I see ALOT of people sick... bugs of some kind.   So far I have escaped that... how are you coping with this cold season?

Is there alot of "under the weather" in your area?

Do's and don'ts  you recommend.  ?

Thanks all!

There is a lot of cold and flu crap going around here. I just try to do all the right things. Eat healthy, drink plenty of water, get lots of exercise and sleep, use my Neti pot regularly......it seems to have paid off!

Termyn8or -> RE: How are you staying cold free? bug free? (1/19/2011 2:37:59 PM)

My immune system is building back up, and I hope it remebers everything from days past.

I don't wash cuts, I don't do anything they say. I don't keep things clean. I will pick a fork up off the floor and eat with it. I will do alot of thing people think are crazy. I have rarely been sick, but when I get sick it is very very bad. It just doesn't happen often.

I only do hygene to be acceptable to others. Left to my own I would not bathe, brush my teeth or anything. If I bleed, so what. I don't even have bandaids in the house, and I don't care.

I have an immune system and my recent bout with doctors is only to get my eyesight fixed, and to invoke the pity of the court if I ever need it. I could live in a puddle of mud. And I have VERY rarelt been sick. People who are sick want to roll others a separate joint so we don't catch what they got. I'll hit it.

I simply don't give a shit and my body and immune system has gotten the message. I almost died a couple of times, but the body now knows there is no help coming and it has to do what it has to do. Or die.

So far so good. The only thing I hope is that I am not a carrier of something, I don't want to infect others, no matter the state their immune system is in.

I wish I could tell you what it is that seems to be keeping Me from getting various colds and such.  Honestly, Pa, I really don't know.  The only thing that I've changed is (mostly) keeping the junk food out of My diet, which I highly doubt is making the difference when it comes to colds.

I get sick only once every two years on average.  [;)]

Nope, I don't get flu shots either.  [:D]

I avoid crowds, and keep masks in my car if I am going to be around people who are ill.  Someone really teed me off a few weeks ago by coughing in my face at Walmart...I felt the rush of air on my face and held my breath for a while afterward.  If someone is coughing in an elevator, I don't get in unless I am wearing a germ mask.  I rarely wear a germ mask, but I'm not afraid to be seen in public wearing one.

I started doing this during years that I had to have chemo.  I was already weak and didn't want bronchitis or the flu on top of everything.

Other than that, during normal times when I don't see anyone hacking up nasty stuff around me...I use hand sanitizer and have trained myself not to touch my face with my hands.  If my face tickles, I rub it with my forearm.  After leaving a store, I have hand sanitizer in my car, and use it...even if I am going to another store next.

People used to wash their hands before eating.  Most people don't nowadays.  I might wash my hands in a public bathroom even if I have not "used the restroom" if there is dust or dirt on my hands, but right after sitting down at a table, after ordering, I use hand sanitizer.  Face it, after having washed hands in a bathroom, one touches the faucets to turn the water off, turns a crank to get paper towels, touches a door handle to open it, and then touches the menu to read.  I used to clean bathrooms...we never cleaned the sink handles unless they were visibly soiled.  Same for the door handles.  Menus were never disinfected.  Tables were wiped off with wet rags, not with bleach water and...usually not with any soap either.  Trays at McDs and other places were wiped with a damp towel...imagine thousands of people using them and only a damp towel going over them IF they looked soiled, lol.

(We watched a woman use a rag to clean inside bathroom stalls, then came out with the same rag...without even rinsing it in hot water...to wipe around the bathroom sinks...then...went out to wipe the tables in a McDonalds.)

I use that disinfectant towelette in supermarkets to clean the grocery cart handle when those area available.

One time I wasn't thinking, I was in my favorite Chinese food buffet and had disinfected my hands then gone to the tables to serve myself some food.  I had waited five minutes until someone else had served themselves and sat down...they had bronchitis and had covered their mouth when coughing and had touched many of the serving utensils.  I touched these serving spoons and did not think to disinfect my hands again...and caught that nasty bronchitis by the time I woke up the next day.  Now I use hand sanitizer after serving my food at buffets.

No, I am not OCD but I am stubborn.  If I am sick and have to go out in public or even around my mother, I wear a germ mask to keep my germs to myself, and yes, I use the hand sanitizer just as copiously.

If I've washed my hands at a place with automatic faucets, I use my elbow to open the door and skip using hand sanitizer.

My son and my mother now do the same.

I read that most cold germs are caught from our own hands and took action.  It works for us.

I hear you.

It is not a cold or flu- but a run down feeling.

I spent some time- near family- and the heat was too dry.  Entirely too dry.

littlewonder -> RE: How are you staying cold free? bug free? (1/19/2011 3:47:48 PM)

yeahhhh...no advice here. I got sick over MLK holiday weekend and still trying to recover. <sigh>

I work with the public. Short of me wiiping everything down in the office all day long, there's no way to escape anything.

pahunkboy -> RE: How are you staying cold free? bug free? (1/19/2011 3:52:58 PM)

We were out to eat- some guy hacking up a storm- I would have left- but I was with a group.

Also- people not dressed for winter- wearing shorts and no coats....  WTF!

servantforuse -> RE: How are you staying cold free? bug free? (1/19/2011 4:32:03 PM)

It's 15 degrees here im Milwaukee today, around 0 tomorrow and Friday. I wear shorts everyday except when using the snow blower. You don't catch cold wearing shorts...

Termyn8or -> RE: How are you staying cold free? bug free? (1/19/2011 4:46:16 PM)

FR

Cynthy, I am really sorry about your situation. I live way differently though.

If I didn't have a roomie I would never wash dishes. I wear the same pair of pants to work until they start falling off. For the first time in my life I got a flu shot and I will not again. Wanna know why ? I bet you don't.

Survival of the fittest. If I die I die. It will not be by my own hand, but I do not fear it. My ilk sees dying as a chance for the rest of the family to have a party. We do not mourn. We can play a nice show for the Earthlings but if you ever went to one of our funerals you would be shocked. Poking fun at the dead. Of course we don't mean anything by it, but really we are too aware of things to let death worry us. You should've seen my Uncles and Aunts fighting over Grampa's shit. But I got the ashtray. My Dad had to put a gun to my Uncle's head to get it.

We don't fucking care. My immune system before I got sick was so strong that I would not wash a cut or a stab wound, in fact even a bullet hole. I would just as soon roll around in manure, never had a problem.

I believe that the immune system learns, just like the brain and other parts of the body. It gets ready. Mine was exercised very well in life. Before I got sick, I hadn't been to any medical professional in at least 25 years. I was sick about three times over that period. More than once they tried to get me to go to the doctor but I always refused. They threatened to drag me, and I pulled out a gun. We are talking about my Mother here BTW. NO, it ain't happeniong. PERIOD, got it ?

Things have changed but not that much. I need my eye fixed. I'm blowing off everything except the one preop they require right before the surgery. Fuck cholesterol and their colonoscopy, everything. If I die I die. Is that so hard to accept ? Why do we need to hang on for dear life, for dear life ? I don't care what my cholesterol is. And I don't think it's a problem. My spread between systolic and diastolic is a steady 69 points at almost any level of blood pressure. I can stay up for like two days now (used to be four) which indicates my blood sugar is extremely stable.

I don't give a shit what they say, fix my eye, here's the money, "see" you later.

No more, I almost refused the flu shot, but having to go in to get my eye fixed made me rethink it. I don't want to be a carrier.

You're welcome to do your worst, assuming you can afford the air fare - I've got a fairly bulletproof immune system.

One thing I would suggest is people avoid antibiotics unless absolutely necessary. I used to get quite a few things, but since I stopped running off to the doc every time I had this or that (about ten years ago), and being pumped full of ABs as a result, I've become much healthier.

Oh, and flu shots are a bad idea unless you're in an "at risk" group.

slaveluci -> RE: How are you staying cold free? bug free? (1/19/2011 5:05:27 PM)

Luck, I suppose. I've been very fortunate as I work with the public and, so far, not even a severe sniffle. Hope it stays that way[:)]

I'm in this camp ^^^^^

Heat and warmth are ideal mediums for bacteria and virus's to live/survive. I open all my windows and air the condo out, for at least one hour a day, and sleep with my bedroom window open about 3 inches. I'm a huge fresh air freak, and like servant, often wear shorts or light clothing, even in pretty cold temps.

I also am a firm believer in acupuncture and have my Chi adjusted seasonally.

I have had the flu once in my life, don't take flu shots and am very rarely sick. I may get one common cold per year < sniffles, sneezing, runny nose, felling icky, but not sick >

Maybe people just have the Winter blahs.

Tantriqu -> RE: How are you staying cold free? bug free? (1/19/2011 6:47:11 PM)

Flu shots! Hurrah for flu shots! As all about me crumble and fall in a tower of tissues and phlegm. I never get colds anymore, either. Just like mama told you, take your shots, wash your hands and avoid sickos.
