I can count 1 to 10 in French. LOL...that's all I remember from a year of French in high school.

I can speak Pittsburghese which is a language all in itself if you're from there hehe.

I know a little bit of Dutch and French, but I can do a lot of accents fluently, lol.

Demonic.

It'll be a language one day, you'll see.

I knew French before I learned English. I guess my foreign parents figured I'd learn that in school. I did but it sucked...got picked on and didn't even know what they were saying or how to say anything to them.

I was born and raised French Canadian, so obviously that's my maternal language.  I learned to speak English when I was about 3-4 yrs old because everyone else in the neighborhood spoke it.  And I learned a few years of Spanish in high school, and even though it's been 30 yrs, if it's spoken to me slowly and simply I can still understand most of it.  I can still speak it a bit too, though I wouldn't want to try it on a full time basis.  As for accents?  Leave me with someone for 1/2 day and I've picked up their accent.  And no, contrary to what some people think I'm not making fun of their native tongue, I actually pick up the accent and incorporate it in either English or French.  I can also understand some German, though not much.

I was fluent in Spanish thirty years ago.  I now have a flawless accent and hardly any vocabulary to go with it.

I speak Spanish (about intermediate level).  I speak enough Korean to get by.

Whenever I travel, I try to learn how to say at least "thank you" in their language so that I can be appreciative to all the kind people who help me - so I can say thank you in... French, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Que'chua, and Arabic.

In most of the world - or at least the cities - you can get by with English.  The rest, the countryside, I find a giving heart, a big smile, and an open mind gets me through even when we have no words that mesh.  That's one of the joys of not knowing the language - finding the commonalities without the words.

I enjoy the non-word verbalizations a lot - the ooo's and ahh's and the mmm's and uh huh's of other languages a lot - each one has their own.  I was speaking Spanish the other day to a friend of mine who started to do the Korean non-word verbals in the midst of our talk.  I told him he'd been here too long!

best,
sunshine

My parents got a 6 week old puppy when I was 8 weeks old. I was an only and was on My own a LOT. I probably learned to speak'dog' before I learned human.

I get along better with them than most people too.

tiggerspoohbear -> RE: What foreign (non-native) languages do you speak? (12/6/2010 6:30:43 PM)

Yes, but you speak English in such a lovely manner. [:)]

And it's been many years since I've written French (now that sucks the big one I will admit) but I can help you in speaking French.  I still have relatives who speak nothing but. [8|]

Lucylastic -> RE: What foreign (non-native) languages do you speak? (12/6/2010 6:32:02 PM)

DesFIP -> RE: What foreign (non-native) languages do you speak? (12/6/2010 6:32:38 PM)

I used to be fluent in Spanish. Well coastal Ecuadorian to be honest. In that I sounded like a native years ago but like so many other things, use it or lose it. And I've lost it.

Hillwilliam -> RE: What foreign (non-native) languages do you speak? (12/6/2010 6:39:58 PM)

And a damn fine tail it is.

TreasureKY -> RE: What foreign (non-native) languages do you speak? (12/6/2010 7:31:01 PM)

Firm is fluent in German, but doesn't use it as much as he used to.

I can get by in a pinch with French.  I had three years in school, but as I've never had a need for it, my vocabulary sucks.  I could probably have a decent conversation with a three year old.  [;)]
