DarkSteven -> Sarah Palin - the anti-Cheney? (1/20/2011 7:48:51 PM)

Palin's going to run in 2012.  She HAS to.  She is playing herself as a politician to become a celebrity.

That said, my stance has been (and continues to be) that there's no way on earth she'll be President.  Aside from whether she's electable, she doesn't WANT the job.  She likely outearns Obama right now, she never has to answer any pesky questions, and she loves the life she's got.  The last thing she wants is to have to grind through legislation and cut deals.

Previously, I had projected that she would enter the primaries, and then withdraw at some point, claiming that the grueling pace of campaigning was hurting her family.  And then cut some sort of deal with another GOP candidate to deliver her bloc of votes in return for getting some of her pet planks incorporated into his platform.

Well, another possibility hit me.  She could enter the primary, and then cut a deal with another candidate to become the VP candidate - on HER terms.  If elected, she'd be the exact opposite of Dick Cheney - she'd want the VP position for the cachet and visibility but without the grind of doing policy.  It goes without saying that she would also eschew the usual funeral attendance, etc., that a VP is expected to do.

I still think it more likely that she'll withdraw.  But she does have another option.

My first thought on reading your title was "Yeah, she's a better shot"!

If she were to get into the primaries or nominated, I will have lost all hope for this country. Please tell me there are enough thinking people left in this country that would not seriously consider her an option.

She's a quitter with no qualifications necessary to become even a VP. What a horrifying thought, her, one heartbeat away from the Oval Office.

I don't believe she has the stamina, attention span, or resilience to run a primary campaign.

Absent success in the primaries, whether she'll have sufficient political capital to negotiate with the GOP will depend on that of the Tea Party --  its popularity could wane in two years -- and on the perception of the performance of the Tea Party congressional freshman.

Why?  Anyone can enter the primary with enough money and support.  Simply running is NOT the same as being nominated.

Granted, she can draw a crowd. Granted she can whip up enthusiasm.

She could run, and toss her votes to a Tea-Party dark horse.

I sometimes get the thought that so many people on either side throw their hat in the ring just to garner more campaign funds to hand-off to the front runner.

I would lose hope because she's an empty suit. She is an unqualified quitter. I hope the majority of the electorate can see that, if not, I'll go become a hermit somewhere.

Umm. . . she has enough fricking guts to say "the haters are going to cost my state a helluva lot of money, so I will short-circuit them by leaving." is actually pretty commendable.

Clinton was not willing to do the same.

What exactly is it that you want?  Someone who caves or someone that believes in themselves?

When one runs for office, one automatically agrees to the term of service specified. She quit because she could make a hell of a lot more money as a talking head with no responsibilty.

I don't even understand the point she was trying to make with that statement.

Running is pretty easy, actually. You fill out a form and pay a nominal fee--$10, something like that. You have to be at least 35, a nonfelon, and a native born citizen, but other than that, you're running for President. A few thousand people do it every four years.

Getting on the ballot in each state and the District of Columbia is harder than that, of course, but doable--essentially, you need a lot of signatures.

So you are obviously furious with Obama for quitting as Senator?

I can amend my statement that much. I would lose hope if she actually got nominated. Theoretically (sp?) you're right, anyone can run. And quite frankly, her running would prove it.

Bad analogy. One quit to be president. The other quit to have a reality TV show.

I think running for President supercedes state office (and no, I'm not happy that it's common pratice to dump a current responibility for a higher office). Obama won and went to DC. Palin should have gone back to being governor for the remainder of her term.

Hillary completed the term she said she would and didn't run in 2004. She finished her responsibility to her elected office.

ETA: I've gotta go, but will look forwrd to reading this thread later.

Um aylee, who are you supporting? Palin caved and Blowjob Willie believed in himself.

Are you talking about Hilary Clinton?

If so...she was elected in 2000, re-elected in 2006, and left when she became Secretary of State.

Oops, I was talking about Hillary and the Presidential campaign of 2004. My bad for not being clear.

...I am sick of her.

Ron Paul is the guy to watch.

I could support him. His son Rand in VA night screw it up for him though.

About as furious as i am with Kennedy and Harding... who both did the same... and the answer is... im not furious at all with men who stepped up to the plate and took on more responsibility than they had previously.

Palin simply dropped everything and ran.

Musicmystery -> RE: Sarah Palin - the anti-Cheney? (1/20/2011 9:19:33 PM)

So what was McCain going to do--remain Senator if he became President?

tazzygirl -> RE: Sarah Palin - the anti-Cheney? (1/20/2011 9:21:26 PM)

Nope. Would not expect him too.

The difference is McCain and Obama were seeking to not only take care of those who elected them as Senators, but also take care of the same people once they became President.

Palin, again, simply said.. bye bye.
