ORIGINAL: truckinslave "That's a genuine shame if it's true. I tend to see America as a fairly enlightened country" How condescendingly nice of you. I have a different impression of England, but that's not the point here. How many Muslims have been elected PM? Atheists?? Muslims are, after all, a far larger percentage of your population..... It wasn't condescending in the slightest. I tend to view America, with its written and enabled Constitution (as fine an ideal as is possible to get) to be a genuinely enlightened place, in terms of attitude. The more I read, however, the more it seems clear that people really do consider religion to be a far more important factor in a person’s political chances than their intellect and abilities. We haven’t had a Muslim PM yet, no. We had a woman, mind, which puts us one step ahead of the US on the “equality” front, but frankly Maggie was a bit of a disaster, so that might colour things for anyone else trying. I for one wouldn’t see someone being Muslim as a barrier to election here, although things are more racially divided further north (I live in London) and generally speaking people here seem far less concerned about a person’s religious beliefs when electing them to office than in the US. Which I would consider a good thing, generally. As to “atheist” PMs, well the last one to make any kind of song and dance about being Christian was Tony Blair, although Cameron is “quietly Christian” – generally speaking it really isn’t a topic of interest to most voters, but that would presumably be because a much larger proportion of Brits than Americans are either non-religious, or don't consider it a factor. We have Muslim councillors and MPs, and there have been Muslim junior Ministers, so I would think it’s only a matter of time before a good candidate becomes PM. Of course there will be those who try the scare tactic approach when it happens, but I doubt very much they’d succeed in making it that big a deal.
