Hey!  We had 6 inches, then sleet, and haven't gotten above freezing since.

But yes, we are wimps when it comes to ice on roads.  Otherwise, we are perfect though!

Snow


Two different things, entirely different driving conditions.

Ohio -  flat.

South east -  hilly.

Ice + hill = no go.

You're talking about folks in Georgia (and other locations) who have never driven in the stuff.  They honestly don't know how.  Even stuff like don't hit the breaks when you're sliding is stuff they really don't know.  I don't want a bus driver who has no experience driving in snow to be on the road with a bus load of kids.

I lived in another city than the OP who created this thread.  I can promise you that the folks in that location can't drive worth a darn to begin with.  Trust Me.  It was better to keep them home.

Spoken like a person who has never had to juggle child care of a school aged child and a work schedule. 

The additional issue is sending them to school for more days in the summer when the temperatures are hitting over a hundred degrees with humidity that is through the roof.  It costs the school districts more to keep the classrooms cooled in some areas during summer sessions than it does to keep them warm in January.  It's also costing more because you're doing payroll into additional summer days.

The idea is to make the time up in a way that is going to cause the least amount of inconvenience for everyone at the least amount of cost.  If they can go on President's Day, they can go on MLK day.

With regular tires you can get up a steep hill of solid slick ice?

Ice, not snow.

I have a 4WD truck, and I think I know how to drive on snow.  I stay home, mostly because of all the other idiots who will not slow down for anything.

My truck is no good on roads that are 3 inches of pure ice.  Once that snow turned to sleet and freezing rain, we were fucked.  Add the fact that in the curvy hilly roads of the mountains, they got more ice than we did here in the metro Atlanta area, and it is better to stay home.

My district did not choose to go Monday.  So far, we have 5 days to make up.  I am sure that the week off we have at the end of February will be used, but many districts have 9 days or more to make up and did not have that week scheduled for a break.

I am afraid of what else the weather will bring.  We had our first white Christmas since 1811 or so, which was all snow so not too bad really, but add the storm at the beginning of this week, and we are barely into winter, well, ugh.

........as the climate changes at this sort of pace, you may as well get used to this sort of odd weather and invest in snow tyres.....you'll be needing them again soon enough.

If you think Georgia is flat as fuck except in the north, you don't have much of a clue. But I give, you win, we are all ignorant as hell and don't know the difference between flat and hilly, snow and ice.

Sheesh, I was so trying to be nice and joke with a yankee about our lack of driving skills.........

ETA the Appalachians start down here, not in Ohio btw.  I think that would make us the foothills. In fact, I am sure of it cause I googled!

You hit the nail right on the head: they're idiots. Honestly, 4WD is not as good as people think it is. We have idiots spin out their big SUVs here all the time because they dont understand the difference between 4WD and traction control. There wouldent be as much of a problem if your city would invest in a snow plow or two and some road salt.

More clueless than I thought.

The delta and Atlantic coastal areas are flat, all the rest is hilly, especially Atlanta.

The areas spoken of in the discussion are all hilly.

I spent a winter in Macon a couple years ago, and yes, its flat by my standards. Also, "foothills" refers to an area around a mountain range that doesnt have a high enough elevation to be considered a mountain. The Appalachians run through Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, which border Ohio to the east, southeast, and south, respectively.

So yes, I win. However, I did not, and shall not, call you all ignorant and/or dumb. I do know a few smart southerners

Hmmm.. when was the last time you were south?

Schools close to various reasons. No heat in one school, and the south stypically closes all the schools in the district to keep everyone even. Too cold and the pipes freeze.. no school. Bridges icing over... for many areas in the south, rural bus routes dont allow for safe travel of school kids. The state patrol has been known to turn school buses around and call the school district to cancel classes. Salt for roads is not a high priority in the south, for obvious reasons. Typically waiting a few days and its all gone is good enough.

You forgot Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. I jokingly refer to Lake Lure area my parents moved too as "living on the side of a mountain by their fingertips" because the valleys are so steep there.

As for taking spring break away, I am sure that is a possibility, but many folks have vacations planned for that week, that they have planned years in advance.  Taking a Monday will be less disruptive. 

I am waiting to see if anyone who chooses to not come to school on Monday will have it as an excused absence.  To me, that would be the right thing to do.
