I am not sure why the OP feels he needs proof of why people consider themselves intelligent but I will bite... I feel intelligence falls beyond the measurable. Sure, I have a high IQ from testing as do lots of folks here apparently. I have a college degree, big whoop. I know Phd's who are morons. There is a difference between being book smart and street smart. There is a difference between cerebral intelligence and emotional intelligence. That is where most people fall short, EI. I consider myself intelligent because of the environment I was brought up in; we valued books, art, theater, film, music, discussion, thought and communication as highly as we value our business acumen and success. Not everyone who appreciates art is intelligent and not every successful person is intelligent. Sometimes, it is just dumb luck. I view my intellect as the way I communicate my thoughts, the myriad of interests I have, the way I view the world and my ability to be self aware, expressive, insightful, intuitive and empathetic. It is an individual's perogative to define intelligence in their own manner. I also like to think being open minded and verbal, utilizing the full spectrum of our lexicon, indicates someone of higher intelligence than someone who is not. So, from someone who had joined Mensa once and left after 3 meetings because everyone bored me to tears because they could discuss quantum physics, but could not laugh at a joke or make eye contact with a woman, intelligence is very subjective like all else in life.
