I'm surprised. I had expected probation. Perhaps the judge was put off by DeLay's statement "Just because someone disagrees with you, it's not enough. They have to bury you, put you in jail", which sure doesn't sound like he even accepts that what he did was illegal, as well as his lawyer's arrogant "He's suffered enough." The case will be appealed, but I'm not sure on what grounds.

I'm surprised he got anything. Seems some judges dont feel that white collar crime is "real crime". I agree with steven. He'll start the appeals process and be out on bail ad nauseum.

I'm actually intrigued; both you and Steven sound (note sound, I don't know) as if you thought this man, despite being guilty of a serious crime, would get a slap, and you presumably thought that because he's got shedloads of cash? I note he also "got" another 5 years for actual money laundering (as opposed to conspiracy to do same, for which he's copped a 3), but was allowed to take 10 years probation for that ... so people can go out and commit 5 year sentence crimes, so long as they then take enough probation afterwards?
