Hello All,
I am doing some research on homebased business and would like to hear about others trials and errors and what others have found successful in their areas. I know so many of us do not want to go into an office anymore and would rather work for ourselves. I personally have been bouncing back and forth in my head between lifestyle based or just a site and items geared for women. Master is one hundred precent supportative on the idea but it is something I will have to do on my own to make successful. Any ideas, suggestions would be so appreciated. Im crafty, sew,paint, a horticulture major and master gardener, I am currently taking classes in graphic art and web publishing, so im like what can I do and include all my talents? Confused now? So am i

That is so exciting!! Nowadays with the internet you can do so much from home. Did you look into Ebay? I personally know someone who makes a great living selling antiques on Ebay. I have bought plants from people who sell them on Ebay. Or, you could get your wares together and hit the flea markets. Another person I know just sells crafts at Christmas time and makes $30k per year. There are so many possibilities.

As a finance professional, I would say you need to be careful to account for sales tax collected in your state. Also, you may need to get an occupational license through your county government.

thank you for the words of encouragement and some ideas. I know of ebay but recently have heard of so many being taken advatange of through them with their charges and over charges. Im sure there are other sites around and will just start working towards the goal of making something happen and to help create a more added income for Master and myself. Being now 45 I realize I want more then I have and want something Master and I can call ours. We both came from divorces where our other partners ruined our credit and we are working hard on reestablishing it.

I've bought and sold many items on Ebay and never had a problem. As a matter of fact, they have a good watchdog area if you have problems. Anyway, I would keep your dream in mind, especially with a credit problem. Homebased businesses are the way to go. There are lots of books on them but the key is to love what you do and not do it for the money. I say "you go girl!"

Herbalife is a reputable homebased business. I've used the product for 16 years, and watched a friend of mine grow, and grow, and grow with the company.

We have had our own home based software business for about 30 years now. Be sure to check out local and state licenses needed, tax reporting requirements--local, state and federal, and insurance needs (homeowners often doesn't cover business assets and liability). You will need to keep very good records of expenditures, and try not to mix personal and business expenses, as that is an accounting nightmare. Also if you want a tax deduction for home office be sure you read the requirements carefully. We love the flexible hours, commuting upstairs, and being able to play a lot of golf and travel when we want to. However the first several years Hubby worked extremely long hours. A lot depends if you need to make a living off your business or if it is for supplemental income. For us it was advantageous to incorporate.

Hi,

I have some experience with ebay. (I've been selling for three plus years.) It's a fun hobby, and satisfies my hippie-commune needs.

First, there's nothing wrong with getting your feet wet with trial auctioning before you commit, or spend much money. Try selling something you already have. Spend time looking at the vast ebay universe to get ideas.

Second, I noticed you are a master gardener. I'll give you some examples of profitable ebay businesses--just involving SEEDS!

"Hollyhock seeds from 122 yr old farm." This product (50 seeds) is sold about once a week, and nets the seller more than $7.00! Lots of bids. Heirloom seeds are often good bets.

On the opposite side of the coin: daylily seeds from specific named crosses. (more than $5.00 for 10 seeds) Ever dreamed of being a hybridizer?

I also noticed you are crafty, so I'll give you an example of a happy sewing seller. There is one lady who sells home-sewn patchwork hippie skirts. The bids reach upwards of $40.00. As a sewer myself, I know these skirts don't take long to make, but you have to have taste, I suppose.

Anyway, those are a few ideas I've recently considered. The best thing would be to try to sell something that takes no expensive overhead/startup, at least at first. Also imitate other sellers (sell what sells). Once you are more confident, then you can create your own special product.

I wish to say Thank You again for each of the suggestions I recieved on this thread. A bit of a background on my present job is I work in a call center, a floor analyst who handles irrate callers( lots) and helps the others on the floor with questions they can not answer and resolving issues. It has become very stressful and is the reason behind wanting more then I have and to do something I enjoy as an income. Again thank You for your ideas,suggestions and information from those who work from home. I know of a few here who do and so many refuse to talk of their success almost as if they are affraid someone else will come along and do it better.
