One of the many things that pisses me off about the haves versus the have-nots is their profound sense of injury if their dignity is affronted.  Examples:

1. The nation's bankers commit fraud.  Documents are falsified to make borrowers eligible when they shouldn't have been, appraisals are fraudulent, the resulting mortgage-backed securities are falsely stated to be AAA investments, and the criminals behind it all give themselves massive bonuses.  The house of cards collapses, and the companies are handed massive government bailouts. To punish them, the CEOs are chewed out by Congress.

2. President Nixon is overseeing the government when some of his underlings bug the DNC.  His office resists the subsequent criminal investigation, and introduces the unprecedented concept of "executive privilege" to obstruct justice.  Evidence is clearly tampered with.  He is pressured to resign from office and pardoned because he had "suffered enough".

3. President Clinton commits perjury.  He is impeached.

4. Charles Rangel is censured.  That means he is told that he is a naughty boy in front of his peers. This is his punishment for misuse of funds and tax evasion.

You get the idea.  These are people that would be subject to criminal charges if they were everyday citizens like you or I.  Because they are the high and mighty, they get public criticism instead of jail terms and fines.

Okay, I feel better now.  A little.

"It's not illegal when the President does it!"

--Richard Nixon

You are talking about people who see themselves as above the law, the ruling class.

Americans are becoming consensual slaves.

The difference is that there are more of Us than there is of Them.

I would also like to add that america was built on slavery in some form or another.

On 1, for the most part those in the business units that failed did not get bonuses. More importantly, you didnt cite any criminal activity so the righteous indignation is misplaced and should be with the regulators that abetted and encouraged their actions.

On 2, the punishment was actually worse than the crime, and its not even close. The same dirty tricks were being played by both parties, the Dems just didnt get caught. The actual breakin, if committed by a non-pol wouldnt even have been prosecuted. Nixon was guilty of unthinking loyalty and stupidity, and his resignation appropriate but certainly not getting away with anything.

On 3, the punishment fit that particular crime. The main fault re WJC lies in that he was never prosecuted for and that the public overlooks his sexual predation and sociopathy. Slick? Slimy is a lot closer.

On 4, afaik, the misuse of funds issue is not dead yet, and he could face criminal charges. The rest of the stuff I agree, censure is meaningless, but typical of what pols get away with that you and I would pay heavy fines or go to jail for.

But ...at least we live in a society that knows its failings... they are not and do not remain hidden from everyday citizens. Just knowing the past often prevents it from easily happening again in the future.

will, a bit of clarification. When you say regulators do you mean the actual people who went to the banks to check them out or the people who were above them and told them what to report, pulled them from the banks, pushed for and attained lax rules/regulations for banks? If the former... well, think about it. If the latter; that's more or less who Steven is talking about.

This is quite a few galaxies away from anything resembling the reality as ascertained in numerous congressional hearings and investigations, along with SEC and CFTC investigations, and quite a few lawsuits currently in process and many more to come from pension funds, banks, capital management firms, mutual funds, etc, against the fraudsters, as reported in the financial news and even a surprising bit in the mainsteam news. Most of it is not strictly speaking criminal activity because Phil Gramm made sure that the CDOs and credit default swaps were prohibited from the purview of the SEC or the CFTC and neither they nor congress had any idea about the legality of them or in some cases that they even existed. There is such a thing as fraud without a specific criminal code outlining it. That's what civil suits are for.

As for the bonuses, Citigroup and AIG alone paid more than $260 million each in bonuses for their "top talent" driving them into the dirt with the most fundamentally flawed bets imaginable. All the top recipients of bail-out money had huge losses and yet paid the same huge bonuses.

Massive fail, massive bonuses.

My reference to regulators was the top end...Congress and the Financial Service Committee and their toys Fannie and Freddie. And that is not what I read DS as talking about, which was the bankers themselves who only responded to what they were given or was demanded of them.

If DS were talking about Barney Frank, Maxine Waters, Frederick Raines et al Id sharpen the knife to cut their balls off. (and yes, I suspect Waters' has em)

Go back to moveon.org. You dont have a clue. No "fraudulent" bonuses were paid, and the managers of failed business units who's compensation was based on their results didnt get their bonuses. Salesmen got the bonuses they were contractually obligated to get for doing what they were told.
