Lordandmaster -> ecological way of dealing with skunks (4/30/2006 11:39:14 PM)

OK, I have a skunk (or family of skunks, I don't know) that set up a nice comfy den right under my porch.

If they were anywhere else on the property, I wouldn't give a fuck, because skunks eat a lot of other pests, but they can't be living right under my porch.  And they're susceptible to too many dangerous diseases to be within striking distance.

So I have to get rid of them.  I don't want to kill them (aside from the fact that I think it's illegal in Pennsylvania), and I want to leave trapping them as a last resort, so I did something that sounds kind of insane.  I bought a canister of granulated fox piss, which is supposed to trick them into thinking that a fox, one of their natural predators, has marked the territory as his own.

And this is my question:

Has anyone ever done anything like this or know of products like this?  Does it work?  Something tells me it's not going to work--somehow I think a skunk MUST know the difference between a real fox's piss and the granulated crap that some suburban homeowner purchased in order to fool him.  But I don't know...

If this doesn't work, I'm going to have to trap the fuckers, because bringing in an owl or something to eat them doesn't seem like a practical solution.

They might decide to move more easily if you provide an alternate lodging for them, for example a false 'porch' at some distance. Next you could make life uncomfortable for them, either by the fox piss, by heating the space under your porch, or by dripping water on them continually or by flooding the space under your porch, or perhaps by putting into place several shock wires. That should be sufficient incentive for them to decide to move to the alternative lodging you provided for them.

There's a real good chance that the Fox Piss will work.
The species hasnt lived this long not to know everything they need to about
their enemy.  Hopefully what they sold you was fairly fresh....
I'd suggest a box of Moth Balls also, toss um under there loose.
The smell usually ticks off critters enough to make them move on.
And it will send the flea's packing too.

mistoferin -> RE: ecological way of dealing with skunks (5/1/2006 6:24:30 AM)

Actually, the fox piss should work. I might suggest getting the liquid form though (sold in the hunting section of your local department store). Another thing you could try is ammonia...or moth balls which have already been mentioned. Skunks don't like obnoxious odors...lol....who'd have thought?

mnottertail -> RE: ecological way of dealing with skunks (5/1/2006 6:36:12 AM)

Skunks are related to bears and pigs, Lam... The fox piss should work.  Additionally you can get a couple of those Halogen construction lamps or something on that order and keep them shining under the porch for awhile, and do a better job of sealing it after they leave. (They ain't very hep to light, being rather nocturnal.)

Soak a rag in ammonia and put it next to them...

Lordandmaster -> RE: ecological way of dealing with skunks (5/1/2006 9:09:14 AM)

Well, we're all related to bears and pigs...  But seriously, I thought skunks were related to weasels.  That's why they're protected--their fur.

Anyway, I'm really grateful to everyone for their replies.  I'll keep you posted.  (Maybe I can use the leftover fox piss on my neighbor?)

LAM, the fox piss is a good method to try.  And if that does not work,  is your home situated within city limits or county?  If you are within the limits of a city, most have an animal control service.  In rural areas, these kinds of problems are frequently handled by the local county sheriffs.  You can also check Online or in your local phone book for wildlife rescue organizations or the biology department at the nearest college. You may also have a local office for the Fish and Game Dept.  That way someone else can trap the little stinkers and set them free in a place where there are fewer people.

In the meantime, be sure to keep your trash containers sealed and move any
pet food inside the house, and keep several cans of tomatoe juice in the pantry,
just in case.

Good luck,

I had a skunk that CONSTANTLY came by my front yard,  digging for grubs,  and nearly always sprayed my A/C unit!

I didn't want to shoot it for myriad reasons,  and I didn't want to trap it,  I just wanted it to go away.

A friend suggested red pepper,  the kind you buy in the grocer's in a jar,  like for pizza and such.  I bought a large jar, sprinkled it all around the yard,  it got a snoot full and never came back.

MistressDREAD -> RE: ecological way of dealing with skunks (5/2/2006 1:20:27 PM)

LMBAO,
I cant beleive that You Lord and I have had to deal with the same issue.......(I also had a nice lill family of 8 skunks under a work trailer that had to be removed in order to work daily.)..... But anyhow DONT tempt to wash em away with the water hose. It will only leave Your home inhabitable for weeks when they spray the bottom of Your floors scared and its impossible to get underthere to tomato wash the girth. Do   put a couple of flood lights under the house to make it light in the day and night so that they will leave out to find a more suitble * dark place * to reside. If the babies are allready born the mother might not move them till they will move themselfs even if smelling the piss. Try not to do anything to them that would scare them as that will kill you and everything with in a two mile circle. It might take a week or so and will rise that electric bill with the lights but well worth it and no lingering smell to contend with. If there is no dark space under the place and its all lighted the skunk family will move and find a new keep unless the babies are to young then it will take a week or two. making a place for them to live and putting down some raw eggs in shell and some honey poured over them will attract them to the new shelter and away from where you have them now. Be sure you dont have a food pantry there in the area thats keeping them under where they are now. Garbage cans, throwing out food for animals to eat and what not, even empty beer/soda bottles, cans laying on the ground will attract a hungry skunk who likes such sweet things. JMO

Wulfchyld -> RE: ecological way of dealing with skunks (5/2/2006 1:34:02 PM)

If the above options fail…

Animal control will live trap them then take them out and drown them. If you want to keep them alive, live trap them yourself. Go out into the wilderness and find a cozy little place to put them. If you leave a little food for them there, and make sure water is close, they will stay where you take them. Once in the trap, cover it so they can’t see out and you wont get sprayed. You may have to trap mom first, and then the babies after. Generally the babies will stay put till mom says its okay. However, as with all kids, when mom doesn’t come back after some time they will come looking for her. Bacon is a good lure; it is aromatic and yummy for skunks. Eggs are also tempting for skunks, the like them in the shell and if you cook them hey will ask for coffee and a smoke afterwards.
 Best of luck

LAM, it is very likely that you have a female with babies under your porch
turns out May is birthing time.

I am very sorry to hear that is the practice in your area, Loki.  Is this method common in other states or counties?  In this area the method is catch and release.
