i've got an odd thing for those houndstooth chef pants, too. i can't help but be curious about what's inside them.

As far as being impressed while enjoying a date? i'm impressed when the food shows a modicum of finesse, not that it's been cooked by them in the first place. A person i'm interested in should be able and willing to at least function in the kitchen, regardless of gender.

i'm impressed if they set out to cook a meal for our date and exceeded that basic goal by cooking something exceptionally good. A poorly made meal won't devalue the date any more or less than a poorly chosen activity and a well made meal is just as impressive as a well chosen activity.

i'm very impressed when it's something i've mentioned wanting to eat, liking in particular and they remembered this random tidbit (i'm always talking about food) or something that takes a bit of skill to properly prepare.

i'm also very impressed when they recover quickly from a poorly made meal. One of the best dates i ever went on started with a burnt frittata going in the trash and the announcement, "Let's go for Chinese, i know a place." Best 72 hours with a person i barely knew.

Once the dating's been done for a while, complaints of "slaving over a hot stove" probably responded to with backrubs or footrubs. Proof the slaving actually happened at some point--potential bj material, for certain. Particularly if they're wearing some of those houndstooth pants.

Awww, shucks... can't remember what kind of apples I used. Granny Smith I think.I'm really digging Gala apples right now. Great taste and the skins aren't tough.

Gala, Cameo, Fuji, Honeycrisp, Ambrosia, Pink Lady, Crispin, Golden Delicious, and Granny Smith are my favorites.

Now, anyway, GT, out in Austell is Patak meats. They make the best sausages in the US, IMO (and I have had the best in Germany in both Munich and Berlin). Their Weisswurst is nearly as good as the Munich Gold Prize winner I had in 2003. A pair of those, poached, my applekraut, a big soft pretzel, and sweet mustard (which I make myself) is heaven for me. Gotta get the sausages fresh; one should be able to suck the sausage out of its skin (the verb in Bavaria is zuzeln). They make the most incredible salamis, too. My faves are the Hungarian, the Russian, and the Hunter's. They probably ship, and they are cheap.

They smoke a really nice Black Forest Ham that I use in my Choucroutte (French for Sauerkraut). I also use Knackwurst, Kielbasa, and a couple other sausages. I simmer the kraut in Riesling with Juniper berries. Really nice.

When we were very low on money and food, I watched my fiance cook a fantastic meal using a can of one dollar soup, a package of ramen noodles, and some random spices we had in the cabinet. We ate like kings that night and nothing he's ever done... before or since... has impressed me as much as that dinner he cooked.

I do this all the time! Really easy to take a chicken roast with some veggies (which is low prep to begin with.. chicken + herbs + veggies + oven for a couple hours with a little basting = delicious)
And then you just strip the chicken and throw all the leftover veggies and broth in and instant YUM

Even better is when I make rice pilaf to go with the chicken roast.. and then throw the rice in the soup... MMMMMMM

But I am not a man, so I guess my cooking is meaningless :(

I don't cook "to impress"; I cook because I love food, and I love eating well, and I love preparing good food for people I like.

a fair bit i'd say, any one can throw together the simple shit, and hopefully make it tasty or they should be able to, so if they want to impress me, it's gotta be a little bit harder than the simple stuff anyone can do AND be foods I like or would be willing to try if I hadn't had it already.
