The reason Tom Delay is going to prison is because he don't speak no proper 'merican.

He talks like you furreigners who think the 'merican language came from some furreign country.

Prison? Actual prison? I would have thought he would have calls in a few favors and got something lesser. No more politics for him. Just a lobbying job.

When your man DeLay gets to prison, it's not going to be angels he hears singing in the showers.

Oh, and when you saw it on the news earlier? That news theme in the background? That was me on the drums, it totally was.

I'm a professional.

In all fairness,I am not a big fan of Tom DeLay anyways. However, considering Charlie Rangel got off with a slap on the risk, why is Rangel sitting with Delay in their own cell together?

I'm not sure if this is an answer, but Rangel was investigated and reprimanded by the House Ethics Committee, while DeLay's investigation was done by a county jury trial.

The question is of course WHY Rangel's investigation did not extend outside the House.

I think it was mostly because DeLay's actions were clearly illegal and Rangel mostly was guilty of a bunch of violations of House ethics rules. Although I wouldn't be surprised if he was eventually prosecuted for some of it.

DeLay ran afoul of federal laws, while Rangel went afoul of congressional (internal) rules.  The most threatenening aspect of Rangel's issues was the tax evasion charges, but then again, those in congress know there is no law forcing people to pay taxes and the act of paying taxes really is a voluntary process.

Actually there is a law requiring the payment of income taxes for most people and voluntary doesn't mean what you think it means in this case.

As in "I volunteer to pay my share of taxes or I'm goin to jail"

Unless, of course, I'm politically connected with either party.

I'm surprised. I had expected probation. Perhaps the judge was put off by DeLay's statement "Just because someone disagrees with you, it's not enough. They have to bury you, put you in jail", which sure doesn't sound like he even accepts that what he did was illegal, as well as his lawyer's arrogant "He's suffered enough."

The case will be appealed, but I'm not sure on what grounds.

He will be free-on-bail for years while he appeals. It is however nice to see him (and force his wife to) get a real job.

The only 'law' requiring people to pay taxes amounts to who owns the guns.  You see, Rangel is part of the group that owns the IRS guns that are pointed at the ordinary people who pay their 'voluntary' income taxes.

There is no law, "who owns the guns" has become the only "law".

Just as a gauge...what punishment do you think he would receive under UK law?...be truthful please.

If there is a fault in our judicial system it is money talks…as well as political connections.

How about yours?

The case of Jeffrey Archer springs to mind: I think he got five years, and was out in under two. That said, the judiciary had been holding their breath for a second chance to lock him up after it turned out he was guilty as hell over the previous business back in the '80s, so that might have had something to do with his sentencing. A politician with no prior form might not have got as stiff a sentence, though now legal action is finally being taken over a few of the tossers who were taking the piss over their expenses. An example's likely to be made of them as well...
