You're not the first person to notice this, OP.  I think there's been a thread or two on the subject before.  It doesn't come up often, but I have every reason to believe you're not the only one who has noticed.

I don't know where it comes from or what it might mean to them.  At the same time, I would have to say that My impression of it would be a lack of maturity.  Which, I'm sure, My opinion wouldn't mean much to those who choose that particular shot.  I'm not exactly their target audience.

I'd be in firm agreement with some of the other responders here.  Good screening tool.  If a photo on a person's profile strikes Me as a first impression of someone that I wouldn't want to talk to, I take a proactive stance of blocking the person and hiding the profile so I don't see it again.  Yes, they might be a really nice person and all of that but I don't have much interest in those who make such a bad first impression.

I think I know the type of profile that inspired this question.
It's not so much that flipping the bird in a picture will give you any idea as to what the person is like.
It's the rest of the profile, the profile that he's talking about. They're usually around 20 years old, all the pictures look like profesional model pictures and they all want to be spoiled.
I assume none of those are real, and the person behind it is just looking for a quick buck for exchanging a few e-mails.

I've seen the odd profile that did it and was cool, but they more or less were making fun of those who try to appear hard and tough, a bit like a parody...

But in general, it seems the idea of teenagers asking for money...

I've been noticing this a lot lately myself. It doesn't bother me, but what I also noticed is that a profile where a young, beautiful woman is flipping the bird almost ALWAYS equates to one where she's also looking for money as well. It's gotten so obvious lately that whenever I see one of those profiles, I just chuckle to myself and realize that it's some bottom feeder trying to separate some guy from his money. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if most of these profiles are actually some guy with access to a bunch of pictures of girls holding up their middle fingers so that he can milk money out of clueless wannabe submissives.

Now, having said that, that doesn't mean EVERY attractive woman who flips the bird in her profile is one of these bottom feeders. I've just noticed that a LOT tend to be exactly that.

But it's not a big deal. I just move onto the next profile like anyone else would do.
