However, a good rule of thumb for telling a dominatrix apart from a dominant female is that dominatrixes are usually still dressed submissively, to please the men they wish to entice into a sexual relationship. Whereas the other women, they are not looking for the same things in a man, and, therefore they get to wear comfortable shoes.

To go along with what everybody has been saying thus far in regards to this statement: "Are you joking?"

Dominatrixes are often not really Mistresses, though, and vice versa.. Because a dominatrix is a female that is sexually dominant to her partner. She may be completely submissive in all other aspects of their life, or there may be no other aspects of their life, together.

Uh, where is this coming from?  There may be some legitimate etymological evidence suggesting that the term was originally used to describe a professional dominant-for-hire, but there is absolutely no historical or linguistic justification for a sexual/nonsexual division.

Also, when I own a hot stud, I use him for what he's good for.  I own two of them.  :)  I've been known to refer to them both as "Captain Studly Hungwell von Sexypants", depending on which I think will be embarrassed more by being the titleholder.   Their reactions are priceless.  ;)    So yes, I'm sexually dominant to my partners.  I mean, duuh, I'm the dominant and I enjoy sex, like most other normal healthy adult women.  Who else am I gonna have it with?  Random strangers?

You have a point; the tyranny of stereotypical femdom that imposes a certain kind of dress on women before they are viewed as dominant is some seriously fucked up memeage.  I fuckin' hate it myself, and I wear comfy gym clothes at home when I bother with clothes at all.  I don't think I even own any shoes with heels, though I do like my black leather boots which are quite comfortable and practical.  My idea of a fetish wardrobe is black leather SCA swordfighting garb that I can actually fight in.  But not all women feel the same way that you and I do; for some, dressing to emphasize their sexual power and magnetism is what makes them feel dominant on the inside.  They enjoy feeling confident and sexy in the clothing they prefer.  If you would politically support a transgendered person in their desire to wear attractive female clothes, why would you not support a genetic female who has the same desires?

It's okay to enjoy raising your partner's sexual energy with props and costumes, whether you are male or female and whether your partner is male or female.  I don't think anyone should feel compelled to do it, nor do I think it's okay to snipe at people who enjoy this activity.  Live and let live, and respect the choices of others.  Not everyone is doing it for the wrong reasons.

Mistress can also mean "kept woman", the "little woman on the side", or a concubine, which is why it's not personally my favorite term to use.

But you also don't go off and label everybody who doesn't think Birkenstocks should be worn at all times as automatically submissive.

I couldn't care less what anybody likes to wear, but if anybody decides that somebody who likes to wear heels is submissive and does it only to please men, I tend to have a look at the profile, and personally I think letting yourself go "because you're dominant" is not a very dominant trait at all.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say that the nasty, trashy, plastic, Croc things are more likely to be the case.

The Mistress takes the scourge from your hand and corrects you with it.

The Domme will take the scourge out of your ass and correct you with it.

They are often used interchangeably, and, in some languages, Domme simply means the female version of Dom, which is short for dominant.

A Mistress does not have to be dominant. She can have a Master, or husband who is the manly man type, or whatever. Mistress literally means the female head of the household or owner of the slaves. She's the female in charge. It doesn't matter if slaves are there, or subs, or she is a slave to someone, she is still the top female of the house.

However, when most people choose to call themselves Mistress, in this day and age, it is to point out that they are dominant in some manner. And, this is where it gets hinky, because a lot of them are really dominatrixes.

Dominatrixes are often not really Mistresses, though, and vice versa.. Because a dominatrix is a female that is sexually dominant to her partner. She may be completely submissive in all other aspects of their life, or there may be no other aspects of their life, together.

A woman can be both, of course.

Oh what rubbish!

Mistress would be a semantic for someone you respect and socially give some power exchange to.

Domme comes from another word..
Domina : someone paid to spank or deliver a S/M service to a paying customer in a brothel pro-domina type capacity.
but the word sometimes can be used as a semantic for a domme who does not have a power exchange type agreement with you in which case she is not your Mistress.. but a Domme in your circle of friends.

again its wording.. like asking for a soda in different parts of the USA..
Coke, Dr.Pepper, Mr.Pibb, Pop,Pepsi, Soda, its the same thing but if you ask for a soda in ohio they will give you a Ice Cream.

Not to quibble, but ....

Domina \Dom"i*na\, n. [L., lady. See {Dame}.] (O. Eng. Law) Lady; a lady; -- a title formerly given to noble ladies who held a barony in their own right. --Burrill. Dominance

Go ahead and quibble :) When you are right, you are right!

Interestingly the word Dominatrix did not appear until the late 60's. The OED (Oxford English Dictionary) has the first use in 1967 while Webster's has the first use as 1971. Mistress dates back to the 14th century. Domina I believe also dates back to the 15th century latin. But I have not been able to find specifics as to when Domina was first officialy used.

You know if you don't know the difference between a dungeon and a brothel, you might want to stick to sodas...

What I don't understand is how and why 'mistress' came to be used to refer to a man's extra-marital girlfriend.  Odd.
