So, now that Limewire has shut down, what is everyone doing for *cough* legal *cough* downloads?

thishereboi -> RE: Music downloads (12/6/2010 4:28:57 PM)

Same thing I have always done when I wanted music. I go out and buy the cd[:)]

Termyn8or -> RE: Music downloads (12/6/2010 4:40:39 PM)

Bearshare seems to run just fine.

Incidentally, what does this work when IT sleeps or something ? I swear I didn't have this or that and in the morning it shows I do. I kniow the difference between exiting and minimizing, I mean things just seem to show up at times.

Incidentally if you want Bearshare go to oldversion dot com and get Bearshare lite 5.2.5, that's the version to have. It nags for an upgrade, and sometimes even closes when you say no, but you just restart it and it is fine.

I pay for mine.  I can't wrap my head around the whole "*cough* legal *cough*" thing.  Stealing is stealing.  I don't want someone stealing from me.  If I were to make the music, I sure wouldn't want people to steal my hard work.

I don't use it very often, and it's usually for music I can no longer find, but frostwire was still there last time I looked.  Just make sure the song you're d/l is the actual one.  I've had a few duds, but for the most part, it's been good.

DesFIP -> RE: Music downloads (12/6/2010 6:37:46 PM)

Bittorrent I hear recommended.

Termyn8or -> RE: Music downloads (12/6/2010 8:48:48 PM)

"I pay for mine."

Commendable, but I paid for mine. Of all the albums or CDs I bought over the years to get one song MULTIPLE TIMES. I paid.

i know an unjust villainous person who uses utorrent, this scum bag also uses piratebay to find them. when his mouth isnt filled with the souls of the innocent he doesnt recommend frostwire as the 'wires' tend to destroy comps, in his experience.

My issue with buying cd's from the store, is that 90% of the time, there's only one or two (or in the rare case, 4 or more) songs that I like.

Or, as Termyn8or said, buying several different albums, and getting the same song on them 5+ times - Aerosmith is probably the worst when it comes to this. (I can list 4-5 albums where the same song appears on all 5)

As a side note, I prefer Usenet access myself. I've found a BOATLOAD of B-sides/rarities on there that haven't been released.

limewire shut down?

well, shit.. there went my chances for finding the band Hurricane...

NuevaVida -> RE: Music downloads (12/6/2010 11:15:49 PM)

I buy songs from iTunes.  Don't have to buy the whole CD/album - can just select individual songs.

I never used Limewire.  I always heard it dumped a lot of spyware on your computer.  I don't have an issue paying a dollar a song.

DomImus -> RE: Music downloads (12/7/2010 5:47:33 AM)

I subscribed to my first real internet service (Netcom) in May 1995. I was on Usenet within a month. It still boggles my mind how few people who use the internet daily have no idea what Usenet is.

What reader do you use?

DCWoody -> RE: Music downloads (12/7/2010 8:16:19 AM)

Didn't know it was still going.
I bet the network is still up, it's just the site/brandname they ever manage to kill.
Personally, I don't bother....you can easily get stuff from youtube. If youtube doesn't have it, google a torrent.

Tanijaana -> RE: Music downloads (12/7/2010 8:43:22 AM)

I've been going to YouTube, yanking the URL, and putting it through mytinyphone to rip out the audio.

windchymes -> RE: Music downloads (12/7/2010 9:04:14 AM)

Walmart downloads used to be 89 cents, but I think they're up to 99 now.

I had seen some ads for Rhapsody, and they're offering a free trial and then $9.99/mo., and I thought this meant you could download from there, but since their wording is "listen" to as many as you want, as many times as you want, but they don't say anything about downloading, so I'm assuming they charge to do that. I was wondering if anyone here had experience with that site?

There is a lot of music out there that isn't available on the iTunes or Walmart download site, which is why I like to search around the p2p sharing sites. Some people have put their old and sometimes obscure vinyl out there, stuff that is just not available to purchase, or is even available on CD,..... and I have what I consider an amazing mp3 player, lol.

I'm sleeping just fine at night. [:)]
