Unfortunately, drugs are almost as charged a topic as abortion. Even if something is wildly beneficial, if it enrages too many people with political clout, it ain't gonna happen.
In other words, legalization needs a good sales job. Even with the obvious
1. It reduces the demands on cops and courts' time and lets them focus on other things.
2. It kills a major revenue source for organized crime.
3. It lowers the cost of drugs and thus removes a driver for ID theft, burglary, and other crimes.
4. It's an easy revenue source when taxes are added,
politicians are still terrified to be labeled "soft on crime". That'd be as unfashionable as claiming that the whole TSA needs to be cut back as it's hassling travelers and not really enhancing security - any pol suggesting that would be out next election.
