I believe I'm not registered anymore. I used to be listed as an organ donor, just as I used to donate blood every two or three months...but now my blood isn't acceptable because I've had lymphoma and chemos. Being in remission doesn't change this. I miss it...I was a fast bleeder and it was fun watching some of the guys (fellow donors) fainting. I was the smartass watching for blanching faces, then calling out, "Timmmberrr!"
When my father died from pancreatic cancer, they wouldn't accept anything for organ donation except for his eyes. Two people can see now because of this...two people who were allowed to look us up after a year and maybe say hello. Both chose not to. My sister and I waited like kids before Christmas, wondering who got his eyes. Male or female, adults or children. We don't know.
It would have been nice to know.
When my cancer had come back for the third time, my sister in Texas tested and was registered as a bone marrow donor. It's been years now and she has never been called to donate.
If my (disabled) only son ever died, would I want part of him to live on in others? Yes.
