sure if his conclusions are correct. Facebook might be another fad, like all the others before it. In ten years time, hopefully, it will be dead and buried. As I understand it, it is yet to make any actual profit. What's the good of that?

Why hopefully?

Facebook is a fantastic site bringing happiness and joy to millions. It makes social and work networking easy and
fun. And nobody is forced to use it

I've never understood the animosity toward facebook by some. I get that it's not for everybody, especially for the non
(lack of a better word) real time folks as it's geared toward actual interaction between people and not fantasy computer
reality but nonetheless, there is something on facebook for everyone. Plus one can make there profile access as tight or
as open as they wish.

As liberals steadfastly refuse to acknowledge the same thing happening to Sarah Palin with the "I can see Russia from my house" comment (which was never made by Sarah, but by comedian Tina Fey lampooning Sarah), I'm none too chuffed about Al being poked about "inventing the internet".   I'd suggest you deal with it.  [;)]

Because I am philosophically opposed to the sort of closed network Facebook is an example of. It might be fun and entertaining, but it needs to be watched carefully. I think of Facebook in the same way as I think of American culture. It's all well and good, but it isn't all there is (this isn't an anti-American rant. Give me a few years and I will be saying Chinese culture). We need to nurture diversity and freedom.

I think we need to be cautious about letting commercial interests consume and divide the web. The thing that makes it work is that it is open and free. As soon as we let that go, then it's just another tool to be used in someone else's interests and not ours.

The link is from Huffonton Post.     Not prison planet- as was implied in an earlier post.

"The more you enter, the more you become locked in. Your social networking site becomes a central platform – a closed silo of content, and one that does not give you full control over your information in it." [emphasis added] from Tim Berners-Lee: Facebook could fragment web

This violates basic privacy principles (although not necessarily privacy laws, depending on the jurisdiction).  A primary goal for fb is to become a marketing/merchandising platform which leverages personal information.  Also, I've noticed that often when fb introduces a feature, the respective privacy controls are disabled by default, requiring active vigilance by users concerned about the privacy of their personal information.

Many consumer technology vendors' wet dream is to create a "closed silo" into which users enter and never leave.

Historical trivia note:  The  internet predates the web by a number of years.

Not sure your point.  TBL invented the web (1991 according to the timeline) not the internet.  There was a statement in an earlier post that Al Gore claimed to have invented the web, which is doubly false: The misinformation started by the RNC was that Gore claimed to have invented the internet which he never claimed.

Apparently I am the only one that remembers it was a Tina Fey bit.  But like the Gore response, the fucking lazy-assed media ran with it, and that does not necessarily exhibit any bias.

As pre-senator Al Franken once said :

“The biases the media has are much bigger than conservative or liberal. They're about getting ratings, about making money, about doing stories that are easy to cover.”

So I won't get used to it, as I expect more from the media.  You on the other hand might like the media to perpetuate an ill-informed and under educated american populace.  I don't really know you well enough to say one way or the other.

Believe it started with the creation of ARPA in 1957

but some count it with the ARPA memo dated April 23, 1963 written by Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider

Others that I know personally go back as far as 1951 with AF project Lincoln (the radar system for national defense created by MIT)

Berners-Lee created the WWW piece of the pie.   I personally was sending messages over the wire in 1980.

KenDckey -> RE: WEB FOUNDER: FACEBOOK A THREAT (11/22/2010 4:16:05 PM)

BTW   I disagree with Berners-Lee   if it is my site why can't I do what I want with it.   If you don't like it, go someplace where you do like it

servantforuse -> RE: WEB FOUNDER: FACEBOOK A THREAT (11/22/2010 4:27:21 PM)

Al Gore maybe didn't invent the internet, but " Love Story " was about Al and Tipper .
