Sorry, rule, I thought discrimination (not reverse discrimination because there IS NO SUCH THING) It's ALL discrimination no matter who it is against was wrong 30-40 years ago.

Isn't that what Dr. King's "I have a dream" speech was all about? He dreamt that some day "a man would be judged by the content of his heart and not the color of his skin."

Discrimination affects those who do not have power in society.

So I find it odd that those who do are suddenly playing the victim.

Where do you get that it's sudden? It's been happening for decades. When I was looking for a job just out of college in the 80's, I had a supervisor with the Dept of Natural Resources look me in the eye during a job interview and say QUOTE You are qualified and I would like to hire you right now but I can't because you don't belong to a minority UNQUOTE

That job was never filled and I was unemployed.

It isnt playing victim.

Discrimination is WRONG no matter WHO is being discriminated against.

I remember meeting a few Blacks in upstate NY who were to get out of the "Deep South".Clearly they werent in a rush to go back, even after the Civil Rights act passed. They had kids and there kids grew up there. Many of them chose to stay North.I can't say I blame them.

Your original reference was to a somewhat recent time,

and in answer to my query for explanation your response seems to be referring something much further in the past;

quote:

ORIGINAL: Charles6682

Why in the hell would a rational Black person want to live in an area like how the South was with such horrible conditions?Granted, the North wasnt perfect but was a hell of a lot better than the South.

As I suspected, no personal r/l experience to justify the original statement. I was only funnin' myself to think that you might give us a quote from the "few Blacks in upstate NY" that you claim to have made acquaintance with as to why they left and weren't going back.

quote:

Still,Freddick Douglass wanted the North to win

Freddick Douglass was actually a Republican

Freddick Douglass lived in my hometown of Rochester

I wish you'd stop that. It's hard to eat my rice when laughing so hard.

quote:

ORIGINAL: Charles6682

Read this."The Life of Frederick Douglass,an American Slave".Written by Frederick Douglass in his own words.

That's better, thank you.

As long as we're in recommended reading mode, here are some items for you:

And a couple of books to explain what gave rise to the return migration:

I will rephrase that.It does not matter now anymore anyways. We are all Americans and that is what is important.

Right.

It doesn't matter anymore, you say.

Which is why you post on the subject incessantly, dredged up another months-old thread on the same subject, posted the "fuckthesouth" rant in that thread, and continually display your crippling bewilderment in trying to cope in a region far removed from the white bread "hive mind" world where you grew up.

You need a therapist, no question.

Actually, I was speaking generally and wasn't referring to you playing the victim, but then you proved that was true.

Those quotas were put in place because there was widespread discrimination against minorities.

We are only a few decades removed from "whites only" signs on restrooms and drinking fountains, so it tends to irritate me when I listen to those who have never experienced that claim they are being discriminated against by attempts to level the playing field.

Charles6682 -> RE: The South shall rise again??? (1/15/2011 3:39:10 PM)

Lets see. There was Jim Crow right here in the city I live in now.I am sure alot of the older Blacks can remember those times. Many of my neighbors are Black.I dont think I have lived in a "whitebread" world as you call it.Whatever that is suppose to mean.

So, you are saying that it is OK to discriminate on people based on their race.
That would make you racist wouldn't it?

I agree that we are only a few decades removed fom overt discrimination. It was as morally wrong then as it is now. The key Phrase is DECADES REMOVED.

No, what I'm saying is your definition of discrimination is a bit skewed.

You want to argue that the minority is oppressing the majority.

What I'm saying is this. A person that either treats people differently based on race or who ADVOCATES doing it is RACIST.

That is morally and ethically wrong. You talk about segregation. I'm 50 years old. Guess what? I have never seen a whites only lunch counter or water fountain or restroom or a segregated school. Know why? By the time I was born, they were gone from where I lived if they even existed.

You say that I am arguing that the minority is opressing the majority. Absolutely. The politically connected and wealthy are a minority. Do they not oppress the rest of us?
For centuries, "The Church" was a minority. Did they not oppress the rest of humanity?
S African apartheid was oppression of a majority by the minority.
Royal Families oppressed 'commoners' for centuries.
From the feudal era up untill the late 19th century, European 'Nobles' opressed the majority of the population.

I'm all for a level playing field but it should be level for everyone without regard to race, creed, gender, color or national origin.

THAT is what Dr King dreamt about.

The Confederacy has a considerable number of apologists and defenders, people who are strenuously trying to portray it as something honorable if perhaps misunderstood, to whitewash and downplay the horrors that it inflicted. What I mean by "support the Confederacy holds" is exactly this fondness, this deep desire to make it the moral equal of the Union.

i think what most people are really trying to apologise for and defend is South, not the Confederacy per se. You're right- the main purpose of the Confederacy was to win the war, and the main purpose of the war was to preserve slavery. i honestly don't think that THAT'S what most Southerns take pride in. They take pride in their culture, which is inextricably bound to the evils of slavery, and yet encompasses much more than just that. The terms "South" and "Confederacy" have become confused. And yet people say, The South will rise again, not the Confederacy will. What do you think that means?

Incidently, the horrors of slavery were inflicted by both North and South, as were the horrors of war, the horrors of racism and prejudice, the horrors of imperialism, etc. Both sides commited all sorts of horrors. Neither the North nor the Union has much claim to moral superiority, and i don't think we should start romantizing their role in history, either.

You remark that slavery was evil, but the Confederacy was not, is a perfect example of this whitewashing.

It would've been clearer to say that slavery was evil, but the South was not.

The Confederacy WAS slavery- slavery was its purpose for existence, slavery was the chief reason for secession. The Confederacy had as its driving concept the proposition that all men were NOT created equal.

So did the Nazi party. However, while i reject the holocaust, the Nazi dogma, and their flag, i am still capable of sympathising with the majority of German soldiers in WWII who were never anywhere near the concentration camps, and were merely performing what they believed to be their duty, at the detriment to their health, their comfort, and even their lives. And yet they were Nazis. How do you separate the State itself from the people who served it? Is the latter evil because the former is? Does the term "Confederacy" refer to the fight to retain slavery, or does it refer to the people who fought under that banner? Is it synonymous with slavery? Or does it mean something else?

That is why I say it was a rejection of everything that America stands for, and is itself a monstrous evil.

But what do you think America stands for? The proposition that all men are created equal? The government of the United States has violated that principle repeatedly, before and since the Civil War.

What do you see when you look at the stars and stripes?

Do you see hot dogs, barbecue, and apple pie?
Do you see George Washington crossing the Potomac?
Do You see the Constitution being argued back and forth in the sweltering heat of Philadelphia?
Do you see the Cherokees on their Trail of Tears?
Do you see Manifest destiny?
Do you see Japanese Americans forced into internment camps in WWII?
Do you see the defeat of Geronimo?
Do you see Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech?
Do you see Martin Luther King Jr.'s assasination?
Do you see the first man on the moon?
Do you see the first use of the atomic bomb?
Do you see the racism that existed in both North and South at the time of the Civil War, and still exists today?
Do you see the war against Iraq?
Do you see that U.S. policy keeps many third world countries "economically enslaved" for our own profit?
Do you see McCarthyism?

i could go on and on. My point is this- it is never a simple battle between good and evil.

Charles6682 -> RE: The South shall rise again??? (1/15/2011 7:26:48 PM)

Perhaps the point of all this is the Civil War itself and what it truly meant. It has now been almost 150 years since the Civil War started. The Confederate States were starting to secede from the Federal Government at around this time.It was April,1961 when the first shots were fired that caused the Civil War.This war played a defining moment in Americas history.

Both sides had legalized slavery at one point or another. It was wrong on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line.It was the institutions of the Confedarcy and the Union. It really didnt have anything to do with the people themselves,on both sides.

We talk about other Nations that have had their own Civil War.Lest not forget America had our own Civil War.The important thing is to learn from it and to prevent such a horrible thing from ever having to happen again. The real point is that we are all Americans now. There is no more Mason-Dixon line that divides us,we are the UNITED STATES of America. Some form of racism may always exist in some form or another. However, the facts are times have changed.I have seen racism in upstate NY as I have seen in Florida too.Intolerant people are everywhere. However, now doubt that intolerance is become a shameful act these days.As a Nation as a whole,America is alot better than it once was. Some people ask,"why bring up slavery, that was 150 years ago?"Thats simple, because this country can not forget the sins of our past.We may be forgiven as a Nation but we can not forget as a Nation.Times do change.

th eproblem is and forever will be that history is ALWAYS written by the winner and lets not forget all those book burnings.  That was for a damn good reason starting with covering up the truth so the winner can promulgate their agenda as truth.

No place on the planet is this more apparent than when you study law and governments.  It would be the last time anyone would ever believe anything they were taught except physics and then even that if put under the nicorscope one readily can see the very best physics has been brushed aside or completely covered up so a few with huge commercial investments can force society to run the course on their product and the original inventors are not able to capitalize and compete.

Some sneek through but the really big ones do not.  Take teslas work for instance, th emajority brushed under the table!

At least the supreme court ruled after his death the he in fact is th efather of radio NOT marconi.

Termyn8or -> RE: The South shall rise again??? (1/17/2011 6:33:32 AM)

Well don't that beat all. The Father of radio was not Italian but Russian ? That by decree of whom ? Some tyrants in black robes who coudn't change a 6BQ5 in their record player ? I guess the right people are making the decisions huh. That is if we want the wrong decisions.

In a way I guess I was lucky not to have my textbooks chosen for me.

RealOne is correct. Tesla invented radio.

Termyn8or -> RE: The South shall rise again??? (1/17/2011 6:50:04 AM)

OK, but that doesn't mean Marconi didn't. That comes down to who did it first.

Just like Farnsworth and Baird both invented all electronic television. Take it all the way back, did Og the cavemen invent the spear, or was it Gurmmph across the way, on the other side of the dinosaur bones ?

But I would like to point out that this is the most blatant hijack I have ever seen. Y'all get the award.

That is unless someone comes along and wants to point out that cavemen would not be amidst dinosaur bones. That would be the silver medal.

But, Termy, there is a museum in Kentucky that "proves" that cavemen DID live with the dinosaurs.
