I speak Spanish (about intermediate level). I speak enough Korean to get by. Whenever I travel, I try to learn how to say at least "thank you" in their language so that I can be appreciative to all the kind people who help me - so I can say thank you in... French, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Que'chua, and Arabic. In most of the world - or at least the cities - you can get by with English. The rest, the countryside, I find a giving heart, a big smile, and an open mind gets me through even when we have no words that mesh. That's one of the joys of not knowing the language - finding the commonalities without the words. I enjoy the non-word verbalizations a lot - the ooo's and ahh's and the mmm's and uh huh's of other languages a lot - each one has their own. I was speaking Spanish the other day to a friend of mine who started to do the Korean non-word verbals in the midst of our talk. I told him he'd been here too long! best, sunshine
