I have a feeling this story was "played up" a bit by the media for dramatic effect. It sounds to me that the man that's the subject of story has a gas fireplace and that the pilot light was lit while he was trying to clean it - which is an honest mistake, he forgot to put out the pilot before using an aerosol cleaner. When the aerosol got to the pilot light - whoof, big fireball (which is what the story describes). I don't think the fireplace was actively burning while he was trying to clean it - it wouldn't have been a "big fireball" in that case, as the flames would have lit the moment he sprayed the can. It still isn't very bright, but my guess is that is isn't as much of a Darwin award as the media played it up to be.
