Yea he actually got 2 spots in Davids top ten list last night...

Top Ten Things Overheard During The Republicans' First Day In Charge Of The House
10."Mr. Boehner, please stop crying" 9."How do we blame this dead bird thing on Obama?" 8."I think he was just sworn in on a copy of Snooki's new book" 7."Beer me!" 6."Alright, you've had six hours, is the economy fixed?" 5."Speaker Boehner, please stop blowing your nose" 4."When is vacation?" 3."No, Senator McCain, Woodrow Wilson doesn't work here anymore" 2."When do we get to have sex with the pages?" 1."How soon can we go back to invading countries for oil?"

Now, I noticed that David pronounces his name "bay-ner". I remember a while back some republican calling him that and people claimed that it was because he was a republican and so sexually repressed that he couldn't say the word boner, so what is Davids excuse?

Stupidity? That's always a good excuse in politics. Just look at Boris Johnson...

It is correctly pronounced BAY-NER. The only people who pronounce it boner are just making an attempt to be funny...

Actually ther usual pronunciation of his family name is closer to boner. The name is German and involves sounds English doesn't have. The Congressman chooses to pronounce his last name as BAY-ner but that is simply his decision it isn't based on good English nor on German.

Can you blame him? Can you imagine the hell he went through in Junior High School? I'd tell everybody that it was pronounced "bay-ner" too. If Bruce Cockburn can pronounce his name as "co-burn" I think we can give pass to Boehner.

If he has that much of a problem with his surname, how much would it cost him to get it changed?

I'm not blaming him. I'd likely change the pronunciation too.

Why should he have to?

If he has a problem with it, that'd be a simpler solution than insisting that everybody mispronounces it.

You're assuming that one pronunciation is "true" and the other is not "true." It's his name, it should be pronounced how he wants it pronounced. He shouldn't have to change his family name because some assholes get some adolescent jollies out of it.

I'm afraid that democracy applies to the pronunciation of names as well, and this lad is at odds with most of Germany. He's quite entitled to feel that everybody else is wrong, but the German pronunciation of that one is not even close to BAY-ner. If he has a chip on his shoulder about that, he'd look like less of a twat if he changed it, but then as a Republican speaker of the house, looking like a twat is probably unlikely to worry him any.

Who cares and why should they?

I don't really. I'm just wondering why Marc feels that somebody changing an embarrassing name is an imposition.

Why shouldn't he? He's the one mispronouncing it.

It is his name, he can say it any way it wants.  He can it spells Smith if he wants.

You do understand that over the years many European names have changed either the way they are spelled or spoken?
