This afternoon at work ( i work in a pan asian restaurant) a table came in. nothing different from many other group of people. they were chinese, which, in itself isnt unusual, except what happened after the waiter approached. During the order taking process, this group realized he spoke no chinese. In actuality, we have only one server and one bartender who do. Again, usually not a problem. Except with this table. They demanded the waiter ( who is new to the job) go "find someone" who could speak chinese. Again, if no one at the table could speak english, i may even accept that. But this was a family, with a young man who i took as being the son, who spoke english extremely well. The manager/investor was brought into the process... again, understandably, at the tables request.
Im just found this all disturbing because this restaurant is in the US. If i were to go to china, i would not expect to find many english speaking people... perhaps that is my own irrational judgement. But to assume because you are going to an asian restaurant that you will find everyone speaking chinese is a bit.. racist.
It can flow both ways.. and often does. We can be racist against a group... or racist in favor of our own. What i find appaling is that people immigrate, legally or illegally, to other countries and do little to nothing about trying to blend in to the new culture. In the US, its a backlash against such people that is causing much of the attitudes against illegal immigration.
