Reading this thread, I'm really amazed at how many men don't even know how to cook. What the heck do these guys eat? I moved out of my parents' house shortly after I turned 17, and thought I was in heaven because I could eat pizza, TV dinners, and pot pies every night. It took about 3 weeks before I'd had a lifetime's worth of that crap, and I motored straight over to my parents' house to raid my mother's recipe book. Haven't looked back since. I can't imagine how boring life would be if I didn't cook.

One of the nice things about the increase in interest in good cooking in the UK in the last few years has been that many more men (and, indeed, women too) are now interested in cooking and eating quality meals. Which is not to say that millions of people don't still eat junk, because millions do, but the number of people who can now prepare tasty, nutritious meals is on the up.

I have, many times, taught friends to cook; most of those were men, although there were several girls in the mix too. One mate of mine was so hopeless that he was incapable of doing anything beyond toast (not even a boiled egg, would you believe). He ended up eating a lot of toast :) In the early days it was guys who were leaving home for the first time. Now it's mates who have divorced after years of their spouse doing the cooking, and have realised that those nice meals didn't just magically appear on the table. BTW the "toast-eater" is now an accomplished cook, although he confesses it's not something that comes naturally to him.

When I'm living with someone, I usually do all the cooking, because I'm better at it than most of the women I've been with. My last ex used to do a lot of the cooking because she liked the traditional dishes she grew up with in Russia and Germany, and I couldn't make them as well as she could. But overall, my cooking was still better than hers, so unless she had a hankering for borscht or sauerbraten or whatever, she mostly preferred to let me do the cooking.

I did date someone about 15 years ago who was a really good cook, and we would take turns trying to outcook each other. We'd attack each other every weekend with elaborate gourmet meals, her one Saturday night and me the next. She finally gave up when I clobbered her with lobster thermidor and baked alaska. After that, she pretty much let me do the cooking.

lol. I'm not quite so competitive, but I have to admit I don't generally like people cooking for me. I would much rather prepare meals for them. It’s that control-freak thing again, I think, if I'm honest. I like things just so, and thus I tend to do most of it myself.

Maybe- but if I am going to cook a dinner for someone-  and they only  pick at half a salad- that is not too fun.

yeah but pick at half a salad has nothing to do with thick or thin...Whilst I eat most vegetables I don't eat cucumber, sweetcorn and don't eat raw carrots (even when I like them when they are cooked). So if I am in a restaurant and have that stuff in my salad I will pick them out no matter what size I am.

It can wait. I think I'm coming down with flu :(

My temperature has soared overnight, to the point I could probably fry eggs by placing them on my forehead :(

My ex was a foodie, couldn't cook a damn thing but knew everything about it., wine too His Dad is in the restaurant biz and so he grew up with it...sorta. He damn near had an orgasm when i made him an omelette one morning. i couldn't believe it.

But, still no man to cook for me. [:(]

Methinks a trip to CO is in the near future to have Steven cook for me, though. [:D]

Hillwilliam -> RE: Ladies, how much cooking does it take to impress you? (12/31/2010 7:18:51 AM)

Very good cook here but I cant bake for squat. I'm too much of a freelancer. A recipe is just a suggestion and if you try to bake that way, it can be a disaster.

I started cooking when I was prob no more than 8 or 9.

Anything beyond grilled cheese sandwich is pretty impressive.

pam

I agree.  The male subs who have "cooked" for me were able to make the following:

1.  Toast
2.  Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (this sub made them for himself every day for breakfast and lunch, then visited a drive-through for dinner)
3.  Grilled cheese sandwiches
4.  One had a portable grill he'd bring to my house and grill fish or chicken, then pick up some side salads in the deli at the local market (I actually enjoyed this--simple can be good)
5.  Scrambled eggs
6.  Lean Cuisine dinners in the microwave

One exception was a male sub who owned restaurants and was a fantastic gourmet cook.  The things he would bring to our munches were very impressive.  Unfortunately, he was "high-maintenance" and never had much luck finding partners in the BDSM world.  The last I heard, he was engaged to a vanilla woman.

Fortunately, I enjoy cooking and as long as the other person will clean up after me, I'm perfectly fine with that.

i found that out the hard way, i fail at baking big time.

I'm great at baking....I play with recipes all the time, granted, there is the occasional flop, but for the most part, it's about knowing what your ingredients do in the recipe, what substitutions you can get away with, and a sense of adventure!  I use applesauce to replace the oil/shortening part of recipes, and it changes the texture....makes cookies soft, which is what I prefer.  I make a recipe as stated the first time, but after that, I'm all over the place with it.

Also, for the original toll house cookie recipe, instead of using 2 eggs, try just one and add a little bit of milk to make the batter blendable.  They won't spread outnearly as much so you have a thicker cookie.

I love to play in the kitchen with food.....you never know what you'll get!  I discovered Ken's salad dressing, the Asian Sesame...it's great for marinating chicken and fish in!

On a related note, when my son was home at my parent's house a couple of years ago, he got up one morning and made himself and his fiance french toast....my mom was seriously impressed!  Truth be told, I'm not sure where he learned to cook, but he picked up enough to manage it.  It was pretty good french toast too!  He did breakfast a couple of times for us while he was there.  And the grilled cheese for lunches!

i found that out the hard way, i fail at baking big time.

As did I, to start with. Big time; as a child I'd seen my grandmother (as it turns out, a natural baking expert) just "throw together" pastry (as just one example), without measuring anything, and I assumed I could be equally "avant garde" in my approach. Big mistake. Big, "could use this pie case as Chobham armour" style mistake. I swear I developed a solution for IEDs years ago, if only I could replicate my efforts.

The thing about baking is you can wing it, but you have to wing it from a secure base, as it were.

So be methodical to start with, measure everything, get some simple stuff down pat, then sort of work out from that.

Baking also requires that you really know your oven ... for most dishes, near enough is good enough, but for baking pastries, pies, cakes, sponges and the like you need to know exactly how yours will relate to a given recipe. Same goes for your yeast & other ingredients (right down to the water you use) for baking bread.

But once you've got it, it's great - for some reason people are often more delighted by simple little, nicely baked sweet treats and breads than they are some full-blown dinner party menu you've slaved over (heh) for hours ... the ungrateful bastards [;)]

My New Year's Resolution for 2011 is biscuits; I've never tried them much, outside of brownies and the like, and I'm going to give more difficult biscuits a go. Coz it's fun to try :)

Oh, and preserves are fantastic; give them (savoury and sweet) a go - they're such comforting things to produce, and make great gifts.

No offense, DS; I love the vast majority of your posts. The most important thing that cooking for someone else does is show that person that you care, so that was a nice thing that you did. Besides, I loooooooove pasta and salad. However, being a somewhat advanced cook approaching chef, myself, if someone wanted to impress me with his cooking skills, well, it would take a bit more than spaghetti with meatballs. A nice duck confit followed by a basil and lemon creme brulee would do the trick!
