Why does health care in Cuba cost 96% less than in the US?:
Life expectancy of about 78 years of age in Cuba is equivalent to the US. Yet, in 2005, Cuba was spending US$193 per person on health care, only 4% of the $4540 being spent in the US. Where could the other 96% of US health care dollars be going?

Command economies do have some advantages. Like being able to turn down pornstars, lawyers, the idle rich etc...to 0...and turn up Drs, nurses, teachers, to 500%.

Cuba has the best Doctor ratio in the world, Russia is 2nd. You'd be better off considering somewhere like Germany (not my ideal choice by far, but a more realistic target to transform the american system to).

There are also obvious lifestyle choice reasons as to the cost difference. Prevention is better than cure (or so I hear) and if you prevent bad health before it occurs then you don't have to pay for the results of it. It's the nanny state so some proclaim. Out of interest: why does someone with an insurance lead system care as to what the costs are?

When I lived in miami, I had Cuban/American friends that sent vitamin B supplements to their relatives back home. Why you ask? Their diet was so poor that there was an epidemic of blindness due to malnutrition.

Nice health care Michael Moore.

I distinctly remember not asking.

When Cuba wants to make friends with, or trade with another country, it sends them doctors instead of money. So the Cubans have an doctors for oil thing happening with Venezuela. The Venezuelans get a free medical service for their people, the Cubans get free oil for their economy. Everyone's ahead and not a bullet or a Marine in sight!

.....that can't be right.

Everyone knows that communists=wrong, capitalists=right.

Check your facts. According to US conventional wisdom Cuba must be sending bombs with doctor written on them with crayons. They're a communist country, that means that anything they do....by definition........is wrong. [/sarcasm]

As many other threads have discussed, life expectancy is a deceptive measure of the quality of health care. However, if you insist on using it, if you factor in Cubas very high rate of perinatal deaths and stillbirths compared to the US, Cubas life expectancy per reported pregnancy (instead of per birth) drops to 1.5 years lower than the US. I also suspect the recording of pregnancies that result in deaths and stillbirths in Cuba is questionable.

It is not a secret why medical help in Cuba costs a little. The prices and staff salaries are  controlled by the state and there are very little possibilities for fraud. We should rather compare the US with other developed capitalist nations. This comparison reveals US spends about twice the average per person. Interestingly, the state spending is about equal to the other developed nations total cost, and the private system adds the rest on top of it. It is hard to find honest quantitative analysis about the situation. Politicians do not know, are too lazy to do any research (they are well covered themselves), and give usually incomplete answers. For example; drug development medical research cost high, US has the most Hi Tech medicine that costs a lot (the best on Earth) and so on. Obviously, the cost is the sum of many factors. I would like to know  how much different factors (fraud, excessive compensation, bureaucratic inefficiencies, lawsuits, "defensive medicine", over-medication and so on) contribute to the cost.

This^

plus greedy pharmaceutical Companies that do scandalous shit like re branding a compound for another "medical Purpose" just to keep the patents so that no one else can make a generic copy(that's how Prozac became a menopause pill), and fake medical prognosis to take advantage of an otherwise useless compound(really, restless leg syndrome?). Good ol kick backs for doctors who prescribe certain meds doesn't hurt either.

And hey, if you don't wanna let a doctor make up their own mind whether a medication is right for the patients "condition" or not, just advertise the shit out of it till the morons ask their doctors to prescribe it to them by name....

paid incompetence is also rampant in what I've seen from my own experiences
Broke some bones back when I was young, went to the local hospital of course
they took x-rays, doctor even rubbed his chin when contemplating them(you could see where my hand was bent in half, my mom actually had to tell me"stop poping it" cause I was tying to set it straight in the car) and then told us there was nothing he could do....nothing, no orthopedic surgeon at the hospital, no number for a local one, nothing...charged 700 bucks...to do nothing cept look at an xray and say "Yup...it's broken"...that was after insurance had paid for some of it...it took 600 plus insurance to pay for the surgery that fixed it...........THIS HOSPITAL HAS WON AWARDS FOR HAVING THE "#1 ER IN THE NATION"...I'm guessing cause it sends all the really challenging cases every where else

really, I've seen people air lifted from car wrecks no less then 200 feet away from this hospital..and it's #1 for ER service....

Yes. The points you raise are valid and pertinent. Another as-yet-unmentioned factor is coverage. Despite spending roughly twice as much per head than comparable countries, the US system fails to deliver the universal coverage that comparable countries achieve. Even after Obama's reforms, tens of millions of US citizens remain without health care coverage. And bankruptcy often accompanies illness, a situation unthinkable in comparable countries.

Which means that the US pays more and get an awful lot less than comparable countries for its health dollar ......

You are so right!

I was kidnapped by a gang of foul smelling cigar smoking bearded Cubans who threatened me with torture and defilement until I agreed to spread malicious rumours about the USA.

They were unimaginably evil and perverted. They even sneered derisively when I requested defilement without the torture. It took all my condoms and strength to keep the Stockholm Syndrome in check.

So please don't believe a single word I say. It is all invention and propaganda, I confess it freely.
