Sirsholly.......

That is one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever read regarding organ donations.  Thank you for sharing.

With my recent situation it has me wondering, how many people are actually organ donors. If you aren't why aren't you? Is it due to religious reasons, medical reasons, or is it that you simply have not thought about it?

Here in my area you can make arrangements with the University of Iowa to donate your entire body, which I have done. They take/do whatever they want with what I've left them, then cremate the remains and return it to the survivors along with $50.00.

My mother did that, Case Western Reserve in Cleveland. They didn't send us $50, though.....

I'm checked on the driver's license and the family knows.

At what age is the decision legally yours to make in the US or the UK?

I am also a registered bone marrow donor, and have already been called upon once.

16 in the US, at least I remember them asking me about it when I got my license and it was one of the things we talked about as we admired each others shiny bits of plastic. But even if you are 80, your family can overrule your decision after death. Part of why I don't list it on my card - if my family wants to fight it, they can and easily. The card doesn't actually accomplish much, or at least it didn't the last time I looked into it.

Were you just tested, or did you get to donate??

petmonkey -> RE: Are you an organ donor? (1/12/2011 11:26:09 AM)

Daddysredhead -> RE: Are you an organ donor? (1/12/2011 11:44:25 AM)

I am an organ donor, have it marked on my driver's license, and my family knows. I'm also a regular blood donor. The Red Cross calls me often because there's always a shortage of my blood type because it is rare.

As to family overriding a person's decisions regarding organ donation, if the decedent has an Advanced Medical Directive that explicitly states that organ donation is to take place, the family cannot go against it.

DaddysInkedSlut -> RE: Are you an organ donor? (1/12/2011 12:59:05 PM)

Me personally I would like to know, to at least the names of those who donated their organs or family members organs to me or my family. To be able to thank them, to let them know what a gift they have given. Maybe I am weird.

Daddysredhead -> RE: Are you an organ donor? (1/12/2011 1:29:52 PM)

I think it would be nice, too, Inky. I guess it's all to do with anonymity for the donor & recipient.

DaddysInkedSlut -> RE: Are you an organ donor? (1/12/2011 2:02:13 PM)

I think either party can request it and either accept or deny to meet the other party.

MaxsGirl -> RE: Are you an organ donor? (1/12/2011 2:34:09 PM)

Nope, and neither is Alpha.  It's against our religious beliefs to give or receive organs or blood.  We could give to/receive from each other, but not strangers.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Are you an organ donor? (1/12/2011 3:31:57 PM)

I am, I figured that instead of feeding worms with what is left of me, I'd rather hope that my organs help somebody else...

Lucylastic -> RE: Are you an organ donor? (1/12/2011 4:16:00 PM)

yep, and have been for 30 years... I have strong feelings about being able to donate what I can.

LadyPact -> RE: Are you an organ donor? (1/12/2011 4:23:29 PM)

I am an organ donor.  It's been an option to select on a driver's license in CO state (unlike most folks, I'm not required to change it when I move) for as long as I can remember.  I am not currently a blood donor.  It has everything to do with where I live and scheduling.  I am not the person that you want behind the wheel of a car if I've given blood.   When the bloodmobile came to My place of employment, it was fine.

Has anybody else noticed that the replies here are way above average?

LadyConstanze -> RE: Are you an organ donor? (1/12/2011 4:53:31 PM)

Quite surprised how many people are organ donors, it makes sense though, I mean if you're dead you get burned or you rot away slowly, or the worms have a nice snack, but since you're dead anyway it doesn't matter, it seems quite wasteful if you think that another person could use the organs and gets a 2nd chance and somebody's just destroying those spare parts.

DaddysInkedSlut -> RE: Are you an organ donor? (1/12/2011 5:03:55 PM)

I dont know if we are "above the average" I think we are a smaller group being polled than the norm.

I donated.

I'm curious if all you donors also donate blood regularly.

I give blood about every 6 month, at the local blood drive.

Really? That is fucked up.
Here the decision of the deceased is final and legally binding.

I think the high percentage of donors on this thread might have to do with those who do not want to donate keeping silent out of fear of judgment, or because they feel they would have to explain themselves and do not want to.

LadyPact -> RE: Are you an organ donor? (1/12/2011 11:39:10 PM)

Here's the most recent survey that I found.  How Do Americans View Organ Donation?

43 percent of people are undecided, reluctant or do not wish to have their organs and tissue donated after their deaths, according to a new survey conducted by Donate Life America.

Reverse math says, at best, only 57% of those surveyed are planning to donate.  That's 18% less than the results of the poll right now.  Yes, we've got a smaller sample here, as well as pulling from more than just the USA.  The difference could be a fluke due to various reasons.  Just one of those things that I get curious about.

GreedyTop -> RE: Are you an organ donor? (1/12/2011 11:49:45 PM)

for complicated reasons, I am not an organ/blood donor.. but I will donate my body to research (whether in a teaching hospital or the body farm is irrelevant).

Hillwilliam -> RE: Are you an organ donor? (1/13/2011 5:18:25 AM)

I'm both an organ donor and I have a Living Will. Everyone close to me knows that if they override either one I will do My best to haunt their ass to the point that Amityville Horror will look like Casper.
