but Israel is bordered exclusively by states, the majority of whose populations would be quite happy if she were to vanish into non-existance. Further, her armed forces have been used largely against aggressive incursion, not AS aggressive incursors.

Funniest thing I've ever seen you write. I salute you [;)]

BTW you were saying previously that the military were "killers". That doesn't actually change if they're conscripted, but not to worry. A number of moral contradictions are doubtless inevitable when walking such a fine line.

There are no contradictions in my case, moral or otherwise. A conscriptee usually doesn't want to fight, and even less to kill. The true psycho LOOKS for a reason to kill, and finds it, in beautifully legal format, complete with the pretext of "I'm just defending my country!!", by volunteering to join the armed forces.

Isn't that 'Hide' button looking so much more tempting this morning?

Ah ok, so military=bad, but Israeli military=good. Got it.

I have to say I do find it odd that you're perfectly sanguine supporting (by holidaying there, thus funding their economy) a state which has a) utilised its military to kill civilians of foreign nations, b) targeted and killed journalists trying to report on possible atrocities in areas it is involved in conflicts in, and c) used its secret police to murder people it considers its enemies on other nations' soils, and yet you get miffed by American citizens verbally supporting their service personnel.

The “Hide” button is not “looking so much more tempting this morning” because you're debating reasonably, without use of bile, but I have to say what respect I had for your position has evaporated with your most recent comments. I believed you were taking a moral stance against something you believed deeply in, but the fact you're prepared to prop up a state that commits such heinous acts of violence, espionage and murder, in the name of a sunny holiday with a few fit chicks thrown in, really does both surprise and disappoint me. Seriously, I'm actually genuinely surprised. Shocked even, now I think about it.

Israel has a right to defend itself, absolutely it does. But many of its actions go far beyond reasonable “defence” parameters, and on occasion venture into state-sponsored terrorism territory. I would have thought that sort of thing would be an anathema to you.

Fucking archaic, but it still saved me twice, when I was somewhere (in the middle of bunghole nowhere) that had no broadband and no mobile signal. Not sure anyone would bother these days, TBH.

OTOH, you don't realise how data-transmission intensive modern apps like Outlook are until you've used them via a 56k modem.

"We've come a long way, baby!"

1 word: Cornwall... I recall that this summer I was wading out during low tide, holding up my mobile to get my text messages. There are also some dead spots in Kent and around Buxton.

I still have a dongle somewhere, but with the new generations of smart phones the mobiles do all the tricks.

I used to have a Mac for work and PC for me, a few years ago I ditched the PC (though certain things about Macs and Apple policies do wind me up just a tad), just looking at how fast technology goes is amazing. Comparing my old laptop to the MacBook Air, it was like lugging a ton of bricks around, not to mention memory and battery durability...

Though it's amazing how things go in circles, as a teenager I was fascinated by LISP, then almost obsolete, it seems to make a comeback now, for a while everybody went Java then that tapered off, other half's company was recently looking for a real Java guru and they're in high demand now.

A few years ago tons of email were required (which generated more responses and you waded through them and lost time) now you use Confluence or something similar and it's all relatively easy.

I love my shiny toys almost as much as my shoes (and if you call me Imelda I kick you, not quite that bad...)

There are quite a few dead spots in the UK, for data at least. Admittedly usually in places you wouldn't want to stay for long, but they're there. Or were.

There's also the problem (or was 2 years ago) that (and I'm guessing as to what happens, but I'm pretty sure I'm right), if anything is going to get "cut" when a certain cell area gets close to its maximum capacity, then it's going to be data, not voice. We noticed this constantly; you could conf call via voice no problem, but the data would drop in and out (or slow to a crawl), despite the reception being strong - my guess would be that, when a given mast gets close to its maximum capacity, the control software throttles or drops the data stream in order to maintain voice comms - this is would make sense, as high-speed data takes up more capacity than voice comms.

We experimented with using different data dongles with different providers, to the point I was carrying 3 from different companies at one point, but it didn't seem to make any difference.

After reading all the responses so far on this thread, I've come to the conclusion that I must not be reading much of what is posted here in the forums.  I just haven't really seen a lot of bigoted, hateful, self-righteous, or mean people posting.  Either that, or there's only one or two people like that and it just happens that everyone has them blocked....  [:)]

I think you might have something there.  Other than the people who occasionally put up icky pickies, I've only had 2 people on hide for longer than a couple of days - those two are on hide for the long haul.  The third I just put on the other day.

As a side note, I've reached a perfect solution for unwanted guests at my front door.  I just don't answer it.  It's my door and there's no requirement that I open it for anyone just because they knock or ring the bell.  Same goes for the phone.  [;)]

I do the same thing!  I do get frustrated if someone says "HEY call me at such and such a time!" and I do, and they don't answer.  That irritates me mostly because there aren't many hours in the day when we are both actually up.  And I *miss* my friends so very much!

Look at that Treasure... we are thinking alike again.. scary!

I'm not sure you're completely right there, the data can be broken up and transferred in packages as far as I know, with voice you can't do that or you're losing quality, remember before everything was satellite and you called the US, you had the echos and delays, you sometimes get that with mobiles too and I assume it could be due to the capacity being close to maxed out.

Ok maybe, but high-speed data takes more capacity, on a per second basis, than voice, so surely it makes sense that, when capacity gets close to maxed out, that they'd throttle data first and voice second?

Also, IIRC, all voice comms are now digital too, meaning that what they do with voice when it gets close to max is drop to a lower fidelity profile (i.e. throttle the digital bandwidth) so the quality is slightly reduced but the line remains intact?

Also also, people get more wound up by loss of voice than data - not many people use data compared to voice, so surely they'd give that first dibs on bandwidth?

Not sure. Need an expert. I know one, but he's in Japan ATM and won't thank me for calling [;)]

LadyConstanze -> RE: When you hide an idiot... (12/17/2010 4:01:24 AM)

My expert is at the company Xmas lunch and since I know the lot, I assume by now they're already a few sheets into the wind and I don't expect him back until errrr late, and then I doubt I'll get much sense out of him.

"Ish ... ish ... data innit! So you get thish data, look you, and then theresh thish voish thingy, right? So voish, thash one thing *burp* and data, thash another thing yesh? So ..."

LadyConstanze -> RE: When you hide an idiot... (12/17/2010 4:13:34 AM)

Let me put it this way, I am preparing one of the guest rooms as I think 1st floor will be fine, don't want to risk him taking more stairs than absolutely needed, do not want to sleep anywhere near drunken snores and fumes, don't want to be woken up by announcements that he's dying and needs a bucket (bucket in guest room and toilet right next to guest room - great arrangement), oh and I will slip dog and cat treats under the pillow and maybe my speakers in the office will point at the wall to the guest room and listen to a bit of punk rock tomorrow morning... If that doesn't help, the cats and dog might slip into the room and they have such sensitive noses for treats. In case I feel exceptionally cruel, I might even whisper in Kia's ear "Where's daddy? Walkies?"

But I'm not completely cruel, I might stock up on aspirin

I'm used to feeling sorry for the welsh, but that's a new low, even by their standards [;)]

I'm even feeling some sympathy for him, FFS!

LadyConstanze -> RE: When you hide an idiot... (12/17/2010 4:31:13 AM)

Can you really feel sympathy with a man who photographs his other half in the innocent act of feeding a lamb and then mails said picture to all mutual friends with a comment that makes innocent act look very suspicious?

heh.

To be fair, I can never feel genuine sympathy for the welsh. Only pity [;)]

You're possibly just compensating for losing a few rugby matches against them...

LadyConstanze -> RE: When you hide an idiot... (12/17/2010 5:06:54 AM)

I found playing ignorant and asking them if Gavin Henson is typical for Welsh players and if spray tan and gold chains are a requirement, works great.

I always learn new words that I can't find in any dictionary.

But sadly most of them start with 5 "L"s.

LadyConstanze -> RE: When you hide an idiot... (12/17/2010 5:16:45 AM)

Actually most start with some variation of effing and are quite descriptive

"Llandudno"

"How are you spelling that?"

"Phlegm, phlegm, a, n, d ..."

I'd be careful, or they might tell you what they do with the lamb before it ends on your plate [:D]
