[hijack]Just out of curiosity, how many scoops (tablespoons) do you people use to make coffee? I'm just wondering, cuz I use a 1/4 cup measuring cup to make mine and I'm wondering if maybe my coffee is way stronger than everyone elses....[/hijack]

I've always wondered this, too, and every time I ask, I never remember the answer.

I use about 1/4 cup for about an 8 cup pot-full.  1/2 cup for a full pot.  That's when it's pre-ground.  But typically I buy whole beans (no scoop) and eyeball them when I put them in the coffee grinder.

I never did know what to do with those scoops, lol.

I use 3.5 table spoons-  this on a 4 cup cone drip.  Ends up to be 3.5 cups.
I like it strong.  It is just me here- so  the small pot is all I ever use.

I don't even drink the stuff, can't stand it, but love the smell. And for some strange reason I have about 4 or 5 of the scoops here. Now if only I could find them?

From Alton Brown:

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/true-brew-recipe/index.html

For myself I use 1/3 cup of pre-ground "breakfast" blend or other light to medium coffee per coffee pot.  I have a 12 cup coffee pot.

I have a press and an espresso/cappuccino maker, however I never use them.

Normally one tablespoon for a 5 oz cup but I make it weaker for the teen who needs a cup of coffee to move in the mornings.

That is not coffee.   It might be brownish water...

Mine have come with the coffee maker.

How do you figure?

1/4 cup = 3 tbsp + 1 tsp

so...

1/2 cup = 6 tbsp + 2 tsp

1 tsp is 1/6 of an ounce.

The math is not working for me.  Although I might be tired.

i dunno. i thought that 1/2 cup = 8 Tbsp. (From a 1/2 cup cube of butter, that is portioned into 8 Tablespoon portions). 1 Tbsp=3 tsp. So 1/2 cup = 24 Tbsp, and Alton Brown calls for 24 oz of water.

Although, i'm not good at math either...

I don't know.  I have never actually measured out a 1/4 cup with tbsp's and tsp's.  I use a measuring cup.  I wonder if they were supposed to be heaping or something.  Or if it is a weight instead of volume.  Because now that you mention it, that does not make sense with butter.  Or it could be a metric cup to a US tablespoon thing.  Because 1 metric cup equals 16.9 US tablespoons.  Or 17.6 UK Tablespoons.  I think that I like weight better.  I will stick with the scale.

I just fill the little basket in the moka pot, screw the top to the bottom, put it on the stove and voila! Espresso

Or for the cafe au lait, pile a few heaping spoonfuls of the coffee chickory mixture in the glass, poor hot water over, let steep, and press. Mix with heated mild and voila.
