dont wear anything tight until the piercings are healed.  Ideally, no panties, and loose fitting slacks...

Also, you'll want to avoid "immersion" activities -- things like sitting in a bathtub or swimming. Stick to showers and mild soaps for cleansing.

You'll want to pick up a peri bottle (check maternity supplies) or some other kind of convenient squirting bottle for washing the area after using the bathroom. It will help the healing process and prevent infection.

Remember to wipe from front to back, and don't sweep bacteria from the back into the pierced area.

Also, you won't be able to play with or handle the rings (including oral sex) until they're healed, and any sex you have will have to be with a condom, and you'll need to cleanse right after, since sexual fluids (either yours or your partners) will aggravate the healing tissue. Healing takes anywhere from 8-16 weeks.

You may want to pick up a 'donut' to sit on (you know -- that thing that folks with hemorrhoids sit on) if you sit a lot (like an office job where you're in a chair for a full day at a time) to prevent excess pressure and reduction of blood supply to the area (which can slow healing).

Also, outer labia piercings are one of the most often rejected piercings (I think eyebrows are rejected more often, but not by much), so that's something to think about as well. It seems that the amount of time we spend sitting increases the risk of rejection of the piercing and slows healing... so those are all things to consider before getting this piercing done.

Besides what’s already been said I would advise as follows a few other things.
Take vitamins for a few weeks before and until the piercing has heeled.
Keep in mind that fine gauge jewelry migrates far more than a bigger gauge, as does captive bead rings. Expect a little migration because all jewelry has to find a comfortable place to park but if it starts to get sore without infection, it may be on its way to rejecting itself.
Don’t rotate your jewelry, in fact don’t touch your jewelry during the heeling process, apart from when your cleaning the pierced area. If you do start to get an infection then you will need to rotate the jewelry whilst irrigating the piercing but don’t be tempted to remove the jewelry. If in doubt contact your piercer

This isn't specific to piercings, but thinking of cleanliness I once had an operation that involved wearing a knee to under breast compression garment for 24/7 with just a slit to pee through. A lot of people would apparently suffer from infections in cuts around that area (thighs). The key for me was a shewee - if you need to be able to direct your pee away from something it's very useful, and you can use them sitting on the loo like normal. You might find it useful.

This is good advice for a body piercing, but not a genital one. She'll have to wear panties (and probably a pad too for bleeding the first few days). Not wearing panties can introduce germs to the piercing, it must stay covered.

I'm in the market for a genital piercing as well, and picked up this book: I can't recommend it enough! It answered all my questions, and even ones I didn't know I had. http://www.amazon.com/Piercing-Bible-Definitive-Guide-Safe/dp/1580911935/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1293389232&sr=8-1

With the piercing it will be different, her own urine will help her to to heal even quicker, from somebody who does piercings for a living I heard that a lot of infections do happen because people over-sterilize, you should follow the advise of the piercer and not clean it more often as this can stop the healing process and make infections more likely.

From personal experience, I only have one body piercing apart from my ears (worth in the long run but getting it had me walk like John Wayne for a couple of days), I was talking to a lot of piercers until I felt comfortable enough and also made sure that the place was spotless clean. My "trick" was to ask if I could use their bathroom, I figured if that isn't spotless clean then I won't trust them with their equipment or punching holes into me. You have to find somebody you are comfy with and trust enough. I never had a problem with mine, but I followed their advise to the letter, also they recommended that I rather do it in a warm season, lots of clothes in the colder season tend to cause unwanted friction on the piercing and also make you sweat, you should also only wear undies from natural fiber until it's completely healed up.

Take your time shopping for a good piercer.  Get references and make sure they are licensed. (most of the states where I lived, licensed piercing parlors--which means they adhere to certain hygiene standards--it does not "certify" that the piercers are competent)

Ask to see the premises before you go and use a critical eye.  Does the place look clean?  Is it organized?  Consider that what you are getting amounts to a medical procedure, so when you look around, ask yourself: Does this look like someplace I would want a procedure done?

Ask about their sterilization/autoclave techniques. Meet the piercer ahead of time, ask questions and if you don't feel comfortable, ask to meet a different piercer.  Follow ALL aftercare instructions, to the letter!

Here's an article you might like:
http://piercingbible.com/sites/all/files/images/angel/Curve.pdf

My roommate was a piercer, my former girlfriend worked for PFIQ/manufacturing, and pretty much all of my friends had extensive piercings.  They always said that the customers who returned unhappy, were always ones who didn't follow their instructions.

enjoy and congratulations-

Something not often mentioned is the follow-up pain, in addition to the immediate pain.

As a piercer and someone who has had outer labia piercing I must warn you that you may be in pain for a couple weeks, due to swelling. The pain when piercing is sharp and intense, then it seems to go away. Then, for some and to varying extents (based on placement, gauge, and individual healing rates), the labia swell and ache for days to weeks. Personally, I was pierced at a larger gauge and was stuck with ice packs on my groin for two weeks of misery. You may have little to no problem or you could be out of commission for a good while, be prepared for anything.

Ideally no sexual contact for a minimum of 8 weeks. This is not just due to fluids, which could be avoided with condoms, it is that plus the fact that unnecessary pulling and rubbing of the piercing could tear the inner tissue and delay healing and/or lead to infection.

Do not touch it yourself except when cleaning it. Do not rotate or slide the jewelry when cleaning.

Be sure to eat something befor going to get pierced and have some juice or a snack with you to have immediately afterward.

Shop piercers to find the best in your area - or travel, if needed.
