If it didn't go thru the process then the objection is reasonable.  If someone wants to speak on it they should be allowed.   The purpose of a chair is not to dictate but to rule on parlimentary procedure (whichever one is being used).   The parlimentarian isn't the one to rule but he advises the chair.

Yes, I agree with you.  He should have been allowed to speak.

But I can also understand the frustrations that caused her to do that.

Republicans have tried to block every bill on any reason they could come up with.

LaTigresse -> RE: Child Nutrition Legislation (12/2/2010 9:07:16 AM)

From what I've seen the Republican ideal is to be able to be fat and unhealthy with no health insurance and let the rich get richer while the poor get poorer. Just because it is their GOD GIVEN right by golly!!!!!!!!

It's 2 sided.   Remember   Pelosi said that if the Republicans can think of it, it won't happen.  Even if Obama wants it.

Yup and the Democrat ideal is to sit back, collect government checks and whine because the rich mother fuckers get all the breaks. Then they get big brother to make laws that let others raise their kids because little johnny wants a happy meal, but he won't like me if I tell him no.

Or just not let them talk or submit what appears to be a reasonable objection even if no one is listening.

A reasonable objection?

This is just the same obstructionism that Republicans have been using to try and block any legislation sponsored by Democrats.

Whether it is worthy or not Republicans don't seem to care, as long as it scores them political points.

If it didn't go thru the process then the objection is reasonable.  If someone wants to speak on it they should be allowed.   The purpose of a chair is not to dictate but to rule on parlimentary procedure (whichever one is being used).   The parlimentarian isn't the one to rule but he advises the chair.

For Republicans to have a reasonable objection, they would first need to have principles that those objections are based on. As Tazzy pointed out above, the Republican Party (and those silly Tea Baggers) are 'for' less goverment, not more. That is their principle. So when they are holding up something, because it doesnt have enough goverement in it, I call B.S.!

This is the same stupid and silly tactics the GOP has done since Mr. Obama came to the White House. The 'Party of No', cares not for Americans, just merely themselves. This, sadly, is just one more perfect example of their 'principles' on display.

Good nutrition, proper exercise, healthy learning, are all ways we help the next generation be better, it a world ever increasing pushing the 'cough potato' syndrome of working at a computer for 12 hours. I am not at all surprise they made a stand on this. Apparently, Republicans are against this as well. Why would they want health, intelligent and educated Americans; those people seem to always vote Democrat?

mnottertail -> RE: Child Nutrition Legislation (12/2/2010 10:38:39 AM)

cough potato.....

LOL, couch.

It would seem that this would promote the general welfare, and that is constitutional, so I rather wonder why we will ignore this but send money for Iraq.

This isnt happy meal territory. Whole wheat bread, lean meat, less junk food in vending machines.... i really dont get what there is to object too about this measure.

~FR

This from last april... amazing how long it takes to get these things through the house and senate... simply amazing

The Senate bill reauthorizes several antihunger programs for children, but its biggest impact would be felt in schools that offer free or cut-rate meals. The bill would give the Agriculture Department new powers to set nutritional standards for any food sold on school grounds, particularly junk foods that contribute to obesity. It would expand the use of local farm products, organic food and school gardens, and require the government to notify schools more quickly about tainted foods. It also provides the first real increase in funding in 40 years.

The bill can and should be improved when it reaches the floor. President Obama — no doubt nudged by Michelle Obama, who has personally campaigned for better nutrition — asked for an additional $10 billion over the next 10 years for child nutrition. The Senate version provides only $4.5 billion extra. The Senate should also ban all trans fats, a cause championed by Kirsten Gillibrand, a Democrat from New York.

The driving force behind the House bill is Representative George Miller, a California Democrat, who is expected to ask for stronger food safety regulations. He also seeks more money for fighting childhood hunger and obesity, especially in the schools.

In many ways, this is yet another side of the health care issue because better childhood nutrition is preventive medicine at its best. The new federal powers proposed in these bills would improve what millions of young Americans eat every day — and improve their chances of a healthy life.

Lets not concern ourselves with the health and well being of america.
Lets not worry about obesity as an issue at all.
Lets not look at life expectancy, the cost associated, the health risks involved, or the education of our children.
Lets just worry about the fat cats getting theirs.

LaTigresse -> RE: Child Nutrition Legislation (12/2/2010 11:24:05 AM)

Using fast reply...

I think that the really sad part is that both sides like to over dramatize, use the extremes. Even, as in this case and many others, when it just makes sense. Regardless of who had the bright idea. Unfortunately, partisanship rules.

tazzygirl -> RE: Child Nutrition Legislation (12/2/2010 11:25:13 AM)

Sadly enough, this started out as a bipartisan bill.

LaTigresse -> RE: Child Nutrition Legislation (12/2/2010 11:26:58 AM)

And how unfortunate that the game playing morons couldn't just keep it that way....

That is all politics is anymore......fucked up games with the citizens as their pawns.

tazzygirl -> RE: Child Nutrition Legislation (12/2/2010 11:30:41 AM)

And we are the idiots who keep putting them back into power.

As an aside, i made a comment on these boards just after the last election cycle that, depending on how the Republicans act will spell out the next election cycle.

Bets anyone?

Termyn8or -> RE: Child Nutrition Legislation (12/2/2010 11:52:16 AM)

"And we are the idiots who keep putting them back into power."

And our choices are.......... ?

The only solution is to dismantle the "ole boy" network and get some people in there. It's all a bunch of shit right now.

And school lunches aren't going to do it. Go to a Convenient store somewhere and look what people are buying. Young Americans don't eat right ? I guess so, in this case young means "not dead yet". Kids at the candy rack buy things that I wouldn't rub on my skin at gunpoint. Parents are lazy and feed them what they want, not what they need.

The nutritional situation in this country is hell. What's more the government is who allows companies to market poison. This candy and all that junk is like a drug. Laden with salt and sugar at levels that would make a good doctor fall over. Olestra and hydrogenateds, additives and preservatives, even virii. That's right, they put a disease in the milk to extend shelf life, and raw milk is illegal to sell. You can't even give the little ones milk !

It's a damn shame, and the scary part of it is that alot of them probably know all about it. It's been said that one should not attribute to malice that which can be explained by stupidity, but that is getting more easily said than done by the year.

And it may surprise many that owners of fast food resaurants rarely if ever eat what they sell. Just like successful illegal drug dealers, they do not consume their own product.

tazzygirl -> RE: Child Nutrition Legislation (12/2/2010 11:53:51 AM)

Uh huh.. and when the only opportunity for many children to eat is the meal they have at school....

Not taking that bet at all because I happen to agree with Bill Maher, that, (and I paraphrase) "Americans are like dogs they understand tone and inflection, but not the actual words".  Bill expressed this in his last show of the season, and he nailed it with that sentiment.

Most American's have become so used to the GOP's appeals to the lizard portion of our brains, they either follow blindly, or ignore them.  I blame not just the politicians, but my fellow americans, for being over-fed, undereducated, ill-informed couch slugs, that will vote more for a fucking "American Idol" than they do in a general election.

I have often heard the following attributed to the late great H.L. Mencken, but have never found definitive proof of who actually said it:  "Americans have the government they think they want; therefore the government they deserve"

It, sadly, is more true every presidential election, and every mid-term.

Politically,
Some Knucklehead in NJ

tazzygirl -> RE: Child Nutrition Legislation (12/2/2010 11:58:08 AM)

Oh i completely agree the American government is exactly what we deserve.

Termyn8or -> RE: Child Nutrition Legislation (12/2/2010 12:01:44 PM)

Some, not all.

Actually, in this part of the country, a majority of the SSI, EBT and other welfare recipients are HARDCORE Republicans
