Once again, a terrible crime that could have been averted by challenging Americans' excessively easy access to guns. Once again, the lack of political will to do anything about it. Shameful.

Before anyone tells me he could have done the same with a knife, no, he could not have. He would have been tackled after the first couple of stabs. Much easier to tackle someone with a knife than a gun.

No he couldn't have done this with a knife... but why does everyone against guns use that? Don't you all think of the bombs that can be made from many things? He could have done that with a bomb and he wouldn't have had a hard time figuring out how to make one, with legal substances.

(Don't ask me how... hell if I know how to do it, but I've read that it isn't hard to find out.)

ANYone that thinks, constant words alluding to violent actions do not have an impact of the human conscious at some level, is a fool.

John Lennon was shot by some nut who read "Catcher In The Rye" to many times and wanted to be famous. Just last month several shows aired that highlighted that whole event all over again. President Reagan was shot by some nut wanting to impress Jodie Foster. Painting yesterday's events as some sort of right wing influenced political assassination attempt as this juncture isn't any better than the speech you blame it on. It's irresponsible at best and moronic at worst.

What's irresponsible and foolish is being in denial about the connection between right-wing political rhetoric and this kind of incident. If you spend your time waving guns around while saying that Obama is a foreign Islamic terrorist socialist conspiring with other Democrats to destroy the country, the health care bill will turn the country into a Communist tyranny where government "death panels" kill your grandma, etc. then you shouldn't be surprised when it influences unstable people.

As the investigation moves forward, I'd like to know a bit more about the parents, and the home this kid came out of.

I can appreciate your curiosity, as an academic interest, and as something that bears understanding to further our knowledge of the circumstances that create these people. Given that lots of kids come from shitty homes and don't committ mass murder, there seems likely to be a genetic factor that makes some of them more susceptible than others. But frankly, as far as news and special feature reporting goes, the last thing I want this grandiose little punk to get from this act is fame and a book contract. I personally don't need to know any more about him than I already do. To be totally forgotten and completely ignored is probably his worst nightmare, and I for one would be delighted to see it come true.

Perhaps there are those on the left that would like to find common ground with those on the right. However, ever since Obama was elected, the right has had an all or nothing additude. The whole Teabaggers are getting way out of hand. The very far right fringe of the Republican party has now become the Mainstream actors for the Republican party. This is in no way,the Party of Lincoln.Lincoln would probaly be spinning in his grave right now if he sees what has become of the Republican party.Does the left have its far left weirdos,of course it does. However,Progressives dont embrace these weirdos as their Mainstream leaders. The Teabaggers and those on the right are now the Dominant player in the Republican party. These people are making George Bush 2 out to be some hardcore liberal at this point. If you want common sense minded progressives to meet you half way, then quit with this extremist garbage.

The Moderate Republicans have left the party. They were all mostly voted out by the Teabaggers in the recent elections.Even the "Brain" of the Republican party,Karl Rove could see that.If this is the kind of garbage modern day far right Republican conservatives follow, than I want no part of it.How can you reason with those who want to be the party of no on everything.I thought 2 years ago when Obama became our President, this country was finally moving in the right direction.Well,2 years later and the Teabaggers has been created.I am not saying every Teabaggers are the same. However, this group is clearly a bunch of racist trash, gay bashing, gun carrying, sick demented whack jobs who have helped only flame the spread of hate. Now if you dont agree with them, they come with their shotguns and shovels.Maybe Canada dosent seem so bad after all.I would rather deal with cold weather, than deal with a bunch of irrational nutjobs who are becoming the a part of Mainstream America.I can only imagine what people around the world really feel about America. This is not a civil country as well.America has become a well organized, third world banana republic.Obama has made some progress as our President, but I cant see that lasting too long. The real hate mongers have now shown their true motives.

The usual idiotic and stupid logic and thinking of a Liberal... take the guns away so that only the killers and the criminals have them. In Australia when they took all the guns away the killings and robberies tripled because the theives knew it was an open door policy to rape and kill. The first thing that hitler did was to take away the guns. The reason Sweden was never invaded by Germany is because it was required that everybody have a gun.

If honest people had guns this would never have happened because the shooter would be put down before he could have done anything. Guns protect, bad people kill. Why don't you move to the border towns of Arizona where all the mexicans are killing people and preach no guns no protection... you are nothing more that a IDIOT in the biggest way.

Let's withhold judgment until we know if the little nutcase was a liberal or conservative, shall we?  Thus far it appears that his politics was too whacked to be associated with either party but that hasn't stopped folks on both sides from trying to link the kid with the other side.  As you are doing.

A mentally disturbed person, regardless to what degree they are socially or even physically functional, may be unable to distinguish fact from propaganda. Mix in some irrational snake-handling religious fervor, some good ole South-of-the-border or Muslim fear tactics, add a generous portion of hate for gays and pro-choice progressives, make "liberal" a dirty word and what you end up with are people like Jim Adkisson, who shot up the UU church in Knoxville.

Yes, you can place a significant portion of blame on hate media for this shooting. And while you will hear them denounce the act (Palin tweets, so responsible of her), tomorrow, or the next day, or the next, it will start again. Beck will call for "a pound of flesh", Palin will call for "the removal" of those who are not real uh-mer-cans from our government, Limbaugh will issue some racist blather and O'Reilly will give his simplistic explanations on the proof of his god.

Regardless of political sides, if you're going to call for violence, then you must stand up and take responsibility for your actions when those of weak mind respond to your call.

It's very easy to make a bomb (just ask the underpants bomber) but making one that works might have been a bit more hassle than buying a gun for this tosspot.
Just a thought.

Quite correct. He would have been forced to make a trip to the hardware store and mix some household and gardening chemicals together. Then he could have killed even more people, and faster.

Two words: Try it. But since you want to play this game, he could also have been stopped if someone close enough had been armed.

God, that sounds like some men!  I don't think I will do it because it might pose a challenge and be some work. It is far easier to lay here and let her make me cum than to put some effort into making sure she cums. If there is a will, there is a way.

In a way, you prove my point. I am sure you do not see it that way, but you do. First, did I call gun owners "idiotic" or "stupid" as you did to me? No. Did I state my political offiliation? No. Do you even know if I own a firearm? No. Typical knee jerk reaction from someone brainwashed by the NRA. Congratulations.

Underpants bomber does sound rather impressive in that sense. I'd never thought of the term like that before. Thanks for the laugh. We could do with a few more of those in this thread...

Okay, that took me a few minutes.  In the lower left corner is a list of both youtube channels she subscribed to, and one of them is Loughner's.  I do not know the implications of that.
