My ex-husband is a vanilla guy. The only ice cream flavor he will ever eat is vanilla. I really can't understand what posesses him to eat the same plain flavor of ice cream day after day, year after year. I would go crazy wanting some Ben and Jerry's after too much of that. I could chalk it up to my much more sophisticated palate, or my sense of adventure about food - I love complex flavors, and the combinations of some B&J's really hit the spot. I laughed at the ex once about his boring choice, and he told me that obviously I just wasn't eating very good vanilla ice cream, and that if I choose the right kind I'd taste all kinds of delicious subtleties in the flavor. So I tried the kind he recommended, and it still just tasted like vanilla to me. But just because I don't enjoy vanilla as much as the ex does, that doesn't mean it's not flavorful and satisfying for him. I'm not going to feel sorry for him for not liking the same ice cream I do, that would be as pointless as him feeling sorry for me because I can't detect the subtle flavors in his favorite cup of vanilla. If he's enjoying his ice cream as much as I'm enjoying mine, what does it matter if his is made of vanilla beans and mine of peanut butter cups or cookie dough? We're both getting the same ice cream headache.
