WASHINGTON (AP) -- About 13.4 million taxpayers may be getting unexpected tax bills because they were awarded too much money under President Barack Obama's Making Work Pay tax credit, a government audit said Thursday.

The tax credit, which expires Jan. 1, was designed to increase take-home pay by about $8 a week through new tax withholding tables. The credit was capped at $400 for individuals and $800 for married couples filing jointly.

However, the credit put millions of taxpayers at risk for not having enough taxes withheld from their paychecks, resulting in a tax bill when they file their returns, said the audit by J. Russell George, the Treasury inspector general for tax administration.

Those at risk included people with multiple jobs, married couples who both work, Social Security recipients who also work, and young workers who are also claimed as dependents on their parents' tax returns.

"The Making Work Pay credit is a key tax credit designed to increase spending and stimulate the economy," George said. "However, many taxpayers who are accustomed to receiving refunds when they file their tax returns may have owed taxes and incurred penalties in 2009, and may yet again in 2010, because they were advanced more of the credit than they were entitled to claim."

The Internal Revenue Service reported that the average tax refund was $2,892 in the 2010 filing season, up from $2,663 in 2009. However, the number of refunds dropped by 3.5 percent, to 93.3 million.

The audit says the Making Work Pay credit could have been a factor in the reduced number of refunds.

The credit was Obama's signature tax break in the massive economic recovery package passed in 2009. The IRS moved quickly to start getting the new tax credit to workers, issuing new tax withholding tables four days after Obama signed the law.

About 122 million families and individuals have benefited from the credit, according to the agency's written response to the audit.

The IRS says it undertook an aggressive campaign in 2009 and 2010 to warn at-risk taxpayers that they might not be withholding enough money from their pay, including public service announcements and YouTube videos.

The agency regularly advises taxpayers to check their withholding so they don't get a surprise tax bill when they file their returns.

Oh Christallmighty, 8 dollars a week? An extra $8 a week lavished upon people who do the loliest jobs in society?

We should take them all out and shoot them right now. Just imagine, after a long week's work, they now get an extra two or three frozen dinners per week.


How are we expected to pay the billions after billions in tribute to Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Citigroup, et. al., with these freakin' waste collectors and McDonalds workers stealing an extra $8 per week?


Oh, the humanity!

Wonder if it is the rich that will have to?

Status: offline 		The good news : The tax cuts implimented by the Bush administration will remain in effect. The bi partisan bill is on its way to the Presidents desk. No higher taxes for anyone..

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas has requested 54 earmarks worth more than $170 million and Sen. John Thune of South Dakota has made 43 requests totaling more than $165 million, according to an analysis by Taxpayers Against Earmarks, Taxpayers for Common Sense and WashingtonWatch.com, which collected data from disclosures on Congressional websites.

When asked by Fox News to explain his earmarks, Cornyn said Wednesday, "I believe I can. But I'm not going to, because I'm going to vote against this bill. ... So I am for voting this bill down, even though it could arguably help some of my constituents."

ABC's Jonathan Karl asked Cornyn at a press conference on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, "How do you have any credibility on this?" Cornyn replied, "because we're going to vote against the bill. ... This is the wrong way to do business."

Another reporter asked, "Sen. Thune, I was just looking at the list of earmark requests that you requested this year and it adds up to over a hundred million dollars." Thune responded by saying he supports the projects but doesn't support the bill.

Thune continued to blast Democrats for earmarks.

Nobody among the teabaggers seems to give a fuck about that: they're more interested in trying to co-opt Martin Luther King Day, for reasons which have never been adequetely explained.

There were two dosen republican Senators who tried to slide their pet projects into this. Take off the rose colored glasses.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, for example, said he's unalterably opposed to the bill, but it still had $85 million of his earmarks, including $18 million for a railhead upgrade at Fort Knox and a $3 million infantry squad battle course at Fort Campbell. All told, McConnell obtained 38 earmarks, according to a database put together by the office of Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla.

Other senators with earmarks in the bill after voting last month to ban them included Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn.; Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga.; Richard Burr, R-N.C.; Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas; Bill Nelson, D-Fla.; and Jeff Sessions, R-Ala.

Status: offline 		What I find really amusing, is the amount of conservatives not outraged over this. Since alot of them did re-elect the same Republicans, to do largely the same thing they've done in the past. Yeah, there's 'spending' Democrats, and yes, that does happen. But in this case, only 4 of the offenders were Democrat. 39 of them, were Republican. Where is the storm and fury of anger over the earmarks among conservatives? Dont tell me, you honestly thought Republicans would do better then Democrats on spending?

If I dont see conservatives on here, bashing Republicans at twice the rate they do for Democrats spending stuff; I'll consider your political philosophy to be both a con job and irrelevant. Since you have been bashing Democrats for spending money for a good two years solid. Now...the Republicans are doing the same exact thing. So yes, twice the rate of 'bashing'. That means, at least, seven, FULL, sentences. Of your own thoughts, not a cut/paste job. I could be sadistic, and state, you have to bash EVERY Republican, all 39 of them, with seven individual, full sentences, as if they were Democrats. Oh wait, this is Collarme.com! I can do that too....

Would have been better if those 39 Republicans got the same punishment as those 'indians' who tried to steal the tea, as it was being thrown overboard. Is that why when I called tricare to check on a doctor, they told me that I had to have a preauthorization to get foreign objects removed from my eye.    And is that because the closest primary care physician was 100 miles away even tho we had lots of local doctors

It depends on where you live.  the closer you are to an area with a large active duty presence the more Doctors are signed up.

But you know that
