The problem here is, people are getting paranoid about terrorism.
If a parcel company is so concerned that they could be delivering a bomb, why don’t they use scanners? No matter that the guy that’s sending the parcel looks and behaves like a terrorist, his ID says that he is Jimmy Smith from NY so he must be ok!
Incoming foreigners won’t/don’t have them anyway and terrorists often come from other lands.
How much do these ID cards cost? And how much does it cost to replace a lost or damaged one? Do you need to pay again if you change your address? We change our address constantly because we live on a boat.
And what if the card is lost? How valuable is that micro chip to the black market?
If it becomes the de-facto method of identification then an ID card becomes the one item that is worth the effort to steal and if more and more companies are allowed access to your biometric information, the more accessible decoding machines will become available to the guys who really want them.... the criminals.
What happens to this system if our computers and networks go down?
I have always believed that the ID card is a silly idea. There are too many flaws and those plastic critters make data mining easy. Up until now, I haven’t found a good enough reason to use one.
I'm guessing that its not compulsory to carry an ID card in the US but by making it more and more difficult to do a transaction without one, it might as well be.
