What is it with you Americans and guns?Why do you need them? I know it's in your constitution as a right to hold a gun,but why in this day do people insist on upholding a right that was relevant in 1780 but does not seem relevant today.It does seem to me that you have an awful lot of terrible gun incidents....

MrKicia -> RE: GUNS (12/29/2010 4:58:13 PM)

Well Susan?  Is ignorance really bliss?  Inquiring minds need to know.

TribeTziyon -> RE: GUNS (12/29/2010 5:08:23 PM)

We like to shoot stuff.

Being a Western gal, it is in my blood.

DesFIP -> RE: GUNS (12/29/2010 5:10:26 PM)

Why did you post this here, instead of in politics where I have no doubt it shortly will be moved to.

I don't have a gun, but if the bear starts coming up to the house again, I am going to get a shotgun. Since last time the dog scared him off but now I'm without a pup.

Hippiekinkster -> RE: GUNS (12/29/2010 5:16:37 PM)

Dildos are too difficult to operate for many Americans.

Not many bears in Atlanta.

Try being an attractive woman that has a few bucks and is alone alone because your man travels for business. Now, I don't intend to be the intruders next victim but I am pretty sure with 30 plus years of shooting skill, I will be his last attempted victmi.

Oh and yes, I have drawn my gun(s) more than once, and trust me, even the threat of that worked. A lecture of my own handguns being used against me I don't need, believe that.

Oh and take a look at my latest little beauty, it's a Smith and Wesson .357 revolver but with 8 cylinders and custom laser grips. It was a birthday gift from my man, who knows he doesn't need to worry about me when he is gone for a night or two on business. He always says he worries more for the poor intruder.

This isn't the UK OP, the bad guys all have guns here, what would you do if you were me? I carry large sums of cash for business on an almost daily basis, it's a small town, people know that, I live in a very large house in a somewhat isolated setting, so when I come in sometimes down a deserted road to my house at 9 or 10 at night and no man there, the first thing I do is trigger the motion sensor lights them I grab whatever pistol I am carrying. Sure makes walking to the house a lot less hair raising.

Oh, and it's pretty and shiny too [;)].

This might help..oops!

Because they're fun to shoot.

Who decides when a right is no longer relevant? It wouldn't be much of a "right" if it was subject to such arbitrary reclassification.

We do. Crass as it may sound, that's just one of the pitfalls of living here. Live in the States and you run a higher risk of getting shot than in most other countries. That's just a choice we all make.

pahunkboy -> RE: GUNS (12/29/2010 5:55:04 PM)

I almost fell in the bath tub too.

The same reason you wear that dress....to cover our asses.

DarkSteven -> RE: GUNS (12/29/2010 6:09:50 PM)

Hi, Susan.I do get the feeling that a lot of Europeans feel as you do.  Let me give you a few answers.

1. Unfortunately, foreigners such as yourself get a vision of an America that is a bloody 24/7 riot.  We do in fact have occasional incidents but they are overblown.  I am 54 years old for example and cannot remember the last time I saw a gun, save on a cop or security guard.
2. The original concept of the right to bear arms is that the government's power over its citizens is limited. There are times that that's a wonderful thing.
3. Aynne mentioned some self protection ideas.  There are also those that like to hunt.  Another legit use of guns.
4. Politically speaking, we have the National "Rifle" Association here.  It's a misnomer because it actually is pro-gun, not just pro-rifle.  Its lobbying power is legendary and no GOP lawmaker would dare cross them, and Dems are leery of crossing them as well.

The population that I honestly wish wouldn't have guns, actually would not disarm simply if ownership became illegal....

DamnPickyDomme -> RE: GUNS (12/29/2010 6:12:12 PM)

because i have a former inlaw in prison for murder who is eligible for parole in three years who has said he will kill the entire family if he ever gets out of prison. it's not likely he'll get out, but given the screwed up system called corrections, you never know. i'll keep my gun loaded and ready thank you.

pahunkboy -> RE: GUNS (12/29/2010 6:13:38 PM)

I think it is maybe 25 years since I seen a real gun in person.   (other then a cop)

It is not like in the movies.  I live in a red neck area.  People have guns- like every house- but  you would only see one if you break in.

It just is not an every day thing like in the movies.

I guess it depends on what you call a 'need'.

quote:

"By calling attention to 'a well regulated militia,' 'the security of the nation,' and the right of each citizen 'to keep and bear arms,' our founding fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy... The Second Amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic civilian-military relationships in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of his country. For that reason I believe the Second Amendment will always be important."
-John F. Kennedy

"Certainly one of the chief guarantees of freedom under any government, no matter how popular and respected, is the right of citizens to keep and bear arms. ... the right of citizens to bear arms is just one more guarantee against arbitrary government, and one more safeguard against a tyranny which now appears remote in America, but which historically has proved to be always possible- Sen. Hubert Humphrey

and just to keep things interesting......

"Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the act of depriving a whole nation of arms, as the blackest."
- Mahatma Gandhi

quote:

It does seem to me that you have an awful lot of terribleĀ gun incidents....

"In a perfect world, you wouldn't need guns. This is not a perfect world."
- Sheriff Ben Johnson, Volusia County, Florida

It is as nothing compared to their road kill. More USA people died from vehicle accidents than from being shot in the Vietnam war during the same period, if I recall correctly.

Not to worry if you are in New York.  They still have not plowed the roads there.
