Cancun COP16

This year, CFACT students created two mock-petitions to test U.N. Delegates. The first asked participants to help destabilize the United States economy, the second to ban water.

...

The second project was as successful as the first. It was euphemistically entitled “Petition to Ban the Use of Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO)” (translation water). It was designed to show that if official U.N. delegates could be duped by college students into banning water, that they could essentially fall for anything, including pseudo-scientific studies which claim to show that global warming is man-caused.

...

almost every delegate that collegian students approached signed their petition to ban that all too dangerous substance, which contributes to the greenhouse effect, is the major substance in acid rain, and is fatal if inhaled.

Heres a link to a Penn and Teller video that did the same thing at another "environmentalist event".

I'd say that the students succeeded in showing that "if official U.N. delegates could be duped by college students into banning water, that they could essentially fall for anything,"

And some people wish to allow these types of people to restructure our civilization?

And they weran't staying at the "Motel 6", they were staying at a huge luxury resort! Anyone know the name of it?
Didn't the "9-11 Truthers" stay there a while back too?
Funny, they just ignore the sun and it's flare-ups and big spots on it, no *money* to be made (there) is there?

The Cancun delegates must be as intelligent as the people who ONLY get their news from Fox or MSNBC.

It's all that fucking gold, mate: large masses of metal play hell with heating somewhere when it's below freezing outside.

This is why I support the diffusion of power (e.g. greater local autonomy, states right, etc.) rather than its concentration at the top - it reduces the amount of damage that the self annointed moral and intellectually superior can do to us.

It increases the influence self appointed busybody groups can have, though.

No it doesn't because it makes it easier to hunt them down and shoot them.

Okay, okay, before anyone blows a gasket, that was a joke.

Seriously though, it is eaiser to remove the corrupt and the incompetent from local levels than national ones. It is also easier to bring about change because you have less people to convince.

The thing is, many people believe really dumb stuff which has little in the way of evidence to support it. Some people, for example, believe in 'God' and that 'God' created the heavens and the earth and came here once disguised as his own son so he could be slaughtered for our sins. I mean, that's batshit crazy, right? I even heard some people believe in an invisible hand which keeps everything sweet whilst we get fleeced by bastards. It's all crazy-ass stoopid shit.

But duping a bunch of people to sign a petition which would never stand a chance of being acted on is one thing. It's funny, but ultimately it's a joke.

Getting a bunch of people to actually act on the ramblings of an imaginary deity or an imaginary hand - now, that takes real skill...

If they have to "convince" anyone then they don't have a good product.
Can you imagine 30,000 anal-retentives in one place all rearanging their silverware at dinner! lol

Right.

The invisible hand (usually misrepresented by its opponents) only works in a free market economy backed up by the rule of law. Our economy is not a free market but one heavily regulated (nor is it backed up by the rule of law) to benefit the few at the expense of the many. One of the biggest myths (false beliefs) out there is the notion that businesses and corporations love the free market because it apparently lets them run roughshod over the powerless. The truth is that businesses and corporations HATE the free market because it allows competition. That is why corporation involve themselves in politics, so they can slant regulations (always presented as being for the greater good) in their favor.

I think it was P.J. O’Rouke who said, “when buying and selling is controlled by legislatures, the first thing to be bought and sold is legislators.”

It is more than a joke. It demonstrates that these people act upon their bias rather than skepticism and reason (nothing unique in that). They heard the word “chemical” and immediately presumed it was bad. Then they heard the words like “corporations” and “in our lakes,” and that was enough for them. No thought was given to the possibility that “I might not have all the facts.”

Actually, considering human history, I’d say it was rather easy. Getting people to act upon unbiased reason… that’s hard.

I dunno 'bout that. It seems to me people are convinced to by crappy products or ideas all the time. How else can we explain the popularity of Lady Gag-Gag and Juntin Bubbles (or whatever the hell their names are).

No. But then I've never been to any Republican fund raising dinners.

Bottom line is, as usual, the people making policy for climate management (or lack of same) couldnt pass a college chemistry class if their life depended on it.

Dayum.  This one was going around when I was in high school.  (The petition, that is.)  Along with a petition to end women's suffrage.

I will point out however that most people will comply with a request when given a reason.  As in. . . "Would you sign this petition [request] so that we can ban H2O [reason].

Also, signing a petition requires little from the person signing.  They do not have to act on their signature.

Although I would agree that the UN can be duped into just about anything.  Like putting Iran on the UNCSW.

To the OP only at this time.

DHMO scare properties :

Easily dissolvable.
Has about a three year gestation period.
More people believe it every time around.

Actually I am starting to think they should ship all the DHMO on this planet to the moon. Maybe then people will dry up.
