More and more states are becoming aware of how terribly expensive illegal immigration is and are thus looking for ways to remove the main lures that draw illegal immigrants to the US: 1. Jobs 2. "Welfare" benefits 3. "Anchor baby" citizenship Fourteen- 14- states are committed to passing legislation to outlaw the practice, mainly I suppose to encourage illegals to have their babies in other states and thus shift all the medical expenses associated with the births. I think it's a good idea to remove automatic birthright citizenship, and it should instead be based on the citizenship of the parents. The only grey area would be if the parents were legal permanent residents who would soon be citizens when the child is born, or something similar...IMO legal residents of the US who are on the track to citizenship shouldn't have their own immigration process delayed by having to add a child to the application, but at the same time I don't know if their child should automatically be a citizen when they aren't yet.

I see nothing wrong with children being afforded the same citizenship parents have... even when changing it. Im surprised this is even a problem to add them, provided both parents are looking to achieve that goal.

I'm not entirely sure how the process works with changing a single application to an application with dependents. It likely wouldn't be a problem, but it definitely should not. I also think that children of illegal immigrants who were born in the US should be given some sort of legal residency, because I think it's wrong to deport children who had no say in where they were born. But there is a difference between automatic citizenship, and automatic legal residency...a legal resident can't sponsor family members for example. Nobody should be born "illegal" but there are ways to be legal without being a citizen.

I posted a while back about a hotel who was advertising just that thing. They offered rooms for a month at a time so pregnant women from other countries could deliver in the US, affording their children US citizenship and all rights associated with it. Then they would pack up and go home. Its wrong... plain and simple.

I'm fine with it as long as it is made retroactive to 1776. Everyone who doesn't qualify as citizens should be immediately deported. The couple of million of us left will enjoy the quiet and lack of stupid ideas.

Unforunately, i cant agree to that. Once citizenship is conferred, our laws explicitly state the only ways to lose it.

This never ceases to amaze me! Did you know claifornia is not a legitimate state? Why do you think they have to keep letting the mexicans come through? LOL Look up hildago treaty it was never properly executed. All this shit is coming back to haunt us and they want to wipe out the last remnants of peoples ability to secure rights. that what this is really about.

Both my father and my mother's grandparents immigrated to the US legally (so my mother, and her parents, are the children of two legal citizens) How do you suppose most wouldn't be?

Well better get busy kinkroids, if you want to change the terms of citizenship (all historical SCOTUS rulings) ...you will need to amend the US constitution and modify the 14th amend. The 'states' are irrelevant. The legal definition of citizenship is codified by the constitution, changed only by beginning with a vote on such a change, in the US congress.

At the very least it is clear that the prevalent interpretation today is not what was intended by those who wrote the 14th Amendment, debated the 14th Amendment, and voted for ratification of the 14th Amendment. That should count for something.... The states involved want SCOTUS to revisit the issue, after which we can try to craft and pass an Amendment. The practice is unique to the US, and an anachronism we can no longer afford.
