I never said all men are binge drinking macho morons but for some odd reason more guys seem to indulge in that

Presumably in the spirit of gender equality, the gap is narrowing. [:D]

Binge drinking among women has almost doubled since 1998, in a rapid narrowing of an alcohol gender gap that persisted for generations, research today from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation shows. ~Guardian

British teenagers are among the worst binge drinkers in Europe, with girls more likely to get drunk than boys, claim researchers. ~MailOnline

It's my personal experience that women are only recently coming out of the closet about their drinking. It's normal for a man to have a drinking problem - it's an issue that needs to be dealt with but it's ok. It can even be cute and funny. Whereas a woman who has a drinking problem is a shameful creature - causing some women to go to great pains to hide their drinking and any drinking issues they may have.

It is my personal belief that a lot more women binge drink and have drinking problems than we know about simply because of this attitude of "good women don't do this". But this is solely drawn from my personal experience and no studies.

I remember when I got AOL (my first experience with chat and stuff) and I had the distinctive impression that the installation disk supplied all men with a magic ruler that said 9" and all women with a magic mirror that said "Top Model"

That was good!  [sm=rofl.gif]
I'll tell you a little secret.  I'm afraid it only works on this side of the pond.
One of the best ways to really see if a guy 'measures up' is to get a comparison shot with a dollar bill.  For US currency, the dollar bill is exactly six inches in length.  If it can't be done, they guy either wasn't endowed or he's just that damn broke.

Oh man, I am sooooo glad I swallowed my pepsi before I saw both of these posts....scared the cats as it was when I laughed!

ETA and thank heavens you don't ever stereotype about Wales... Not that I lived there but I did, I found the people very friendly and helpful, you did not, I leave it to you to draw conclusions...

There are all sorts of conclusions one can draw from that statement, yes.

But I don't think I'll bother enumerating them.

The mean bigotries of English yobs

Perhaps a sense of inferiority animates English people in their prejudice, as they compare this inextinguishable national spirit with their own? Perhaps they are beginning to understand why it is instantly advantageous to tell foreigners that you are not English, but Welsh? And perhaps the Welsh themselves should accept the infantile abuse of stand-up comics and loveless intellectuals with a shrug of the shoulders and an indulgent smile, in a proper exertion of boneddigrwydd — which is to say, more or less, noblesse oblige.

Stevie hon, PLEASE tell me you don't believe 1 is a prime number....[:D]

Anyone who does can get the HELL out of my thread!

*cough*

All right, little bunny, if you want a full out brawl over mathematics, I suggest we step outside to the Politics and Religion forum.

I see how people could get thrown out of chat for unseemly activities over math.

BTW, Wikipedia gives a definition of prime number that fits 1 perfectly, and then states offhand that 1 is by definition not a prime - no explanation.  Did you just hack Wiki to insert that sentence?

I don't see that around me at all, I know I have a lower capacity for drinking than a man, simply by size and body weight, booze is full of empty calories and really bad for the skin, I think women are possibly more prone to indulge in prescription drugs because it's easier and more discrete to slip a pill than to drink and reek of booze...

I guess women are a bit more vain than guys and everybody looks like s... with a hangover or red broken veins.

There's a slightly more up-to-date NHS study by a unit in London but I can't lay my hands on it ATM.

In short: men still "ahead" in the binge drinking stakes, but women are closing the gap fast.

It's a component of the young that they're less concerned about "reeking of booze" or getting "bad skin" than they probably will be when they're a bit older. Assuming of course that many of them get much older; the numbers injuring themselves and others is increasing steadily too.

Same goes for smoking; overall numbers dropping (obviously), but the single fastest growing group (of those taking it up) are teenage girls.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Just curious about Freedom Of Speech On this site (12/19/2010 2:05:07 PM)

I got my own theory about women taking up smoking more, with the whole "outside" smoking, people go out and there is a lot of flirtation going on, women don't want to hang around and be seen as just hanging with the blokes, so the smoking gives them an excuse. Also with the amazing prices for tobacco products it has become some sort of status symbol...

As for teenagers, I don't really tend to hang out with teens all that much, but women in their 20's and 30's and upwards tend to be quite aware of the effect booze has on their looks, since most of the people I know are professionals, none of them can afford to show up with bags under their eyes at work, female skin is much thinner so we have to take a bit more care.

The increase in young girls smoking pre-dates the smoking ban (their take-up rates have been ahead of boys for over a decade), so that theory doesn't hold water.

One more sensible theory I heard was that there's been an increase in single female parents, and that girls are more likely to ape their mother's behaviour than boys are their father's, therefore if there are 2 children of the same age, one female, one male, and mum smokes, the girls are more likely to follow mum into it.

Oh and the tobacco companies are now targeting girls much more than once they were, which may well be a factor.

It would be interesting to see a study that also gives the background of those groups, don't start me on a rant about teenage moms in velour track suits, pushing a pram and smoking...

I wonder if when you hide someone, you don't even see when they're quoted. [:D]
